Seth Hardy, a former resident of Riley, has found himself facing some very serious charges in California. Seth Hardy, a Seabee in the Navy, is currently in jail faceing 2 charges of attempted murder and 2 more charges having to do with explosives. According to Ventura County detectives, Hardy placed explosive devices on John Marmo's vehicle in attempts to kill him. A girl offered Hardy money to do the job, but the bombs didn't work. However Marmo was eventually murdered outside his home by another Seabee who was best friends with Hardy. It's quite a twisted chain of events leading up to Marmo's death. I just don't understand why Hardy, and all the rest involved, would risk their lives and future for such a stupid reasons.

Hey, I know this guy. His cowboy hat and trench coat style couldn't go unnoticed here in OC. Seth and Toerner were always together acting like they were going to conquer the world. Maybe they will conquer the "prison world" now! I don't know what their future holds for them now, but I know John Marmo's family will never be the same again. My prayers go out to the Marmo family. God Bless the Marmo family.

I know them also and have never seen Seth in a trench coat. They are both nice guys who got caught up in something bad. They were not going to conquer the world. They were idealist and wanted to make the world a better place. They would help anyone with any problem and I feel that got them in this trouble. I know Seth is very devoted to his family. He would never hurt anyone or anything on purpose.

Planting explosive devices on a man's car isn't intentional?!?! That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. And it also states in his arrest warrant that he admitted doing these acts to a citizen informant. Yeah, he's a real great guy. Puh!

DENIAL!! Look on Seth Hardy's pictures on myspace and there is even a picture of him smoking, wearing his cowboy hat and trench coat. Seth also INTENTIONALLY tried framing John Marmo through NCIS last year in order to prevent him from gaining custody of his daughter. And Toerner shoots Marmo in the back while he is leaving for work at 5:58am after lying in wait for 30 minutes outside of Marmo's house. Real nice guys who would help anyone with any problem; I THINK NOT!!! I

Exactly my point, FYI. Thank you very much. These are not the fine young men "mom" is making them out to be. They are lying through their teeth, and for what? To defend their roles in a young father's murder?!?! Seth Hardy may not be accused of murder, but it's not for lack of trying.

I had never been on my space but after your post I did look at it. Talk about facts straight. Hardy had a cowboy had on but there is no picture of him in a trench coat.

Yeah, you're one to talk about getting your facts straight. In one of the pictures, he's wearing a black trench coat. You might want to look a little harder before bickering about mundane details.

I still don't see it. How did you get to myspace. I had never used it before and I googled myspace . Then I went to people and typed in his name. He was the third or forth one down and I clicked on view profile. If you have another way please let me know. I am not bickering about mundane detail. I was just stating what I saw.

When you go on his full profile, right under his picture, click on "view my pics." It's the second one over, and the caption says, "Yes I smoke." He's wearing a black trench coat.

I don't think premeditated murder, of an unarmed man, is an acceptable means of making the world a better place. It is one thing to help someone with a problem, but it's another thing to kill a person in the process. You think you know these guys, but you just know the image they wanted you to see. I bet you will be surprised by Seth Hardy's myspace profile. The content in his myspace isn't that of someone sweet and innocent that's for sure. Seth Hardy tried to kill John Marmo twice and Matthew Toerner shot and killed John Marmo who is a father of a 4 year old girl. Maybe they were nice and polite around you, but no matter how you look at it; they are a danger to society and need to be punished.

I would still like to know what "problem" Hardy and Toerner were trying to help Rebecca Braswell and Shannon Butler with. They are claiming that John Marmo was assaulting Butler, but for what reason would he? The DA says Marmo was murdered over the custody dispute with his ex, Braswell. This makes more sense as court documents show that Mr. Marmo was just awarded joint physical custody a month before he was murdered and was due back in court in January since his ex still wasn't abiding by the court order. Please explain how a man who loves his daughter so much that he repeatedly went to court for custody/visitation for over 2 years is a problem?

FYI...you took the "problem" to mean John Marmo which is way wrong. "Mom" said these guys would help anyone and I am just saying helping a friend should never mean committing a crime for them. Sorry you took my comment the wrong way....Geez. I thought the tone of my comment would portray how wrong these guys were and how Hardy and Toerner fooled "mom" into thinking they are nice guys. Just like before...My heart goes out to the Marmo family

My comment was more directed towards "mom" not to you. I replied to the wrong person. Everyone who defends the accused say what nice guys they are and they were just trying to help a friend with a problem. I still don't understand what the problem was with Mr. Marmo wanting to see his daughter. This is such a tragic situation and my heart goes out to the Marmo family as well.

I wish people would stop defending these guys. The people who are defending them are far and few, but it amazes me how people can justify the actions of others even when it involves murder. It shouldn't matter that Hardy and Toerner were nice guys; they still did something unforgivable. Toerner might have been a "nice guy," but the momment he pulled the trigger he became a murder. Prayers go out to the Marmo family.

Here I am commenting in the Riley, Ks Forum regarding a former resident of Riley, but I am hoping someone from Riley would know Seth Hardy and could tell us what he was like as a friend or neighbor. I actually live in Laguna Beach, CA so I am curious to know what kind of a person Hardy was while he lived in Riley. Is Hardy's actions in this crime shocking to the residents of Riley, or is Hardy's involvement not surprising to the Riley community? I would really like to know what Seth Hardy's friends and family think about the attempted murder charges he confessed to. Thanks

I find it disturbing that so many people conspired for so long to kill someone. I am following this case because I knew John and feel so sorry for his little girl and family. How could a mother kill the father of her daugher? Why would Toerner kill John if he really never even knew him? Toerner said he didn't accept money, but who really knows if he did or not. I read somewhere that about $300 was offered to people to kill John; I don't consider that to be a large amount of money so it would be easy to accept it and then spend it unnoticed. Even though Toerner said he didn't get paid for killing John, he could just be saying that to "cover his ass." Toerner probably knows "murder for hire" would look very bad against him in court. I can't believe Seth Hardy's disposition was continued again. Prayers go out to the Marmo family
