Why are most of the volunteer firefighters you meet overweight slobs? Shouldn't they have some sort of physical standards? I hope my tax money isn't paying for their insurance. They are a liability.

First off most of the volunteer firefighters I know are in decent shape, and the volunteer department does not provide any insurance on them. These people volunteer their time to protect their community.

Lol perhaps you should use your computer for something besides looking at porn and understand why volunteer firefighters are called volunteers. It certainly isn't because they do it for free. They do get paid. They do get benefits and from the looks of them a lot of free pizza beer and doughnuts. I hope my life is never in their hands as they will be out of breath climbing into the fire truck.

I admit I googled it to see if what befuddled said is true. Volunteer comes from some old situation when firefighters were drafted kinda like the military. Could not find details on local stations but most of the sights I googled said they do receive a salary which surprised me.

Those who do the least for others tend to be the ones who criticize those who do the most, or risk the most.

Don't worry, Precious. They'll still rush to help you when you need it, and do their best to save your thankless, worthless life and your undeserved property, even if you happen to be a judgmental douche.

Be sure to tell them how fat they are while they're pulling you out of that wreck, dousing the flames that threaten to destroy your home, or otherwise doing the things you can't/won't.

Til then, enjoy sitting behind your computer, washing down Cheetos with cheap beer or Mountain Dew, gobbling pills, and gumflapping about things and people you know dick about, you Topix-trolling cockbag.

A majority of volunteer firefighters do not receive a salary. So department's have instituted a pay per call standard so that they can keep volunteer firefighters, but most of the time the firefighters only get minimum wage and no benefits. Some departments pay their fire chiefs a salary because they have a lot more work associated with their jobs.

All these guys are about is playing fireman because there not able to be the real deal. There's a lot that goes into being an actual fireman. There's cpat test which I know if most of these wanna be firemen had to to take they would never pass even the beginning of it. There a huge liability driving to fires. Especially in there personal vehicles. They look like dumb u know whats carrying there radios around with them everywhere they go. My house actually did burn down I didn't want them there! They did nothing but walk over what was left smoking cigarets!! The time will come when they do get in the way or actually cause someone more harm than good and the county or whomever is resposible for letting this go on is sued. Your not cute at all noone thinks your cool. I know hard to believe so get out of the way and let the people that are trained an I'm mean really trained do there jobs. Oh and if Im in a wreck or one of my family members are I do not want your help I would rather suffer than take chance on one of u making things worse. And respond to this however u want but people really do make fun of you all. Sorry

I'm sorry but, you really are a dumba$$. You have no idea what you're talking about. These volunteers that you're putting down have to go through the very same testing and training as the "paid" firefighters and they do it because they love the field and they enjoy helping others. If you do not want their help that's your problem and your loss not theirs. Your silly little opinion will not stop them from doing what they do best.

People at these "volunteer" stations are playing firemen lol there isn't one of them that would know what to do at a real fire or in any real situation were an emergency is happening. Most are over weight and there is no real training required. Its the hey look at me I have lights on my vehicle and I get to carry a radio. It just means there special but probably not in the way there hopeing. I know this from experience, I had an issue and volunteer showed first but they had to wait for county. There is a couple of random volunteer stations that do have real firemen there but most of time its the pretend ones your going to have to deal with.

Is it true at Christmas time when they give presents to needy kids that most of the kids are their own kids? I have been told this a couple of times and would hate to think people give them donations for them to just spend it on their own kids.

I agree with what some of you are saying, but some of you are wrong. In a volunteer dept, some are good and some are not. Some are in shape, and some are not. The same goes for paid depts. the CPAT test is relatively new to ky, and until recently was not required. When I became a paid firefighter, I didn't take it. I took it a couple months ago for fun, and it was very tough. As for training, paid and volunteer depts attend the same training sessions, fire schools, etc.. I personally think paid firemen are more professional as a whole, but volunteers are still needed. In rural areas, if a volunteer dept closes down, and fire protection is not available, you cannot obtain homeowners insurance. If you have a mortgage, it's considered automatic default, and you can lose your home. It can be devastating.

You sound like a disgruntled firefighter who couldn't cut it due to mental inadenquencies. Not everyone has the cahonies it takes to put out fire and save lives. Perhaps, you should volunteer at your local library. The dangers you'll see there are the ones you read about.

My dad was a volunteer I paid close attention to the way things were done and even though I love him very much I know why he and several others were there. And I can't stand smell of cigarettes so the desire isn't there for anything else lol
