In what ways was this NOT a waste of the taxpayers' money? Maybe the guy just never got the home training to yawn discreetly. Does he deserve jail for that? This is making me sleepy.

First of all- it was NOT a yawn. This is occording to virtually every witness in the courtroom. It was a blatant outright loud and disrespectful response to the so called yawners relative being found giulty!
This guy was in contempt and the judge called him out on it- good for him!

Giving a long jail sentence for making a noise in a court is the act of a jackass, and we have more than enough petty tyrant judges.

If the yawn was loud enough to have people who witnessed it disagree over whether or not it was an intentional sign of disrespect then I've got to side with the judge. Yawns are involuntary actions but unlike a sneeze it is very easy to stifle the sound of a yawn.

I don't like using jail as a contempt of court punishment. Jail is a public expense and should not be used unless a person is a flight risk or a danger to society. 21 days in the clink for a yawn is stupid and the judge should foot the bill for the three week ego trip.

Rather then send somebody to jail for contemp of court, judges should ring up four hour blocks of community service when people disrupt or disrespect the court. Sleepy should have been picking litter up at an interstate exit ramp on Saturday morning.

Was the offender warned first? Or did the gavel come down and a 6 month jail sentence became reality? If the judge could have kept control of his court without sentencing someone to jail, then he should have. I wasn't there of course, but this could be a blatent case of abuse of power by the judge. Dictators, bullies, and thugs use excessive force to accomplish what they want. This judge is on the edge and is dangerous.

Well if it was just a yawn, and the judge did this....I would file a lawsuit, for making a big deal over a normal function of living.... even if nothing came of it, I would sue to make a point. I am not sue happy. I would hound that (censored) judge to the ends of the earth, for something stupid like that.

If it is the contempt that many of the witnesses say, then yes it was justified......

So there you have my take on it.

He was probably scratching his junk as well. Might have added more time to his sentence had he seen it.
