The city is facing between a $3.3 million and $5.7 million deficit.

2 retired police captains, 1 retired fire chief, and 1 retired city manager too many.

I suppose the city should have hired drunken vagrants to fill in those positions instead of hiring qualified professionals who were not willing to work for free...

drunken vagrants ? Yes, let's have drug tests for city employees and find out.

Vagrant:
a person who wanders about idly and has no permanent home or employment; vagabond; tramp.

Nakamura confirmed services will inevitably be affected in trying to close a deficit of this size.

“Not only will police and fire be impacted or parks, but so will other services — our street repair crews, our tree trimming,” he said “Any of those services we are really going to have to look at and have to consider thoughtful reductions.”

Depends on the Tax base... what the County can afford....

in Santa Clara County they patch them right and they stay patched... In fact over there some cities do preventive maintenance on their roads...

in Butte County they dump a few shovel loads of tarred gravel into the pothole and roll it with the rear wheels of the truck, three months later they repeat the process on the same pothole...

It all boils down to you get what you pay for....

On the money Gramps, on the money. If government went back to a pure civil service system where workers were actually given a written/performance test to prove they knew what they were being hired for instead of the “oral” exam applicants get now days our roads might be in better shape.

Your point on pay is well taken. As this recession ends I’m already seeing some civil servants (the good ones) leave their government jobs for higher paying private sector jobs.

Liberals have been telling us you’re going to take this and you’re going to like it, so nobody outwardly opposed to diversity for fear of being called a racist. Now, after decades of forced and growing diversity in our country which was shoved down our throats by old Teddy Kennedy and his cohorts, what do we have to show for it? We have a large immigrant population on the government dole. We have domestic terrorism and we have ‘push 1 for English.’ In short, our country is in decline on a fast roller coaster to the third world.

Most welfare is paid to corporate America in the form of payments to the agro-industry and the military industrial complex.

Oh, and about the third world, that’s where corporate America is sending YOUR job. You either work for third world wages or the people who actually run this country are sending YOUR job over -seas.

Whine to the rich and powerful, not to me!

The single biggest recipient of welfare in Butte County is La Malfa farms....owned by our right wing representative who claims to be against "guvmnt handouts"....that is, unless, the government is handing the money to him, I guess.

Ever since ronnie ray-gun started dismantling the civil service system here in Caulifornia and with each succeeding repubican governor since him our civil service system has become pretty much a good old boys club where the litmus test that gets you a government job is whether you're a repubican. Jerry Brown is a liberal butt most of the civil servants between him and the people who actually work are repubicans.

When I started work for the state you had to take a written test and a performance test. Now days you just do oral.

I took a test for heavy equipment operator for a state agency back in the 80’s and I had to do a safety check on and then operate all of the following equipment: 18 wheeler, crawler tractor, tractor mounted flail mower, motor grader, boom truck and backhoe.

Now days to get a job you just need look like dan quail.

My question to all of you out there; why would an engineer working for the state making say $150,000.00 a year stay with the state if he could walk out one door and into another at a private engineering firm and make $250,000.00?

Huummm?

Gramps got it right,“you get what you pay for” in politically run capitalist society.

Or is that a plutocracy ..... What -ever .....

I see we're losing another business owner in town, moving to Colorado. People that vote for democrats, Prop. 30, and more tax increases, I don't blame the business owner for leaving. Just count all the empty cubicles in the strip malls all over town. I see the City of Chico has purchased an expensive bike rack, all this while the pot holes go unrepaired, but we have expensive or should I say overpriced Art to look at.
