Having lived in and browsed Topix in other regions, I know that some communities use Topix for civil discussion, a place to share legitimate community events, and to engage in light-hearted, informative debate. Maybe that was your experience, as well.

Not here. Never here.

The Topix discussion forums in Richmond (and other Kentucky communities with a similar demographic), based upon long and thoughtful observation of recurring themes in both the discussions topics and the on- and off-topic replies therein, are mostly frequented, and thus largely dominated, by a sweeping Caucasian majority - though the most productive and thereby busy members of the Richmond area (of all races) don't seem to know or care much about Topix, if at all.

Of those who do, a vast amount are quite typical of the least progressive and most stereotypical podunks our region has ever produced, with all the applicable fixings:

- A deep and abiding selective moral judgementalism that defies and rejects all intelligence, tolerance, common kindness or reason, due in part to the historically poor literacy of the public that denies them an understanding of their own religion, and reinforced by years of selective interpretations by the worst of our local holy men,(who are loath to contradict or denounce their cagey and bigoted congregations if it might cost them those ever-precious tithes)

- A pervading, often overt, but usually denied and/or thinly veiled racism, expressed here with an almost zealous glee, given the pseudo-anonymity afforded herein

- An excessive amount of character assassination attempts by some very bored and petty people who must circulate in some of the skankiest social circles that exist anywhere in the South

- Overt and keen interest in informants and any other threats to the cherished illicit prescription drug trade that has exploded across the state over the past decade or so

So unless you're both willing and able to sift through all this crap to find the few nuggets of kindness, rationality and functional psychology hiding within, I strongly recommend avoiding this site at any and all costs, lest it destroy all your hope in the small but atrocious portion of humanity that is represented here.

Unless you're like me, and see at as sickly amusing... God help me.

Very nice post. You offer an accurate portrayal of topix, maybe even society in general around here. Intelligent discussions are few and far between here. Either you have illiterate pill heads hell bent on defaming someone or pseudo-intellectuals who resort to ad hominem attacks when confronted with facts or differing opinions. Anyone with any intelligence is forced to either treat the site like a visit to the zoo and get amusement from the idiots or stoop to their level and post about rats, pills, jigwater, trailer trash, wal-mart and the other things people gossip about. And since most won't know what this is about I will add this for them. Mello Yellow is better than Mountain Dew. Feel free to discuss.

Guessing from the pure ignorant comment alone, he probably meant steal-ers....as in "those black men stealin' all our women." You know people around here don't spell or speak too well. It always amazes me that hillbilly trash like "STEELERS" actually have this distorted sense of "high and mighty" when the rest of the world looks down at them as bottom of the barrel scum. Folks like "STEELERS" have to talk smack about minorities, women, gays or even other religions. This is because the only thing they feel gives them power is being Caucasian. Like that outcast in high school that clung on to the cool kids but was so looked down upon by those he admired, he had to deflect their distaste onto the other kids. Classic textbook "The world hates me so let me trash everyone else so I can feel better about myself." Poor BUBBA.
