Matt Bevin, Mitch McConnell's Tea Party Opponent Books Airtime In Kentucky

Kentucky businessman and Tea Party favorite Matthew Bevin has booked ad time in Louisville and Bowling Green, Politico reported on Friday. The move has nearly heightened speculation that the investment executive will soon go public with his plans to oppose Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in 2014.

Bevin has been regarded as an emerging opponent for several months, as he's attended meetings with Kentucky tea party activists and discussed his run with Louisville Tea Party president Sarah Duran.

This heats up an already boiling campaign, as McConnell released an antagonistic ad slamming Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) shortly after she announced her intent to run.

Peter King Says Hillary Clinton Would ‘Destroy’ Rand Paul and Ted Cruz

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) claims he thinks former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D) would "destroy" some of his Republican peers in a potential 2016 matchup.

“I think she’s very strong on foreign policy, and I think that if we nominate someone from our isolationist wing of the party, she’ll destroy them,” King said. "We need somebody that can stand up to her."

King said he's "not a fan" of Cruz, labeling him an "isolationist" and saying he has a "bad image for the party." King also offered his views on a number of other Republicans seen as potential 2016 contenders, including Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

King recently said is "going to look at" running for president in 2016, claiming he is "certainly willing to be out there and be a spokesperson and see where this goes."

If you’re a 2016 GOP presidential hopeful, watch out for Rep. Peter King’s right hook.

While discussing his boxing skills with ABC News’ Rick Klein, King, R-N.Y., who has been talking up his potential presidential ambitions, took jabs at other possible 2016 contenders.

“I’m going to be feeling out the opponents the first few rounds, throwing jabs and jabs and, when they’re not looking, right cross and it’s all over,” King said.

He even offered some praise for the Democrat who would be the odds-on frontrunner, provided she decided to run.

King believes the Republicans don’t stand a chance if they put up the wrong candidate against Hillary Clinton.

“I think she’s very strong on foreign policy, and I think that if we nominate someone from our isolationist wing of the party, she’ll destroy them,” King said, putting Sens. Rand Paul and Ted Cruz squarely in the isolationist category.

King also had criticism for another potential Republican 2016 hopeful, Sen. Marco Rubio, R- Fla., who King believed failed to deliver on providing aid to the Northeast in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

“I have a lot of regard for Sen. Rubio, but I have some hard feelings after what he did, voting against aid to New York,” King told ABC News.“[It] shows some narrowness which I’m not over yet.”

That said, King’s issues with the GOP are not only limited to the domestic front. The congressman also thinks Republicans need to participate in a “coherent” foreign policy dialogue and should focus on avoiding “name calling” and “pandering to people’s fears.”

“I like Paul [Ryan],” King said.“But as far as defense, Paul hasn’t really spoken out on defense.”
“So far … no one is out there talking about national defense,” he continued.“The economy’s important, immigration’s important but the fact is if we don’t survive as a nation, none of that matters.”

Without this kind of discussion, King believes Republicans will face an uphill battle, especially if the Democrats nominate Clinton. And he is not alone in thinking that.

On Friday, White House strategist David Axelrod said Clinton would be the most likely Democratic nominee in 2016.

“I think that Hillary Clinton probably will be the candidate,” Axelrod said Friday morning on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

"should focus on avoiding “name calling” and “pandering to people’s fears.” hahahaha fat chance they will do that. That "re-inventing" concept is DOA. RIP GOP

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Clinton certainly has the resume to be a strong presidential contender: two terms as the first lady during her husband's popular administration, eight years as a U.S. senator from New York and four as a widely-acclaimed secretary of state under President Barack Obama. Not to mention that she has already mounted a presidential bid once before, during the 2008 Democratic primary.

With quite a following among Democrats -- particularly women -- and an expert campaigner as a husband, Clinton is one of the frontrunners for the 2016 nomination. In fact, if the Iowa caucuses were held today, a Public Policy Polling survey found she would win 58 percent of the vote, outstripping the runner-up, Vice President Joe Biden, by a margin of 41 percent.

Rand Paul On A Bailout Of Detroit: "Over My Dead Body"

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on a bailout of Detroit: "I say over my dead body because we're not going to bailout detroit. We don't have the money. Who is going to bailout the United States if we bail out Detroit? I don't wish any harm or ill feelings toward people in Detroit. In fact, I want what is best for Detroit and what's best for Detroit is a quick, abrupt bankruptcy and new management. In bankruptcy -- one of the advantages of bankruptcy is you get to wipe out your old debt. And it is kind of a good thing, it isn't really a harsh thing. We don't put people in jail for debt anymore and we allow people to start a new life."

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2013/0...

Grandrand ought to choose his words carefully. Auto bailout was paid back with interest and before it was due. But teabaggers and Grand OLD Party of No would let a US city board up and cease to exist. Typical. Add the City of Detroit and it's people to that long list I posted that the GOP hate. Keeps getting bigger, recently added the farmers, then the disadvandaged children, and now a whole city. Wow that is "re-inventing" themselves huh? haha

Robert Zimmerman: Obama's Statement Was "Sincere"

George Zimmerman's brother Robert Zimmerman spoke to FOX News shortly after President Obama's surprise appearance in which he spoke about Trayvon Martin and the verdict in the Zimmerman trial.

"I think the president took his time with his remarks, and it was about time they heard from him. I know a lot of people were expecting to hear from the president, and I'm glad he spoke up today," Zimmerman told FOX News.

"You know, I think the president was speaking off the cuff, and I think he was very sincere in his remarks," Zimmerman also said.

"I think that sometimes when we get bogged down in the politics of it all, we forget the missing link is sometimes a person who a young person can relate to or feel encouraged by. I think no matter what any child's race is,... it should be beyond politics to stand united in the sense that we can organize ourselves to better address the needs of children," he said.

Dang, didn't they make sure he was a frightwinged republiCON ready to say what they wanted before they ask him his opinion on the President's remarks. haha At least he had the guts to speak the truth and comprehend what the President was saying. Has Mitch McConnell Met His Match?

DEMOCRATIC senator from Kentucky? The idea may sound far-fetched, but Alison Lundergan Grimes, 34, is about to take her shot. This week, the Kentucky secretary of State filed papers to run against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell—an uphill struggle in which she will try to topple a five-term senator who is twice her age and one of Washington’s most formidable figures.

Grimes does have a lot going for her. She is the daughter of Jerry Lundergan—a two-term state-party chair, a good friend of Bill Clinton’s, and a member of Hillary Clinton’s finance committee in 2008. In other words, though she will have to play catch-up on the money front—McConnell has $7.4 million on hand already—her connections should help her raise considerable cash.“She is one hell of a retail politician, a dynamic speaker,” says Kentucky Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth, who noted that Grimes wowed donors at a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee event on Martha’s Vineyard.“A minimum of $70 million will be spent in the race,” he predicts.“I don’t think there are enough TV stations to run all the ads.”

In her 2011 secretary-of-State campaign, Grimes trounced her Republican opponent by double digits while demonstrating a knack for cutting through clutter. During that campaign, she broadcast a commercial titled “Elsie and Thelma,” which showed her sitting with her two grandmothers, each elderly woman at a laptop, brainstorming about writing campaign ads. Warm and witty, it was a winner. In office, she pushed through an initiative to allow service members overseas to vote electronically and another to keep the addresses of domestic-abuse victims confidential.

Polls suggest that a Grimes-McConnell race would be close, with one recent survey showing McConnell up 7 points and another showing a 45-45 tie. That said, it’s true that the basic realities of Kentucky politics favor Republicans. Moreover, McConnell is known for playing hardball on the campaign trail. Actress Ashley Judd toyed with entering the race, but bowed out after McConnell aides were caught on a leaked tape looking for ways to use her admission of past drug abuse against her. More recently McConnell launched an ad against Grimes that showed her head attached to the body of Ellen DeGeneres as the talk-show host danced with President Obama. Grimes, the commercial proclaimed, is “not ready for primetime.”

In response to the ad, Grimes told a local television reporter,“This is one Kentucky woman who is not going to be bullied.” That much seems clear. What we won’t know until next year is whether she can win.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2013/07...

Guess he won't be bullying her. Wonder if he ask Ellen to use her in his ad since he hate gays/lesbians and she back President Obama. Might have to bring that to the show's attention. He might not be able to buy this one.

From KENTUCKY's website:

Mitch McConnell suddenly confronts rough political road

WASHINGTON — Usually a picture of self-assured calm and control, Mitch McConnell is having a rough week.

When the Senate worked its way out of a nasty fight over presidential nominations and the filibuster, the credit went not to the Senate Republican leader but to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. McConnell’s clout with his own caucus was questioned. It seemed uncharacteristic for the Kentucky Republican, long regarded as a master of the Senate’s byzantine rhythms.

McConnell’s penchant for deftly navigating political landmines is in for a lengthy test. He’s an insider’s insider, but he can’t appear to be so back home. He’s been known for keeping his raucous caucus in line, but there have been cracks. And while he has a solid conservative voting record, it’s not conservative enough for the increasingly prominent groups that are influencing Republican voters.

McConnell is the Democrats’ top incumbent target in the 2014 Senate elections. His race is expected to be the nation’s most expensive.“I think it’s going to be easy to make this a close race, but it’s going to take a lot to beat him,” said Jennifer Duffy, Senate analyst for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

McConnell’s camp disputes any notion that the week’s turmoil exposed fresh political cracks.

They’re also buoyed by McConnell’s history of winning tough races. Only once, in 2002, did McConnell get more than 55 percent. Democrats see strong potential for likely nominee Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky’s secretary of state. Because she has no Washington record, she can paint McConnell as a creature of the Capitol who’s forgotten the plain folks of the Bluegrass State.

“The race is going to be whether McConnell can make this a race against Obama or Alison can make this a race against McConnell,” said former Kentucky Treasurer Jonathan Miller, a Democrat.

This week’s Senate chaos gives Democrats attractive material. Monday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee announced “a new campaign about real consequences Kentuckians suffer at the hands of Mitch McConnell.” Thursday, the headline on its press release was “McConnell Losing Influence.”

Their target is the turmoil over the “nuclear option,” a Democratic-driven effort to change Senate rules to make it easier for non-judicial nominees to win confirmation with 51 votes. Sixty is now needed to curtail debate.

McConnell wanted an accord months ago, and in June he told the White House to withdraw two controversial National Labor Relations Board nominees, replace them with two others, and the process would move forward. He also wanted assurance from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., not to invoke the nuclear option for the rest of this Congress, which runs until January 2015.

Reid said no. So McCain and other Republicans, who were willing to accept votes on controversial nominees without imposing a long-term 51-vote threshold, negotiated.

At Reid’s request, McConnell met with the Nevada Democrat just minutes before Reid and McCain went on the Senate floor Tuesday to announce their agreement (Reid wanted to tell McConnell about the two labor nominees). McCain became the public face of compromise. Democrats were lavish in their praise, suggesting that the maverick Republican had saved the Senate.

Privately, there was grumbling. Senators said McConnell told them he could have gotten a better deal, even as he told reporters he was pleased. Stewart said that’s not unusual.“The two aren’t mutually exclusive,” he said.

Such maneuvers are likely to further tarnish McConnell with diehard conservatives, a problem that’s been building for months. During last month’s immigration debate, a bipartisan “Gang of Eight” crafted legislation that won Senate approval, as 14 Republicans backed a path to citizenship for the nation’s estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants.

Some conservatives were furious at the Gang, and that McConnell didn’t use procedural devices to stall or dilute the bill, even though his caucus was solidly behind moving forward and won the ability to offer amendments. But to the right, the debate was another example of why conservatives need to be wary.

Their ire was stirred in January, when Congress and Obama agreed to raise taxes as part of a budget deal. ForAmerica, a conservative group, began running an ad picturing McConnell with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, asking “Whose Side Are You On?” Talk show host Glenn Beck lumped McConnell with McCain and other mainstream Republicans, saying he’d “written those guys off.”

So far, McConnell doesn’t appear to have a serious conservative challenge, and Republicans dismiss the notion conservatives will stay home in November 2014. McConnell did vote no on the immigration bill, he ranks ninth on this year’s Heritage Action conservative scorecard, and he regularly addresses the Senate on the evils of the 2010 health care law.

Kentucky Republicans are counting on voters seeing the bigger picture.“McConnell’s a known, and he’s been voting conservative for years,” said Louisville-based Republican consultant Ted Jackson.“That is Kentucky.”
