It is legal as long as you are not involved in any illegal activities, if you are caught doing anything illegal then you will be charged with possession of a scanner while being involved with whatever the crime was. You can have one in your car if you are a member of the media or a first responder, but you must have ID proving that you are one or the other.

Yes, it is legal. And in certain instances, it is legal to have them in your car as well.

I have been wanting one too. I was told now that it's digital, that you can't hear it. It's encrypted or something.

While the police may overlook the rescue rangers having a scanner in their car, it is not legal to do. The only legal way to have a scanner in your car is to hold a valid Amateur Radio Operators License. You have that, you can have any radio you want.
thanks

Do you have to open your mouth and remove all doubt about how stupid you really are? If you read the link that mobil scanner posted you'll see that what I wrote was THE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH,[email protected]

"a person holding a valid license issued by the
Federal Communications Commission in the amateur radio service;"

Everybody else, police officers included, must have written permission from the Chief of Police.

Buy a Uniden trunktracker with the decoder board. It cost a little more, but it will follow the trunk and stay with a conversation and the decoder is capable of decoding the scrambled info when they go to the digital signal. Mine picks up KSP with no trouble and they have been encrypted digital for a while now. Also there is a MDT, Mobile Data Terminal jack off the descriminator for decoding the information to and from the computers systems they use in their cars. It has to be hooked to a computer, but there is lots of info there as well.
The entire setup can be had for around 400 dollars.

The decoder plugs in, and the discriminator tap, if you have to ask, leave it alone or your scanner will not work anymore.

Or do like the guy said and buy a scanner ready to go. Remember, the police always want to hide on encrypted frequencies or private channels, but they cannot hide, they are public servants, and the public has a right to listen. So when they get a new toy, some scanner company breaks it and sells a receiver. It's like they say Cell Phones are private. Yea, right.... I hope you do not believe that. Or if you do, you have not seen the right radio. If its in the air, it can be listened to.

Madison County's new radio system is NOT encrypted..yet.. but, it IS digital. Just like KSP.

Before they put up all these new towers, Madison County was Motorola Type II Trunked, meaning you could listen to most of what went on with a simple trunking scanner. Those days are over.

Now, You need to have a P25 digital trunking scanner. They are still trunked, but are using P25 digital now.

A digital scanner at RadioShack runs around $500, sometimes less if you catch them on sale.

I don't think Madison County has switched just yet. They are about ready to but I don't think they have done it yet.

My scanner is a regular trunked one and it picks them up just fine, so they haven't switched yet.

But when they do, and they will, enjoy hearing nothingness.
