What's that smell? Nicor says it's not them

There are 1 comment on the Chicago Sun-Times story from Nov 16, 2007, titled What's that smell? Nicor says it's not them. In it, Chicago Sun-Times reports that:

“We responded to each and every call, and none of the calls had positive reads for natural gas”

What smells like natural gas but isn't natural gas? Not sure. After about 250 calls from residents spanning nearly 40 miles, neither is Nicor. via Chicago Sun-Times

I find this to be eerie. No cause was found? With all the reportings it justs makes me wonder. What could it be?
