The wife and I jut spent eight days on O'AHU and the Big Island and all the pineapple and sugar cane are gone except for a few private plots of pineapple. You are right about large corporations forcing the locals into low paying servant/service jobs.
We had planned on going to Maui but everyone said unless we were rich and liked to golf it isn't worth the money. We were told that there is now more acreage in golf links/turf and high -end resorts than in agriculture.
We're going back next summer and it'll be to the Big Island or KAUA'I. I'm not finished exploring HAWAI'I so it's my first choice.

Back in the late 60's, while in the Marines, and on my way to a less desirable place I was briefly
deployed to Kaneohe MCAS and the Pohakuloa training area on the big Island.

At that time there were sugar cane and pineapple fields all over and I remember seeing columns of smoke as they burned the crops foliage.

A few years ago the wife and I spent 3 weeks touring the islands and we only saw a small wild patch of sugar cane...

Maui is a beautiful island and worth a stop if you got the time,(but we did notice the golf courses) If you guys decide to stop there make sure to take the Road to Hana tour...

Obviously you did not read my post #13....
"With the Iowa political caucuses on the horizon in 2007, presidential candidate Barack Obama made homegrown corn a centerpiece of his plan to slow global warming. And when President George W. Bush signed a law that year requiring oil companies to add billions of gallons of ethanol to their gasoline each year, Bush predicted it would make the country "stronger, cleaner and more secure."

But the ethanol era has proven far more damaging to the environment than politicians promised and much worse than the government admits today.

As farmers rushed to find new places to plant corn, they wiped out millions of acres of conservation land, destroyed habitat and polluted water supplies, an Associated Press investigation found.

Five million acres of land set aside for conservation ó more than Yellowstone, Everglades and Yosemite National Parks combined ó have vanished on Obama's watch.

Landowners filled in wetlands. They plowed into pristine prairies, releasing carbon dioxide that had been locked in the soil.

Sprayers pumped out billions of pounds of fertilizer, some of which seeped into drinking water, contaminated rivers and worsened the huge dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico where marine life can't survive.

The consequences are so severe that environmentalists and many scientists have now rejected corn-based ethanol as bad environmental policy. But the Obama administration stands by it, highlighting its benefits to the farming industry rather than any negative impact."
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/12/etha...

Let's see, we have the government hanging on to an environmental policy which is supposed to help the environment but all evidence points to this policy doing nothing but harming the environment. Something only a Lefty like Ole Comrade could like.

No fixes for Obamacare cancellation issue
Nearly 5 million middle class Ameicans have lost their healthcare policies due to short sighted shoot from the hip liberal bully tactics......and there are no fixes in sight.
Obama and the liberal democrats screwed obamacare up without one vote from the loyal opposition back in march of 2010.
It is up to the liberal democrats to make it right or they should pay the price in the 2014 midterm elections.

Democrats own Obamacare, and its political costs keep rising
"Please don't pass this bill, the public pleaded, speaking in January 2010 through the unlikely medium of the voters of the commonwealth of Massachusetts when they elected Republican Scott Brown to the Senate as the 41st vote against Obamacare.

Democrats went ahead anyway, at the urging of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and with the approval of President Barack Obama. They made that decision knowing that, without a 60th vote in the Senate, the only legislative path forward was for the House to pass a bill identical to the one the Senate passed in December 2009."

By their actions the government thinks that we are all stupid. They treat the citizens of this country like children. The government thinks that we are not smart enough to decide what kind of health insurance that we want so they come up with options that they think are the best for us. Yep, a health insurance plan for 70 year olds with maternity coverage. Brilliant.
The government thinks that they should be able to tell us what to do with our bodies. The illegality of certain drugs that are used purely for recreation are one of the best examples.
And on and on we go.
"The Federal Register, the federal governmentís fun-filled journal of new rules, regulations, and the like, was about 2,600 pages in 1936 (a year after it was created). Today itís over 80,000 pages.
And thatís just at the federal level. Each state government is a pretty giant-sized Twinkie, too. In Massachusetts, all kids in daycare are required by law to brush their teeth after lunch. In Texas ó Texas!ó if you donít have an interior-design license, you canít call yourself an interior designer, lest some unsuspecting consumer trust your opinion on throw-pillow placement without the backing of the state. Almost everywhere, Americans need a license to open a business ó sometimes even a lemonade stand ó but in Milwaukee, you even need a license to go out of business.
The justifications for all of these laws and all of these workers ó the good, the bad, and the ugly ó have one thing in common: the assumption that the rest of us couldnít get by without them, whether we like it or not.
This week the feds took the first steps to ban trans fats. Why? Because trans fats are bad for you and you canít be trusted to avoid them on your own. I bring this up not because it is such an outrageous illustration of my point, but to demonstrate how typical it is. This is what the government does, day in, day out.
Thatís what makes the reaction to Obamacare so interesting. Several times now, the president has endeavored to explain that itís not that big a deal millions of Americans are losing their health-insurance plans against their will. The people who had plans they liked didnít understand that the plans they liked were no good ó they were the actuarial equivalent of trans fats, donít you know? The fact that the people who held them liked them, thought they were good, and wanted to keep them doesnít count for much, because the government knows best. "

Obviously you either missed or more than likely do not understand what you read, posts #18,#22, and #26 address the main reason why corn rather than sugar cane is used as a source of ethanol in the the US...

Allow me to elucidate things to the shallow thinkers...

There are no limits to which multinational corporations(oil companies for one) will not go to in order to preserve their profits, hence...

all the shell corporations buying up prime agricultural properties in the Hawaiian islands and turning them into resorts and golf courses for the well to do at the expense of the natives and the rest of the US citizenry ...

Let me get this straight. Obama has delayed Obamacare so that people whom he told can keep their health plan may actually be able to keep their health plan but when Congress passes a bill putting stating that people can keep their health plan Obama said that he would veto that bill.

Obama does think that you are stupid.

Wrong!

President OBAMA does not "think that you are stupid" OBAMA knows that there are many stupid people out there who honestly think they got a good deal but are wasting good money on inferior health plans offering worthless coverage.

The President has delayed OBAMACARE long enough for the people with substandard coverage to discover they have much better options available to them whereas Congress wants those people to live with the illusion of coverage indefinitely.

Only unprincipled right wing whack jobs would insist that insurance companies be allowed to rip off unsuspecting consumers by selling them a worthless product.

I am not sure how many Republicans you know but you must not know to many conservatives. I am a Republican only when it comes to voting. Thank God the voters in California voted to allow anyone to vote in the primaries irregardless of party affiliation. I can now vote in the Dem primaries as well.
