The smoking ban in Richmond, or in any other city or state of this country, is flat-out wrong, as long as tobacco sale and use is considered legal and taxed.

While I agree that smoking in places like hospitals or government buildings should not be allowed, privately owned businesses (like The Whiskey Barrel) should have every right to allow whatever legal behavior they wish to go on within their walls. I applaud the fact that they do so in spite of local busybodies who have an unlawful and over-inflated sense of their own authority.

The government not only allows tobacco sales, it profits handsomely from outrageous taxes upon them. So they have absolutely no right to try to pseudo-criminalize tobacco use, even if it is just to cater to the socialist aspirations of voters who would infringe upon the rights of business and property owners, like yourself.

Here's how it should work: If you do not like the environment of a place of business, take your business elsewhere. You have that right. If the business then decides they want your patronage back, they should be free to take whatever action they wish, to include making their business smoke free, or not, and their business will either succeed or suffer accordingly. Beyond that, it really shouldn't be anyone else's concern.

They need to have a manager!! It's sad when you go one night and order a shot and have it made three different ways. Then turn around a few weeks later and have the same shot almost double in price. Get it together boys!!

I've only been there twice, but I didn't think it was that bad. Not really my kind of place, but endlessly entertaining if you enjoy people-watching. Surprisingly clean bathroom. A little loud, a little smoky, a lot trashy but, if you don't like those things, nobody's going to force you to go there.

Richmond needs another bar? I don't think so, there are already to many now. Richmond in itself looks like it needs a good bath. There are trashed houses and yards and these are being published in the local paper for everyone to see how nasty that town is. Maybe the rest of the bars need to be cleaned up like First Street was. As far as the Whiskey, it's the same low life dump that attracts the trash of society. Same as the Maverick, just a different name.
first street never should have been killed...Richmond is a college town..it USED to be a fun place unt il the fun police killed it all...I remember when u could have fun here now its all gone...sure the wagon, jerzees, copper mill(players) are there but its not tbombs...the whiskey barell is tryin to bring that back....

This is a failed effort. The only people that think different are the investors. But I hear the prices have already risen. That always preceeds closure. So we can assume the end is close. Maybe that building would make a good alcoholics rehab site.

So see ya Whisky Barrel.

It is a good place, good atmosphere and nice owners the issue is the lack of management. I understand if there are some mix ups but come on doubling prices and not knowing how to make a shot. It is a good idea to have nice looking bartenders, but it is a better idea to have ones who wait on people quickly and know what they are doing. JD is a good person who is trying to make a living but he needs to invest in quality people.

if the head of the nail you hit had a brain in it, you'd have killed it instantly. abso-fricken-lutely agree. and i don't even smoke! sissylunged socialists have no business dictating what a business owner allows within their doors, so long as it's legal. the douches that implemented the local smoking ordinance weren't even elected officials. and to try and demonize the use of a product that the government turns around and happily taxes to the gills seems a 2-faced approach. if it's that damned terrible, they need to make it illegal. but that's not happening, because half of them smoke, and the rest love the tax money they get from it. those sniveling about it really are without a clue. simply hike your little foo-foo asses elsewhere if it wrinkles your nose so much. how hard is that?

I visited the wiskey barrel Friday night, invited some of my friends from Lexington and Winchester to give it a try. Meet JD in the front of the bar, seemed very nice, said hello to all the gals and hand shakes for the guys. Said he was happy to have us. What a good start. We went in ordered a few drinks. Had to stand around for a while, it was packed. We danced to a few songs and talked for a few minutes. We were ready to stay for a while. Now our group was mixed smokers and non smokers. We were there for all most an hour and we all decided to leave because of the smoke. It was extremely thick. I would figure a fan in a window or some kind of draft. I'm a non smoker but can stand to be around it because my friends smoke. Not last night. Probably not the place for us. Wish there was a smoking area outside like most other places to accommodate both smokers and non smokers or smoke eaters inside. Best of luck JD.

One of the bar tenders is rude as can be. She acts like she is better than everyone. She carded me four times and couldn't remember what I ordered and there were only 8 people in the bar. She needs a reality check. I work as a nurse and enjoy going out when I can so I do not need to be treated like that!
Why would she card you at the bar anyway when you are asked to show ID as soon as you go in. Obviously if you're in the place, you are of age. Last time I was there the guy working the door was a good friend of mine, knows me very well, and still checked my ID. They are very careful about carding everyone as far as I've seen the few times I've been there so why would the bartender need to check it as well?

On slow nights like through the week they don't have someone at the door. The bartender checks the id's. Haven't been there for awhile but from what I hear it hasn't gotten any better as far as pricing or the staff, to bad.
