Amen Michael jones, excellent letter and ideas. I fear our council is to scared and beholding to the two public safety unions to do anything though. They lost a great opportunity with fire, we needed more cuts.

We need to gear up for the inevitable tax increase proposals that will be coming.

80 percent of our salaries and benefits are for police and fire and it's not enough.
In recent days, Chico firefighters have been hitting the streets petitioning business owners and the community to support a nearly $5.3 million SAFER grant from FEMA. If approved by the city, the department could use the two year grant for promotions. Promotions ?

2-18-14, The council is being asked by city manageĀment to waive the two-week sunshining period and approve new contracts with three public safety unions after an initial reading . Citizens and the council should have more time to examine the agreements.

Overtime: Many firefighters earn more in overtime than the average Butte County resident earns in total pay.

In 2012, for example, one fire captain earned $92,716 in overtime.

Thirty-six firefighters earned more than $20,000 annually in overtime alone in 2012. For just those 36, that totaled $1.4 million spent on overtime. At $70,000 apiece, the city could hire 20 firefighters.
