Joseph A. from Teen Challenge, Sanford, Florida, January 2004 through August 2004, reports:
"Teen Challenge professes to be a Christian Program that helps with life controlling issues such as drugs and alcohol addiction. The program is allegedly a not for profit agency affiliated with the Assemblies of God Churches. In actuality, this program is a work camp that forces clients to work 8 – 10 hour days in ways that are not helpful to them and not always legal. Residents are frequently outsourced for jobs with local companies to earn money for the organization. They are often reduced, in exchange for 1 – 2 hours of Bible study, 1 hour of unprofessional counseling per week and room and board, to beggars taking up collections on street corners for profit, or setting up carwashes in department store parking lots for profit.
Sanford Teen Challenge came under legal and financial scrutiny. Despite legal, moral, ethical and financial issues, Teen Challenge quickly ushered in a new Director where it continued business-as-usual.
At best, Teen Challenge is a human-trafficking operation that takes advantage of people’s problems, holds clients captive and uses them as commodities for its own gain. It forces them to work long hours only for the monetary benefit of the program and its administrators. At its worst, it is a brainwashing cult. It complicates problems and turns out robots that have problems making educated informed decisions for themselves. Despite the statistics it spouts out, Teen Challenge has no success rate. Prison or county jails are better alternatives than places like Teen Challenge."
I went to the Teen Challenge programme in 1985 in South Wales and spent 12 months in the programme. You get some people that are not serious about changing and unless you have hit rock bottom and are at the end of youself, you will probally not complete the programme. It is for people who really want to change and to give their life over to God. Yeah its hard but if you really want to change it will be hard, i was abused as a child and did not have any idea what love was and certainlly knew what hate was and could easily hate people and didnt care if people hated me because i hated everyone. So when i first went to TC i thought they were all bonkers as i had never experinced Godly love, as in unconditional love, in a trully Godly way, so yeah it took me about 4 to 5 months to trust this people and believe me i am no idiot and i tested them all to see if they were genuine and they are genuine, so you people who critise, you have either never experinced anything like the life i did before i meet God so you have not got a clue what you are on about as you have never been changed inside and healed by the love of God so completely. I was in a mental hospital when i was 12 as i tied to chop someones head of with an axe, thats who screwed up i was due to the abuse i suffered. So dont turn round to me and say that Doctors etc can cure and heal all of those deep scars because they cannot, i know they cannot, only God can because he did it in my life. So dont come out with all the crap and critise when you have not got a clue what you are talking about. Only God can heal the deep emotional and mental scars left inside a human being who has been abused, only Jesus who is the creater can fix his created.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS IS NOT A TREATMENT FACILITY! YOU WILL NOT GET HELP FOR BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS OR ADDICTIONS BY QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS. CHILDREN DO NOT GET HELP IN TEEN CHALLENGE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF KIDS BEING ABUSED, BEATEN, STARVED AND BRAINWASHED AT TEEN CHALLENGE.

You who are slamming Teen Challenge are so misguided and so wrong! We have supported TC for many years and have gone to many of their graduations! I agree with what someone said above, alcoholics and drug addicts are not too great of an information source. Maybe they gave up. Maybe they were kicked out. But TC, which has been around since 1958, has an astonishing 95% success rate! 95%!! And yes, they do ask for donations because,#1, they are almost entirely privately funded by donations, and #2, they will NOT turn away someone who truly wants help due to their inability to pay or for being homeless. As far as the having to work bit, yes, they expect all to do their share, and pull their own weight. This teaches the addict/alcoholic that they must take care of themselves and not expect others to take care of them, and gives them a good work ethic. I am not saying that each center is perfect, and no human being is completely infallible. But before you believe the crap posted on here, do your own research and see for yourself. Attend a graduation and talk to some of the graduates. God bless TC! The world needs them more now than ever!

Cindy, did you ever find a place you felt good/comfortable with? I have a 23 year old that has agreed to go, but I don't want to put him somewhere that will do more harm than good. We are in Columbus, GA and are desperately searching for a facility that would be good for him. He is in the process of going through detox for opiate addiction.

I have to say that I have seen lives truly changed through Teen Challenge. I am a health care professional, who also happens to be a Christian.
Addiction is a very, very difficult thing to treat. Christian programs, even though you may not agree with the numbers that Teen Challenge tout, have much higher success rates than secular programs.
I sounds to me like the exposer here expected addicts, just because they had been through the program to be perfect. Well, I don't care where you go, Every addiciton program has graduates that are going to relapse. It is part of the disease. That does not mean they go back to the lives they had before. Simply that they relapsed.
I have seen many people totally changed, for the better, by Teen Challenge and programs like it.
The Troubled Teen Industry relies on anecdotes (like this one) not hard numbers for proof of legitimacy or efficacy. It is hard to trust any of these programs without real statistics and unbiased success rates.
Some of the programs will give parents monetary credit for referring new students and making public proclamations of the program's success, so their words are tainted.

Meg, I do not know which groups you are referring to, but you'd better check your facts on Teen Challenge. There is a group in this are that has a name similar to TC, but they are not associated in any way with TC, and they are a harsh, reality-check, military style group. TC believes in a much better, God-based approach and has an astonishing success rate. Look them up yourself, go visit a center, attend a graduation, see for yourself why it is the ONLY recovery program with centers in virtually every country in the world. Because it just works!

I am looking for a place for my granddaughter which she is 16 and lives in Georgia, but I keep reading bad things about every place I find and I thought this was for teens and I read someone talking about her husband being helped, I quess he could be a teen, but I am in shock at the difficulfitly in finding a good and honest and affordable place for a child in need, I have given money to people and places for 40 years and the first time I reach out for help I find such crap as all this. What a sad world we live in.
Regina Akins, the answer to the help for your granddaughter is Mercy Ministries out of Nashville Tennessee. My daughters friend from church works there. Check it out. It is a real answer! They have sister locations in other states but are based out of Nashville.

No, SHAME ON you. Someone needs to go to the POLICE and have an under cover cop, to get inside so they can see for themselves. Then SHUT these MONEY GRUBBING, and ABUSING place down. AND I MEAN NOW. I THANK GOD EVERY DAY THAT I DID NOT SEND MY DAUGHTER THERE. SHE IS SO MUCH BETTER OFF WHERE SHE IS. SO UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN THERE DON'T SAY IT'S A GOOD PLACE, BECAUSE IT IS NOT. and how do i know, I make it my business to know when it comes to be my kids.
I don't know who I feel sorrier for; you or your daughter. I pray that she is doing well. You spew so much hatred for TC based on the lies and vicious rantings posted on here, totally disregarding the posts that sing its praises. This tells me that you are only going to hear and believe what you choose to. "Don't confuse me with the facts!" And if you do "make it your business to know when it comes to your kids," how did she get so screwed up in the first place? I am not saying it is your fault, never! but take it from a Mom who like you just wants what is best for my kids, sometimes we try so hard that we can't see the forest for the trees, and close our minds (and eyes and ears) to the truth.

No, it was to make money for Teen Challenge in their worship of the almighty dollar. I was an assistant manager of a tire store in San Diego and I've been a very good salesman at Sears for nineteen months; I didn't need to be taught a work ethic. I've been sober for over three years, not through help from "God" but by using what I learned in Alcoholics Anonymous, an organization that doesn't brag about a success rate because it's not in it for the money the way this "ministry" is.
When your husband left Teen Challenge, did they ask him to turn over his first paycheck to them?
Right on. Finish the sick bastards off!

My son went through the program in2005 & I was not sure how helpful it was but now he is in trouble again & feels he needs to go back. He told me everything is there for those who really want help but if you dont work the program seriously it won't help! I would send him & pray he gets serious about change!

How very mean and bitter you are! I suspect that is the problem; people who just mean and ugly (and yet brag about "Look at me! Ain't I wonderful?" usually have a very low self-esteem and don't like themselves very much. So you got sober without God, well congratulations and whoopie scooby do for you. Many people are not as strong and as perfect as you are. That's why Teen Challenge is there. I sincerely hope that you are not confusing the REAL Teen Challenge with the Youth Challenge Academy that is based on military-style training and discipline. Because although they have similar names, they are as different as night and day. Yet people are often confusing the two. In any case, you need to check yourself and see why you have such a cold-blooded hatred for a world-wide organization that has proven time and again that their way just works. Maybe it is just God that you hate? So one TC center was "bad" in your opinion. Out of how many hundreds of centers? If one is bad or corrupt, by all means, close it down! But don't set out on a vendetta to close all of them,(which you will never ever be able to do, especially since there are millions of us who will fight for it!) Because like it or not, there are people out there who are NOT sober yet, and who DO need God, and who WILL get sober through Teen Challenge. And for every person that GOD and TC saves, I say HALLELUJAH, THANK YOU JESUS! GOD bless TC forever!

I will be praying very hard for both of you. I wish I had known about TC back when I was a teenager. I am a recovering meth addict with many years clean, thanks be to God and Jesus! My older brother struggled with heroin addiction for many years before finally getting sober. But by then it was too late for him and he had destroyed his liver. He died a long, sick, suffering, slow death. We tried to get him on the liver transplant list, but the doctors told him point-blank, though as kindly as possible, "You are a recovering heroin addict and considered too high of a risk. They are not going to 'waste' a liver on you." And so we did the best we could for him while he slowly and painfully wasted away. Please don't give up on your children. I am not saying to be an enabler, God forbid! That's the worst thing you could do. But fight for them, with prayer, with love, even with "tough love" if necessary. And as I said I will be praying for you all as well.(((hugs)))

I'm a Victory House Teen Challenge graduate. I was at Teen Challenge for 14 months and it changed my life. Before Teen Challenge I was a drug addict, acoholic, self center, depressed, suicidal, satanist. I was constantly making bad decisions. By 17 years old I had overdosed multiple times and was always putting myself in dangerous situations. My parents decided that I need help that they couldn't provide for me so they sent me to Victory House. The Lord changed my life in Teen Challenge, He heeled my hurts and restored my family. I have been clean for almost 20 months now and I am happier now then I ever was. God brought took me out of hell itself and have me purpose. I currently am engaged to get marry, taking Bible course, lined up to take a youth Pastoring position, and just completed a 3 month internship at Victory House. If it was for Teen Challenge and the staff at Victory House I would still be stuck in the chains of addiction, if I was even still living. God saved and changed my life through Cictory House and I am so grateful for the Teen Challenge program and anyone who says that it doesn't work is wrong. If you or your kids didn't get the results from Teen Challenge that they hoped for then I'm sorry but it wasn't the program it was the person. You get out of Teen Challenge exactly what you put into. If you choose not to put your whole heart into then you won't get the life changing miracle your looking for. In order to get the change you have to be willing to walk through the fire and trust that God will get you through it. Teen Challenge hurts, but the change that happens is worth it, my life was changed, my heart was heeled, and my life was restored, and God is doing amazon things in my life all because of the change that Victory House Teen Challenge brought to my life

Joe Hans at the Teen Challenge Magnolia TX needs to be OUT! He is a controlling, sadistic man who enjoys having power under those he is in charge of and doesn't even care that he is being emotionally abusive to his victims. Stay away from any facility with this man in it!

If this man is truly like this, you and the others must report him to the main T.C. headquarters right away. One bad T.C. leader can not only damage the reputation of T.C., but even worse, can damage the very people that he is supposed to be helping!! Please keep us informed and let us know what happens.
