The net has slowed down locally since EKU resumed classes. TWC provides net for the college as well as Richmond proper, and the increase in usage is the likely culprit, especially at peak hours.

As the load increases and complaints rise, TWC will undoubtedly develop a better infrastructure to cope. But like all ISPs (and mobile carriers), these services are somehow allowed to sell us a service they cannot yet provide (i.e. certain speeds), on the promise that they will do their level best. Only after they have you do they consider - consider, mind you - upgrading their capacity to support your business. That way their profit margins stay well-padded, and they only need spend money on upgrades when absolutely necessary.

This baffles me. If I went to Kroger to get a loaf of bread, but they were nearly out and awaiting a delivery of more bread, I wouldn't find it reasonable to pay them in advance for the whole loaf and then settle for half until it pleased them to provide the rest. Yet this is what we all do, with internet, cell phone service, and other such services. It shouldn't even be legal... but the telecommunications lobby is a powerful voice in the ears and wallets of lawmakers everywhere, so it should come as no real surprise.

I hate dealing with these people. Their tech support is run out of Asia somewhere, probably India. I've done computer networking for years, and the first thing they always tell me to do when I call them complaining of low signal strength on my cable modem is have me reboot it all. I do computer networks. Trust me, I've already done that. Don't make me do it again.

Then they say they're boosting my signal strength to get the modem test run. Ah, miracle, now it works. Well, no shit it works, you just boosted the signal dipshit, which takes care of the problem I was complaining about. Then they tell me my router is the problem.

As if. Fuck TWC and their bullshit. If we had another decent option in Madison County, I'd go for that in a heartbeat.

I recently had problems with my modem losing connection, so I called their tech support. I actually talked to a very polite lady and I could even understand her! She sent signals to the modem to check it, found it was indeed a modem problem and told me to either take it for a replacement, or she would schedule someone to come out with one.
I had already done the usual resetting, rebooting stuff, and she said in that case I didn't have to do it again.

So, I'll give them a thumbs up on this and the problem with my cable channels I also had recently that was quickly taken care of.

TWC does NOT provide internet access for EKU. EKU has windstream fiber running to UK which then runs to Frankfort. Internet access is supplied by the state.

Now if only the students living off-campus would get Slowstream, too, and bug off our poor, struggling TWC! I'm missing my consistent 10mb!

I got rid of time warner because my bill kept growing. I switched to direct tv. They did give me a batter deal and the internet is great, depending on where you live though. There are things that suck about them too though, I don't think they are a very good company to deal with. They offer promotions that they do not honor, pay per view is $5.99 and I do miss free on demand from time warner.

I'm still with TWC, on the data-only plan - no channels, just net access. Under 40 bucks a month, what TV I watch via my pc connected to the TV, using channels' websites (most major networks offer streams of their top shows within a day of airing), plus Windows 7's Media Center web tv channels, Hulu.com , and Netflix's "Watch Instantly" catalog, and EZTV torrents. I get the occasional movies from similar sources.

Satellite net creeps by comparison to cable, and DSL barely keeps up. I've replaced my need for cable or satellite service's overpriced channel packages. It's cheaper, faster, fewer commercials, and I can watch on my own schedule without worrying wit a DVR to record them. A little research, a couple of cords, and I'm golden, and for a fraction of what most pay every month. Can't be beat!
