The earlier analysis about the economic feasibility about Richmond support additional college bars is correct . There were nights that all of them were empty . One to two nights of business is not enough .

I work here in Richmond for almost 2 decades, before that I was in high school in Lexington and ALWAYS came to Richmond for their night life!! Great times!! I've watched richnond Main Street go from a great Vegas strip to western styled businesses which have to advertise avthyrsday night live with music to get people to come out there. When winter comes, live bands and such to try to catch the public to come in downtown will not work. This +is* a college town. Without eku this is a ghost town. Now a days, by 830 the locals are in bed and the streets are DEAD! Ghost town Richmond. This college with the new president, may survive. He knows what he's doing as far as I can tell. The home games with the awesome fireworks and entertainment are showing thestudents their appreciated. I know a lot of students who have left to go to uk. Why not?!? Pay close to the same tuition for a better named college with a great sports team, and awesome nightlife!! Enrollment at eku had been at an all time low. Yeah, they RACE to the western style businesses ya no! The locals are scared of the fireworks noise, their not use to noise after 8, as I was working it was funny to see the locals freaking out from the firework noise. The bars in richnond was the only thing that kept this town alive. The businesses as well. Such a shame the mayor in this town doesn't care about local business or the towns economy. That's why richnond is broke, and eku enrollment went down as uk went up. Sad! I've been here 20 years and watched a live, upbeat, fun town turn into a desolate, sad , dead, ghost town. After 8 u locals no the streets are dead, no one comes out after 8. Other than going to class, going out to eat... I guess going to lexibgton to have fun, Richmond had nothing to boast about. Because of destroying of downtown, a lot of local stores have thrown in the towel. Look at lees, their gone by 9, look inside Arby's after 8, no one. No ones left here , kids all go elsewhere for work and enlntertainment. Pills and heroin is outlet recreation time in richnond.. A college kid found dead in his dorm this month.. Sad. The old professor bitching about bars must be a geek. Let's just have them shoutout at has stations and downtown now like it has been, better ?? No bars and it's still happening? Now the gangs aren't downtown, now their living here and supplying Richmond out recreational time, we have a high demand for door here in richnond because there IS nothing to do, college kids are finding em too. Thank u richmond for taking our bars away and making this town so desolate!! No one from surrounding counties come here anymore , except if they can find their dope here. At this rate, Richmond is broke and the college town has no students wanting to b here. Proffessor says they come for an education, those here leave to transfer ASAP or live here and leave after graduation for better money and entertainment. This has ruined Richmond. Why richnond is broke and cops chasing people in town for no seat belt.. I've been here 20 years and watched this town die.. Sad.. I hope eku new president can bring life back to us, he's doing great so far, home game nights it almost looks as if this town coming back to life.. But after the games everyone shoots down 75 and gone for entertainment.

I've been here my whole life and have watched downtown die. It saddens me that our local leaders only care about padding their own pockets. They have bought up most of Richmond and ran the local businesses out. I love this town but it's getting harder to live here.

Wow! Richnond register posted behavior of mayor Barnes during meeting with a sunset Ave residence,

“Do not raise your voice at me,” Barnes said twice before walking away.

When Maupin again said she wanted her sidewalk replaced, Barnes left the meeting. As he drove off, King pointed to his car and announced she was going to run for mayor and “beat that man.”

Wow!! And Howard his sidekick cussed out king.
Your not playing about them lining their pockets, he peels out mad from the meeting??-- why out downtown bars are gone and richnond is broke. THEY ran this town to the ground.. Behavior of a mayor?? Wow!

. I've lived on Richmond all my life. I remember my parents talking about the good old days going to The Dog and all the other bars. And I've old enough to go to the bars for about 2 years. and it sad because I go to all these bars now and see how business gets ran off by the police I left a time or to just not get hassled by them . Richmond does not stand a chance if we don't get these dirty people out of office. I see more and more small business shutting down. Richmond needs to be rebuilt by common and understanding individuals that know what made Richmond "Richmond" and that's the students of eastern.

Sucks. We had a good time walking from place to place back in the day, lines all the way up the street to get in places.

Dude there are a lot of bars in Richmond, nice bars at that. The country is in a depression. People are not going out drinking, and students at eku got higher tuition fees compared to back in the day. Not to mention a bleak job market when they graduate.

As a Professor at EKU, that wishes to remain anonymous, I can attest to the fact that without the bars, the attendance of the student population is vastly better. As a group, the student population is more inclined to receive an education, rather than trading sexual favors for grades as has been so prevalent in the years gone by.
If it were put to a vote from the faculty on campus, downtown bars that cater to students and the very ilk that run them would forever remain a thing of the past.
And if a vote like that were to happen, then Eku might as well become a ghost school. Back in the day when Richmond had lots of bars, Eku's enrollement was sky high. Now, it's barely getting by. You take all the fun out, no one will want to come here. It might not be much but it is something. Students leave their small towns to go to somewhere like Richmond. If Richmond becomes an even smaller, boring town, no one will want to come here. I've lived here my whole life and it's not just college students that go out. Older people go out as well. Paddy wagon is a bar for the older students and the people of Richmond. So next time "professor" think before you say something. The bars aren't just for students. They are for the people of Richmond who do like to go out and enjoy their night.

And we the people of Richmond, not counting the dopers, are glad they are gone. We remember the fights, shootings, drunks in the road, and never want to return there.

Have you ever wondered how many people each bar was responsible for harming or the innocent children that was in harms way from the drunks? The government says liquor is a drug, so bar owners by default are drug dealers. We do not need them. We do not want them.

As for Richmond being a smaller town. Damn good idea boys!!! If we could swing back to the 60's, we would all be better off.

Calm down goober, this isn't Mayberry.Do you believe everything the gubment tells you? They call it a drug, then make it legal, and make a profit off of it. It might be a drug, but it is LEGAL. And adults have a right to drink if they want .. even in the 60's. Idiot.

Was at Eastern back in 1991-1993 moved back home then moved back to Richmond from 1994-1998 then to Lexington. Back then Richmond had the Dog, The Endzone, T. Bombs, Fat Cats, Bottles, Phone 3, Nashville Sound (which later became the Manhattan Club), Tazwells, Rascals (Which later became the Silver Star), O'Riley's J. Sutters J. Sutters then became the Zoo the went back to J. Sutters. It was fun to go downtown and party. Dime draft whiskey wednesdays two for tuesdays. 1.25 whiskey and cokes 50 cent whiskey it was wild.

I just moved back to Richmond. I graduated from EKU in the 80's. I was shocked to see that nearly all of the bars are gone. Of course I an past an age that I would want to frequent them now. But, first street is totally government offices now.
I remember 1890's, T Bombs and Phone 3. Phone 3 always had a great live bands. The DOG is also gone. J Sutters Mill is now a parking lot and O'Rileys is now the Paddy Wagon. The Paddy Wagon is a wonderful place to eat by the way and much nicer than the former O'Rileys. I also remember Madison Gardens being a biker bar and it is now a nice place to enjoy a meal.
I wonder though, does anyone else miss having the downtown area as it was in the 80's? Also, what do the college kids do now? There was line of students walking back home to the dorms after the bars closed back in the day. Do they drive to Lexington and back, oh that is a scary thought.
Has to be because of that noise ordinance.

60's and early 70's. Dirty Ernie's, the Dog, Poopiotzies right beside the Dog, Red Barn, The Iron Gate, and one more I can't remember, but, enough of them to spend that G.I. Bill money. 2 years, no Gergen but one hell of a lot of fun.

I remember you guys. The reason we had to have police on duty down there all night long. Yea, I remember your stench.

The bars are gone and most are happier.

Little self righteous aren't you there pal? Always thought the community enjoyed our contribution to the nation and then to the community.
