Area marijuana smuggler sentenced to more than 18 years

Feb 21, 2008

CHARLESTON -- A former Hilton Head Islander who lived the good life for years was sentenced for running a marijuana smuggling operation in which he sank tons of pot to the ocean floor and later brought it to the surface using smaller boats, global-positioning units and scuba gear.

It was the biggest marijuana importation scheme in coastal South Carolina since the late 1970s, when "Operation Jackpot" caught people smuggling drugs to barrier islands throughout the state, according to Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner.

Garry C. Chupurdy, 58, of Thunderbolt, Ga., and Hilton Head, SC pleaded guilty to four federal charges related to drug smuggling and money laundering and was sentenced Tuesday to more than 18 years in prison.

What could be a more blatant example of the abuse of power and the waste of tax dollars than the government's continuing war on a simple plant that has incredible medical benefits and in no way represents a threat to people anywhere on this planet? Anyone against socialism should be against this unconstitutional intrusion of the government into individual Americans' private lives.

A local businessman here in western nc just got 5-7 years for killing an employee - 2nd degree murder.
This is a victimless offense and he gets more than a murderer? Go figure, this is justice?

Those were the good ole days!!!! You faced a max. Fed. penalty of 5 yrs. for any amount of pot when I started. However, Barry, Slick, Riley,Harvey and others were prosecuted under CCE Fed. Statutes. Continuing Criminal Enterprise (848)which had a 10 yr. minimum sentence. Anybody heard from Cooper Walls or Woody Welch?

I'm sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I was married to Bob Forbes during the "operation jackpot" days. The Rhoad family welcomed me into their lovely home in Branchville while I was dealing with moving back to SC after living in CA.

Pretty weird priorities. A man is sentenced to 18 years for importing a harmless plant and predatory sociopaths like preston oates are walking around free!

There is a new book called Jackpot by Jason Ryan. It is mostly Barry and Les' version of accounts.
