Hi. I've been trying for some time to build my credit. I don't have anyone to cosign for me and I've tried credit card offer after credit card offer. Does anyone know where a good place would be to start some credit? Thank you.

It's a different world now and difficult to get a credit card with no credit history. Do you have a checking and/or savings account? If so, go to your bank and ask what they have available for you.

Check out the websites of all the major banks and apply for a credit card. Have you tried all the major ones? I would think you could get one even though the interest rate will be horrible.

I started off with getting a gas charge card, and worked my way up from there. Just be careful.

Thanks for the help, Info & Julie. It just gets frustrating trying so many different ones just to get denied! I mean how are you supposed to build it if nobody will give you any credit?! Cmon? My parents what? Getting a 'loan' from them isn't gonna build my credit!

I think what 'cmon' meant, was maybe your parents could cosign for you. Maybe that isn't an option, though. I could not sign for my children, because I've had a rough time paying my own bills. But I did start out with a gas charge card. Usually a bank will not give you a loan unless you've had an account with them for years, and no overdrafts.

Whatever you do, do not get a Sears card or a credit card with an annual fee.

There are a couple of options for you. If you have some money to put in a savings account you could then do a cash secured loan using that money as collateral. Those are easy to get. Or, there are secured credit cards you can get where you deposit money to the card initially. So, essentially when you use the card you are only using the money you put in. But, if you do that and the creditor sees that you are reliable they will be more likely to move you into an unsecured card later. Either of these should help establish your credit, although both require an initial investment from you.

Similar to Julie, I started out with a department store credit card. I believe it had like 100 in credit. Start out making small purchases (less than $50) and pay it off right then at the service desk. I know it's a pain, but it works. I used mine to purchase the items I would have bought anyhow (groceries, household items, gas). Within a month my card line was increased. I applied for and then got a few more, but didn't use them very often and kept a zero balance. Within no time my credit score had jumped enough to buy a good car. Now I own my own home and have a rental property. Be patient and make sure you pay off those balances before they are due! Good luck!!

Almost all of the small loan institutions in the area will loan you money without much or any collateral. First south is one I started thru. also Heights finance in Berea.
They have HIGH interest rates because so many people default on those loans but is an easy way to get started on building credit history. After 2-3 small loans and successful payback you should be able to get a regular loan at decent interest rate.

I started a checking account with my bank when I was a freshman in high school. Now, since I've been with the bank so long and always kept a good account, I can usually walk in and get a loan with no hassle. Also when I turned 18 I applied for a 500 dollar limit credit card through discover and every month I was sure to pay it off.
That was before this horrible economy. Getting bills in your name help build credit such as cell phone, cable, electric and so on.
A guy that's on talk radio, Clark Howard, if you check out his website and search for building credit. That should give you some good info.
