Must have been in the '70s and my dad owned a service station here in Phelps Kentucky. After hours he built race engines for the locals.
His best customer, Larry "Hoss" Wolford, owned a '67 or '68 blue Camaro that he raced at Richlands many times. I was somewhere between 7-11 years old and would always look forward to making the trip with them. Now they didn't look forward to my tagging along. As many of you might remember there was a law against four passengers in a pickup during those days. Maybe not a law but nevertheless it was thought to be a no no. So my answer to that when I was the fourth one wanting to make the trip was to ride in the floor of the Ford tow truck on a very hot rubber mat.
Now my father and the guys thought this would be a one time deal and I would give up. Not at all. Don't remember how many times I rode the floor but it was at least 4-5 times before my mother encouraged, told, my dad to start driving a second truck.
Now to the point. This guy, Clyde Horn, the owner of the Alley Cat seemed to be the guy to beat and more often than not we returned home disappointed at the hands of the Cat.
I would enjoy hering more about this car and the owner. Is he still alive? Does anyone know the history of this car and its current state? As a kid I hated this car and its owner but as an adult I have a huge admiration and respect for both.
If you can enlighten me it will be appreciated.
I think I know "HOSS",I use to sell him & the coal company alot of Ford vehicles.I used to race a new 69 Cobra-Jet Mustang when I was 16 there,Cldye or C.j. as his friends know him, taught me how to drag race & I won Super Stock Class a few times when C.J.wasn't running.Harold Altizer won the Stock Class every week for years in a 1968 Cobra Jet Mustang that. Clyde had several burgundy "alley cat" Vettes & drives a new 2012 burgundy conv.VETTE today. He's got some health problems, but still got his great personality.

I remember being in Bane's Bottom when the River Rat ran off the end of the track and jumped off of the mountain and landed in Bane's Bottom.

It was something to see. I heard it, and turned around to see the car launch off of the track, clearing the trees on the ridge and then tumbling through the air to land all the way across Indian Creek.

Poor guy...it was a horrible accident.
I lived in Banes Bottom at the time that happened. I was only a child then but can remember seeing that car coming down. It looked like a helicopter crashing. My dad & brother were a couple of the first people to get to him. Even though my dad had been in law enforcement in previous years & seen hideous things - that was probably the most emotionally devastating for him. He had nightmares about it for months. It was a real tragedy!!

they wont reopen it because Nick Presely would win a race blindfolded, pulling the car barefooted with only one arm and a logging chain

I was just laying here talking to my wife about my old days running around Richlands. So thought I would type in Alley Cat on google and see what I could find. This is where it landed me. I remember the purple with checkered top 02 Lavenders drove. Remember right where the shop was. I am proud to say Clyde Horn is my uncle. I will ask my mom to look up some ole pictures of the Vette. Clyde was married to my aunt Geraldine. She had her fancy white Cadillac Eldorado Clyde had his red/white Cadillac. I was the nephew from Nashville Tenn. I remember going up in the press box just like I owned it. I remember watching the vw races and the car going over the end of the mountain. I always said if I hit it rich I would go back and buy that mountain and reopen all the tracks up there. The last time I was up there at the tracks was in 1987. Someone turned me in for trespassing but the law came I acted dumb and mentioned Clyde name told them who I was they let me go.

I heard Clyde owned and raced several models of corvettes and they were all called Alley Cat.

Clyde only had the one Alley Cat it was a 1963 Corvette Stingray burgandy in color with Sylvester and Tweety bird on it. I remember it well. I am his nephew from Nashville Tenn. I use to stay with him and his first wife Geraldine. She was my moms sister. But always loved Clyde. He had a favorite motto Walk slow and drink Plenty of cool water.

You are very welcome. I have a lot of great memories of the old dirt track where my uncle Gary used to race. I would love to see any old photos that you may have. You can e-mail them to me at tomsandy0825@yahoo.com. Take care.

That was a great family track I raced my first drag car in the early 90s (A Gremlin) no where near the fastest (6.30s) but still
a thrill for a first car. Norma had us show our rides inside the Claypool Hill
mall once to promote the track. Would drive from Wise there when
we could have raced at closer tracks. Loved the uphill shutdown with drum brakes. There was a guy there taking pics about the 60 ft lights a lot would love to see those. I saw a few really high dollar cars travel there just to have the local boys put them on the trailer in the first couple of rounds. Was a great time miss it badley. Just good folks having a good time.

there are a handfull of racers that still race that raced at the dragway. One or two has went on to accomplish good things at racing. Ive never raced myself but I used to go and watch and still go to bristol or farmington. I know there are the Streets that race and the whiteds. There is one guy (dont know name) that you almost always see from this area that drives a dark colored vega. You see him win about everywhere he goes.

Cedar Hills brings back many great memorys for me.

Sounds like the Kinzer family from Pikeville/Prestonburg. They have the money to do it. Same family that bought the Coeburn Circle track.
