Let me explain our band fees. Follow this link to the form that we all receive, that states them clearly.

http://www.themadisoncentralband.com/files/44...

The costs are high. Most parents gladly work hard and pay the dues. And yes, there are some parents that do not pay, the school cannot stop the child from being in the band if their parents are to cheap to pay their fair share, and it is not held against the child. It is not the childs fault their parents are sorry individuals.

And to those parents, and theres just a few, that do not pay the fees. Everyone knows who you are so don't act all uppity.

The band receives no funding from the schools like so called sports teams do. Take football, they get the 5 dollar gate fee from every person that goes to the game and many are not there to see the team. At every football game the band is required to be there, and that is over 150 people, and we have parents that support us so there is a large part of the gate charge that should belong to the band. Not to mention that making a national level band sit and cheer a team than cannot win a game and then get nothing out of it is insane.

Oh did you not know that the Madison Central Band is the State Champion again, and expected to take the Nationals. Did you know we got invited to march in the Macy's day parade, if we can get our moneys together since our school does not support us at all.

Do you have any idea the effort we put forth to achieve this? Take this past fall break, we did not get a break, we practiced every day, same as always. And summer break? We are on the field with our teachers every day all day just to train.

Many days we practice from 8 in the morning to 9 at night, and we do it to be the best, but do we ever get school recognition? No.

The band, contrary to popular belief is not made up of tards. It takes major skills and intelligence to complete our routines. Things I assure you that a football or baseball player could not accomplish. They just do not have the skills. I am not speaking ill of them, but they use a different skill set to chase a ball and throw it. In a uniform bought and paid for by the school using equipment bought and paid for by the school. Taken to the game in a vehicle they do not have to pay the driver to drive.

I just thought of something the school does for the band. They let our trophies and plaques and awards from competitions all across the nation stand in their display cases. At least I don't think we have to pay for that.

I am in my senior year with the band, and loved every minute of it. Last year, my parents were out 1653.00 dollars just for band. But they support me, and I support my school band, even if my school board does not care at all.

The problem is the school board has never given the band the same funding and such as the sports teams. Even when I was in band several years ago, we also were number one but outside the band members and friends no one knew.

I agree the band should be supported by the school. Every team all across the board same as every other entity should all be treated the same.

On a seperate note, are you aware it costs over 1600 per year to have a child in Cheerleading at MCHS. Plenty of fees there and if they are not paid, unlike you say the band, they are not on the team. And yes, they have to cheer even when those important players cannot win anything.

If you ask me the system should reward victories appropriately. No wins, no money. Nuff said!

The entire issue could be resolved by firing those high paid chaff and losing the unneeded positions and spending the damn money on the school itself, not the washed out teachers that get the superintendents jobs.

Please don't talk about the band in a public forum. I'm sure you mean well, but you have no access to much of the information to which you refer. The band is treated very well by the Madison County Board of Education AND the Madison Central Administration, receives substantial funding, and is held in great esteem by the board.
Thank you.

Thank you.

My son is in the band and all the information being talked about is in the link the op posted.

Taken fron the link

"Families with more than one student in the band will pay $600 for the first student and $300 for each additional sibling in the band."

"Additional Expenses
Band Camp Meals – Lunch during band camp is provided free of charge by the school. Dinner will be available for a cost of $5 per meal. Students are not permitted to leave during the dinner hour so if they do not wish to purchase dinner they may bring a sack meal from home.
Marching Shoes -$35 (new students and any returning student who needs a new pair)
Gloves -$10
Competition Meals -$6 per meal
Color Guard – Warm –ups and other gear outside of basic uniform will be extra. Costs vary.
State Competition Travel and Meal Expenses – To be determined
Concert Season – Students participating in the Wind Ensemble or Symphonic concert bands will have additional concert attire rental or purchase fees. These fees will not be due until after marching season.
Concert Season Travel – Any travel during the spring concert and festival season will carry an additional cost.
Winter Guard/Indoor Percussion – Students participating in Winter Guard or Indoor Percussion will have a Fair Share Contribution separate from the marching band for those activities. FSC will be determined by the Winter Guard/Indoor Percussion staff."

Now there is about 150 kids in the band this year, times $600 and thats a bit less than a hundred thousand dollars band fees. Plus the extras listed also.

How much does it cost to play football? I did not have to buy or pay anything for my oldest two years ago. Everything was furnished by the school.

These costs also do not cover the instruments, or anyones time as we sit in cars day after day waiting for band practise to end. Or in the parking lots at 1 in the morning waiting for the band to get back.

You can't say I don't know what I am talking about, I and hundreds of other parents do it every day. And hell yes I think the school should help more. They have a fantastic band that wins compitetions everywhere they go, and should be rewarded somehow.

I can say it don't seem fair if one group like the football team gets the total gate if the band is there preforming also. The money made from the event should be split between the groups performing, both football and band.

Most of what you say is probably correct, except the part about being "State Champions again". The state finals won't be held until the end of October and though MCHS usually has a very good band, I only recall one time that they won state, and that has been several years back. They were state runner-up in their division in 2009 but that's as close as they've come in a while.

They don't get the total gate. It goes into one fund. That's why no one should listen to this website. It's all misinformation!

So tired of the band spewing their victimization of the system. They are supported and treated very well by administration. Get your band director to do his due diligence and shut up. The band acts like they can do whatever they want half the time and follow their own rules. Get over yourselves!

I can't believe this is actually a thread on TOPIX. The band has been well supported by the board and adminstration for the last couple of years despite the band director's leadership. The students work very hard and do a great job. Glad they made it to state finals. There is awesome support by parents as well. Wish they had placed higher, they are very talented. One problem is other schools have many more students involved in band than MC does. For a school of almost 1800, it's odd that there are not more students on the field participating. It is hard to compete with other schools who have more kids on the field. Could that have to do with leadership? However, that may not be the problem, most activities and sports are experiencing the same thing these days. Kids are more interested in getting jobs, car keys and many have more responsibilities at home. Many have less parental support to get involved in school activities... still makes you wonder why some programs are successful and others are not...

Football DOES not get the entire gate! It goes into the ATHLETIC fund just like the gate for all games! Get your facts straight before you go on sites like this. The band does get money from the school. It is considered co-curricular and they are funded. I agree it does not come close to covering the expenses they want or need but the money given to any group does not cover the entire cost of their of their expenses. There are many groups that get NO money at all. The dance team gets NO money at all nor do the cheerleaders. That is why they have been allowed oportunities to fund raise in other ways. In addition, each athletic group must pay for transportation out of their own funds that is not completely covered by the small portion alloted by the board. EVERY GROUP fundraises for transportation. COngratulations for making it through to your senior year of band but please don't let disgruntled adults give you the wrong information which is where you have recieved some of this info. Please speak with your building principal or school finance official and they can explain school finance to you in detail. You clearly do not know everything. Congratulations on a very successful season.

NOT.....Cry Me A River Already....Baseball Players Are Out Over A Thousand At The Gotgo...Not Counting The Other Monies Needed Throughout The Year...Everything Costs Money....The Band Isn't The Only Ones Who Pay Out Of Pocket Expenses....I Know Flag Girls who couldn't come up with the fees this year and are out So Proud Student Don't Bash Other People In Hard Times...Maybe Your Day Will Come Someday And Then You Will Understand Hard Times, Maybe You Won't Place Yourself On A Pedestal Then...
The Football Gate Moneys Does Not Go To The Football Team But It Should All Be The Football Teams Money....They Work Hard, In Preparations, And Struggle Fighting Through The Game, Expelling All Efforts Of Strength & Durability. While The Band If There, Sits Maybe Plays a song or two, Cheerleaders holler & Jump A Bit, And The Fans Sit & Watch, Occasionally Stand & Yell. The Player Lay Everything They Have On The Line For The Victory....The Should Receive The Money Taken In.(Period). But They Don't.... I Wish The Band Was 1/2 As Good As You Think They Are.... Maybe Reality Will Slap Some Of You People In The Face....

And The Fans Sit & Watch,
Hey stupid... I and three others I know go to the games not to see the ball players, but to see the band. So I think my admission should go to the band and no one else.

As for you and your mouth, feel free to kiss my happy ass!

The struggle of the football team stems from being concerned the Cheerleading squad don't get pissed off and kick th hell out of them.

NOT.....If Not For The Game You Could, I Guess Go Watch Them @ School....You Should Be Thankful The Football Team Is Their And Allows Them Some Half Time Walk Around On The Field And Play Music. They Definitely Are Not Much Of A MARCHING Band, They Are Like So Many Bands Of These Later Lazy Years Of Walking To Places And Spots Not Marching In Precision Movements At All, A Thing Of The Past @ MCHS. I Remember The #1 Step Marching To Every Position And Spot On The Field By Everyone To Include The Drum Section. THANK YOU FOOTBALL For Providing A Stage For The Band To Preform On....GO INDIANS SCALP BOONE COUNTY FRIDAY NIGHT..........
PLEASE, PLEASE Have The Choir Sing The National Anthem... They Perform With Beauty Harmony & Grace.
