The key diff tween things like meth & salvia versus pot is that pot is generally harmless so long as it's not laced, or excessively overused.

Granted, it's ill-advised to operate vehicles or machinery high on anything, but in terms of long-term damage, pot does very little, if any at all. Smoke inhalation is obviously harsh on the lungs no matter what smoke you inhale, but this can be mitigated by other means of ingestion. THC - the key ingredient in pot the gets one high - coats certain brain cells/neurons and then safely dissolves later. You *can* smoke so much as to kill off those neurons, suffocating the cells with repeated coatings before they can dissolve,(achieving the lasting and irreversible "burn-out" state you see in only the heaviest constant pot users), but you'd really have to work at it. And it's only habit-forming psychologically; there is no physically addictive property in pot unless other external substances are soaked or baked in as an additive, a process known as "lacing."

Salvia & meth, on the other hand, are not strictly natural substances,(though salvia does contain some herbs as a base). They both employ numerous chemicals in their manufacture - some quite toxic, and some *very* habit-forming - to achieve their effects, and are manufactured without any regulation or restraint. Meth is universally and dangerously toxic, and while salvia is less so, a bad batch could still really mess you up. It's hurt and killed people, which is why it is rapidly becoming illegal in more and more states.

The only similarity in pot and meth is that the body develops an almost immediate tolerance to the effects of both during regular use; each requires a higher dose to achieve the same level of "high" achieved initially.

With meth, this effect is very rapid, which is why users escalate from inhalation to injection so often and so quickly, trying to get more effect for less, as their body's dopamine receptors become damaged and thus more and more immune to the drug's effects. The meth replaces the choked-off dopamine, and people on it lose the ability to feel any good emotions without it. This and other physical and neurological damage from meth are both vast and often irreversible.

With pot, there is no permanent damage without an obscene amount of overuse to choke off oxygen from the neurons before the THC can naturally dissolve over time. One would have to make it a full-time job to do this, and even then, it takes years to do any measurable damage. Also, over time, the body's tolerance to the THC in pot fades and returns to pre-use levels.

So no, pot is not the same as meth, other than the fact that it is a risk factor in vehicle and equipment operation, potential loss of employment via drug testing, and legal problems. And salvia, being made with several toxic and sometimes lethal chemicals, is not a safe alternative, and is rightfully illegal because of it.

Now if only they'd legalize pot and monetize it... Might single-handedly save our local economy!

And regarding psychological addiction versus physical addiction:

Psychological addiction is where you think you need it, versus physical, where your body becomes dependent on it.

You can become *psychologically* addicted to sex, video games, chewing gum, or anything else...

But **physical** addiction isn't just all in your head; substances like caffeine, nicotine, alcohol (given time and enough exposure), certain pain meds, heroin, meth, cocaine - and yes, some mixtures/blends of salvia - make your *body* need them after a while, making themselves necessary for even normal bodily biochemical functions, and will result in varying levels of involuntary physical withdrawal symptoms when you quit them.

Younger, developing minds, or those with compulsive, dependent or otherwise weak or damaged mentalities, are more prone to psychological addiction, and should be discouraged from using anything - even pot - in recreation, or as a ill-conceived coping mechanisms. However, most well-balanced grown-ups never experience any psychological addiction to pot and other non-narcotics. So unless you're a nut, you'd be fine with it.
