Chico has a noise ordinance so why is the Silver Dollar Fairground allowed to have extremely noisy races going until nearly 11 p.m. on weeknights? The entire south side of Chico has to listen to these guys go ...

Chico residents try closing their windows to block the archaic roar of recreational race cars this weekend as the Silver Dollar Speedway pumps up the Gold Cup of insult. Never mind that that rattling windows and angry growl of short-track dirt flinging motor heads is offensive to the majority of residents. The Speedway has a historic precedent that allows the operators to violate sound ordinances. There will be no disorderly conduct visits by Chico police no matter how many complaints are logged.

you can move out of Chico Dirk - the race track was here before you and contributes a great deal to the community. Can you say same about yourself?

Jim, you cannot say "the majority of residents", that is not true. Where's the petition, where's the survey? How come nobody's ever even agendized a meeting about it?

I'll tell you what's a matter of record - the revenues the races bring into Chico every year.
"Artoberfest" just costs money -$30,000! Oooooo, but doesn't everybody feel so big-city trendy and sophisticated while they run their little artsy-fartsy horsies around in a circle!!!

Admit it Jim, it's a class issue, not an environmental issue.

these people that race have every right to do so. They're having fun. Good "clean" (LOL) family fun. If it bugs you that much that for, what a couple weeks a year(?), there are races, BUY EARPLUGS. Simple as that. Or better yet, go watch sometime. Have some fun yourself with your family. You sound like you could use some of that. GOD, people are just too bitchy anymore! Let's stop all sports, as there are crowds that cheer, and make noise. PLEASE. Get over yourself and go have fun watching them sometime!

I would agree that a majority of us in South Chico hate the races for all the noise pollution they cause. The only person I have found who likes the races lives in Paradise!

South Chico...I lived off of Nord Hwy north of Chico and could still hear the races when I was in my back yard trying to enjoy that old thing we use to call pease and quite.

juanita...not everything is about money.

Move... Again they were here first. It's part of the culture of Chico, and again if all that many people really had a problem something would have been done.

That track has been there forever. Didn't you notice the race track when you moved there? Didn't you think to yourself that maybe these races might happen at night time.(hence the lights surrounding the track.) Nevermind, you're the same type of people that move near airports and then complain there too.

Hey I know, instead of living by a racetrack, find a golf course or a 55+ seniors community to move to. You can have dinner by 4:30 and catch Matlock at 7:00 before bed.

I doubt these pseudo racers need their car uncorked.

Burning up fossil fuels for fun in just downright American, and if we couldn't do that, just think of some poor children- they might end up in gangs if they couldn't go watch the races instead.

Disturbing people's peace and quiet is a right- if it is a tradition. And whose bright idea was it to ask us not to drain our old motor oil into the grates in the gutters? That was a tradition. What I think is REALLY fun is when they do the demolition durbies, ya know, take perfectly good cars and wreck them for FUN and because it is a TRADITION!!!! We need to protect that right, too, it's part of our culture.

Bands in Chico used to be able to rock out till at least 12 or 1 before the fuzz was called.

Sure miss those days. I'm gonna go out and buy me a bigger American flag today. Who needs change?

If a band starts playing anywhere in the south of campus student areas, the cops shut it down usually within a half hour. Regardless of day, regardless of time of day. They say it is just too noisy and they refer to their handy decibel meters and city codes to justify their actions.

These students bring vast amounts of revenue to the city and its citizens and yet the police, city council etc. treat them as second class citizens who must bear the worst when it comes to interpretation of the city's laws.

The police and their superiors refuse to enforce the city's noise ordinance when it comes to the races. This gas-guzzling, exhaust spewing spectacle has races screaming out until upwards of 11:30 pm on some nights. People for miles have to shut their windows
throughout a a nice summer weekend so they and their children can get to sleep at a decent hour. Did I say weekend? How about every weekend all summer long?

Either let the campus areas have daytime and early evening band events, or cite the promoters of the races for noise violations that occur after curfew at ten pm. No one is above the law.

Open letter to the city council: If you choose to continue to ignore this blatant abuse of power, you will be sued. You can be forced to be fair with regards to this ordinance.

I don't care for the noise from the racetrack either, but it didn't used to bother me when it stopped at 10pm. I don't know why the races go on 'til 11pm (on weeknights) now, but it's just a little too late for those of us who have to get up at 6am the next day.

I agree with Jim - Move the races outside of town. They are annoying.

"Pease and quite" huh? Obviously you werent studying up on your spelling skills in your peace and quiet times. If you want PEACE AND QUIET, move out of the CITY. I grew up on 10 acres in the mountains and got plenty of PEACE and QUIET. If you have a problem with noise, sue Union Pacific, the garbage company, Henry Ford, the kid bouncing his basketball outside your trailer... MOVE OUT OF THE CITY IF YOU DONT LIKE NOISE!!!!
