We currently live in Bowling Green, Ky. I'm really sick of the Nashville influence on the area though. Richmond/Lexington area has always been a favorite of mine to visit. How would you say the quality of life is? How is the job scene? Any suggestions or info about the area would be greatly appreciated.

Jobs are hard to come by. Supposedly WalMart didn't even hire seasonal help. Quality of life.... as with all things it is what you make of it. If you are a druggie, then your quality will be poor. With the addition of the arts center on campus, Richmond has access to more culture. Really research prospective areas to live. If it's cheap, then it's a bad neighborhood.

You dont want to move to Richmond.. This is a political city and really have to know someone to get a decent job. Lexington you would be better off with employment there. Besides that the only good thing about Lexington is the uk wildcats.. Both city's are pretty and have alot of historic buildings but Lexington would be my choice I've had to many bad experiences I'n richmond and I keep to myself.

Berea is a quiant town...low cost of living, great houses (new and old)...Berea College and Eastern Ky University often have great jobs. Lexington is 30 mins away and has shared transportation available to work at UK. If you aren't into the "True Blue Fan Nation" then here isn't the place!

In response to 'welcome's comment about jobs at EKU. Unless you are a student or a professor, there aren't any jobs there (believe me I've been looking for a job for 2 years). I don't know anything about Berea College though.

Wow, sounds like Richmond is about the same as Bowling Green. You must know people to get much done. In fact, maybe that is just anywhere in the state. I know in my research of Lexington, apartments are small and very over priced. Berea is a beautiful little town but I don't want to live very far from a job(no more than 15 minutes). Thanks for the input so far though guys!!

I have lived in Richmond all my life and raised two daughters here and I simply love this town. Sure you have drugs, unemployment, whatever, but My wife and I and my daughters have always been employed and live a good life here. I also like Berea which is just 15- 20 min south of Richmond. All towns have good and bad, but I think you would love Richmond.

In Berea, the college has too much control over the town. The City council are all graduates of Berea College. Richmond isnt as bad. EKU does not try to control Richmond. There is some slummy areas in Richmond, near the bars and liquor stores. Overall Richmond is ok.

. This is a redicilous statement you must be buddies with most of them if you think Berea is worse than Richmond. I work at Eku I know for a fact how political it is because I got my job the same way you gotta know someone Eku controls the city government also it controls the money flow to Richmond. The higher up bosses at Eku and the Richmond city big wigs are all friend do why you think Richmond is broke. So I don't know what world you are I'n but it isn't this one

- I live here & make good money at a stable job.

- The worst of Richmond's neighborhoods aren't nearly as bad as some of the best in other areas in Kentucky and beyond.

- Drugs and the associated losers who have dealings with them stay out of the nicer, affluent areas, so as long as you avoid moving into a HUD slum, college kid-infested party apartments, or a trailer park, you'll be fine.

- And the petty political crap at the city/county levels isn't as big a deal as some constant forum complainers make it out to be; just small town politics that no one really gives a crap about unless they choose to feel personally offended by it.

But please be warned: This forum is overpopulated with some of the very worst this area has to offer. DO NOT consider Richmond's Topix Forum to be a reliable source of info, nor what you read here an accurate portrayal of what to expect!

Come visit a few times. Tour the area. Take some time to see for yourself. Then you can make an informed decision.

...

If you're willing to work and do what it takes to make a living, have marketable skills, and a clean record, there's no reason why you couldn't do every bit as well or better than I have, and I'm not doing too shabby.

Good luck.

Same thing with the jail and the cops. They can take from you what they like. It is a bootlegging town and even the judges are crooked and the captin of the RPD just went to jail for over 10 charges of child porn. People end up missing and no help from the cops but they sure can take a family member to jail of a missing couple from a 20 year warrant and still no help finding the missing. And there has been a lot more missing to that never been found. But if you like drunks, pill heads, junkies, queers and dirty needles on the ground down town this may be the place for you. If I was you I would not even pull off on the off ramps.

And you must be one of the ones i speak of.Thank god I stayed on the Lexington side of Clay's Ferry on our nice house boat. While you was learning to drive I was driving our 18 ft sea ray runabout.I would never live in a dirty town as like Richturd is. If you do move to Richmond get you some land near the Army depot I bet it is cheap. We will hear of the impact of burning off all of the nerve gas the county had at the Richmond Army depot in a few years. I guess I am lying about that too?

I meant most of the nerve gas in the US and what ever the government has not told the people about. I wonder really what all that they are getting rid of out there. They will never tell the truth just enough to justify what they are doing out there.I bet green peace would have a field day if they really new the truth. Say whatever you want some know what is going on and you just keep your job at Micky dees Jessery and everybody will be happy. Make sure you pull in the hereby from the front of the trailer so you do not get fined. lol

Why do you think they let the bootleggers get by with all that they do? If it wasn't for that and all the liquor stores, crappy bars there would be no tax money and Richmond would be in big trouble.

As far as arresting the father of the girl that is missing. I know the guy really well. He his a racist and always plays the race card when he dint get his way. He is a drug dealer and he probably needs to be looked at for multiple crimes. People he worked with told me and this is way more then 1 person that they worked with him for over 4 years and never heard him mention anything about his daughter until he went missing mind you these are the people that see him every day and knows him well. He also has many Skeltons I'n his closet and isn't as good as a guy as everybody thinks.

Who do you think go to these bars around here? It's college student and college employees and city officials plus there buddies. So yes Eku and the city does control all the money flow through this town. I wished I could tell you how Eku contract work is handled but I'd lose my job every body would be very surprised how there tax dollars are spent..

Thanks for all of the input so far everybody! Can anybody tell me what areas to stay away from when looking at potential apartments? We have a 3 year old child and safety is very important. Also, any info on new businesses coming in and other development would be great.
