"Beam, 46, worked in the property division and has been a Suffolk police officer since 1987."

So, were the illegal proceeds worth losing your 20 years?

I agree with "wordygurdy, Albany, NY". It was extremely idiotic of that Suffolk County police officer to ruin his career for lousy cigarettes. And ruin it he did. No one can be a police officer ever again after they have been arrested. What? Did Mr. Beam feel the Suffolk County Police Department didn't pay him enough at $106,000 a year? Come on now! That's way more money than most people make in a year. What was his problem? Oh right, GREED that's what Mr. Beam's problem is. If I was Mr. Beam and his cronies', I would be totally embarrassed to be sent to prison just for selling cigarettes that were illegal because they weren't "taxed".

Here we go again - best cop job in the NATION and it isn't enough - they need to steal. Goes to show you that no matter what people have they always think they deserve or should have MORE. what fools they are. Maybe this will make room for one of the 20,000 applicants who would like his job.

I agree that the cop and the civilian employee were stupid, but just some clarification info for wordygurdy and others, the cop has already retired with a nice pension. The NYS pension system can't punish, or withhold pension benefits from any civil servant who becomes eligible for retirement. As for the civilian, he too will be collecting a small pension in the distant future for his 14 years of service.

That may be true. Guess I missed the part about that he was already retired. So what about health benefits? There have to be some ramifications to being a worthless thief-cop, besides the "shame shame" slap on the wrist.

Sorry to have to advise you of more bad news. He wasn't retired at the time of the crime, he retired one month later. Also, as a retiree he is entitled to lifetime health coverage from the County. Sorry

Why is this a new post? This occured months ago and is old hat.

The cigarettes were years old and ordered destroyed by the court. Instead of bringing them to the dump, he kept them. He stole garbage. We agree it was a dumb move, but it doesn't shake my faith in a 2,600 man dep't.

"I guess internal affairs is too busy doing nothing to investigate"

Or how about calling that Corrupt Suffolk DA Tom Spota....yeah you know former PBA attorney, yeah the moron that screwed up the Tankleff case.Guess
thats why Mike"the thief" Beam got off so easy.Funny thing about these punk DA's they always talk big and throw the book at the little
guy but they give equal justice to cops.

Just like that punk Kathleen Rice the Nassau DA who gave the two cops probation in the drunk driving case in which another woman was killed...
no charging them with murder no headlines what a
joke.

Three yrs ago?

The biggest cop critics can't find something more recent to whine about than some dope stealing stuff heading to the dump?

I'm glad the policeman negotiated a full pension.

O.K., let's get into something more recent, and affecting all taxpayers in Suffolk County, like the utilazation of Leg. Browning negotiating on behalf of the S.C. P.B.A., to attempt to get both the C.O.P.E. units re-activated, and to put the highway bums back where THEY NEVER SHOULD BE!

Steve Levy tried to negotiate in good faith with the P.B.A., to go on a lag payroll, which they vehemently declined. He said if they did not, he would dis-band the highway patrol unit, a useless division, and I'll give you the financial particulars;

The 9th precint, has 3 lieutenants, 2 captains, and 3 additional supervising officers - these 8 positions alone cost the taxpayers of Suffolk County 1.5 million, that's right, MILLION dollars per year. Add to that the cost of the motorcycle patrols (also dis-banded), and all the additional officers on the highways,(which in total, represent just over 80 miles of highway), and there's a REAL rip off to the taxpayers that Levy finally did something constructive about. A great move, considering that all other state and county workers are on a lag payroll to prevent tapping into the 137 million dollar slush fund kept in place to keep the bond rating of Suffolk County up. Levy was and is looking out for the taxpayers - the useless 9th precinct could care less - that's why they go out of their way to issue an abhorrent amount of tickets, most which are bogus, and when these tickets arrive in the State Building, "The Peoples Court" of Suffolk, you can't win, even with verifiable proof. And, these cops know this.

Now, a cop writes a letter to the South Shore Press, talking about how "Moral" is down - what nerve - none of these officers have even lost their jobs, not one. They've been re-assigned to other precincts. The "Taylor Act" protects these guys jobs, yet they talk about moral. What nerve they have - their arrogance put them in the situation they're now in, and now , NOW, they are willing to go on a lag payroll, two years later? Give me a break - and stop insulting the intelligence of Suffolk County taxpayers!

C.O.P.E. is a federal AND state funded unit. Ask yourself this - has C.O.P.E. actually decreased drug use by teenagers in the area? Are they worth the millions allocated to them? Can you, as a parent, teach your children about the problems regarding drug abuse, an if so, why should we pay millions to this unit?

Sorry SCPD - the "Gaffeney" era is finally over, and even using Newsday as a pulpit to state tickets on the L.I.E. are down 67% from last year blew up in your faces.

Lets not forget the scpd PBA union letter to it's police force to slow down response time and tell the public that they are at risk, prior to the last contract.

Suffolk County does not have a 9th precinct, nor do they have an 8th.

I don't think you're a liar, but the facts you post are hardly correct. I suspect all your "facts" are twisted and slanted.

You also have a virtually scandel free police dept & you live in an excellent area.

Suffolk has 8,000 felony crimes a year with 2,500 cops. Queens has 13,000 felonies a year with 8,000 cops and about the same population. That's more bang-for-the buck

You are the one who is not up to speed. Look at any Highway Patrol prior to their dis-bandment almost two tears ago. It always says, on the pltes"9??"

None of the facts are either twisted nor slanted - this information is not only public record, but ask an, I repeat ANY cop about the 9th precinct.

Quite obviously, you either represent the S.C.P.D., or the P.B.A. Why else would anyone challange the facts and have their I.P. address masked, but not even be a registered user on this forum?

Who is really hiding from the truth? Not I - I've been privy to the negotiations between the Sherriffs Dept., the S.C.P.D., and know three of their attorneys. And you've proffered no valid rebuttal whatsoever.
