http://ran.org/act/sootpollution/... Soot is one of the most dangerous types of air pollution dumped into our atmosphere by the burning of coal for energy. Soot pollution plays a huge role in the more than 13,000 premature deaths caused by heart and respiratory diseases linked to coal-fired power plants every year. Reducing soot pollution would protect the environment, improve public health, and save billions of dollars in health care costs. Which is why the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed stronger air quality standards to control soot pollution. Urge the EPA to adopt these standards now. Predictably, the industries that dump all this soot pollution into our air are pushing back against these standards. For them, it's all about the bottom line. Their greed is unchecked even in the face of little children suffering from asthma or losing their parents to cancer caused by the pollution the coal industry is deliberately pumping into our air. Let the EPA know that Americans support the agency's efforts to protect our environment and our health. Please submit a comment in support of stronger standards to control soot pollution by the dealine this Friday, August 31. http://ran.org/act/sootpollution/...

Richmond has 1 coal fired power plant. The Commonwealth of Virginia has a total of 9. Your grammar speaks volumes about you. Not only are you a complete dumbass, you have no idea what you are talking about. See, there is a difference between rhetoric and actual fact. The fact is, the EPA cares about the health of our citizenry, and the quality of the water and air that our children have available. The EPA knows a hell of a lot more about the coal business than you do. The reason coal jobs are being lost is because the demand for coal has been down. When there is not a high demand for a product, there is no reason to bloat the supply just to avoid laying off workers. Low demand translates to lowered production. That is how coal corporations look at it. And if coal is so great for local economies, explain why coal communities in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia are the poorest and most economically depraved areas in those states? That is not a coincidence.

the EPA is nothing but a waste of taxpayers money as long as China and other third world countries continue to pollute our Earth unabated. So spew your anti pollution crap to them, you know they are listening. I don't want to hear it until the other countries of the world pitch in.The UN could do us all a favor by promoting this instead of warfare.

The EPA cares so much that it sent all the first responders into ground zero with no respirators and told them the air was safe. Now they are dying of cancer. The coal plants have scrubbers in the smoke stacks and there is NO soot escaping. They would be shut down immediately if there was. We all know they are dying to shut them down anyway. Obviously you are on the govt ticket and are a brainwashed, fluoride drinking, zanex taking shill.

Were they built in the last few days? Are they hidden? If you've been to them, can you tell me where they are? I'm legitimately curious, as a Richmonder, about these putative power plants that have been generating electricity apparently right under my nose. I'm also confused. Richmond is a city of 200,000 people on its best day. What in the world is going on downtown that they need FIVE hidden coal-fired power plants? This sounds sinister.

That's across the river! Do you know where downtown Richmond is? A power plant out by the Port is NOT "downtown". I know you're counting on everybody from Richlands to be as unenlightened as you are, but some of us have been places and seen things and aren't having any of the BS. And why do these power stations which are not in downtown anywhere change owners "because of the EPA"? Explain that to me.

It is interesting that you keep calling people dumbasses, and at the same time, you misspell every other word, use no punctuation, and your entire argument is based on childish name calling and broad assertions. The EPA has nothing to do with putting people out of work. The EPA protects people from corporate greed. The "working man" made a choice to stay in an impoverished location, obtain no additional education, and rely on coal mining to provide him a future. That is not the EPA putting people out of work, that is people limiting their employment marketability. You can continue to blame the EPA for whatever causes your angry and irrational rants, or you can take responsibility for the fact that you made the decision to rely on an outdated, toxic, and non renewable resource to provide you with a stable career. There are several different methods of providing electricity, all of which are more sustainable, and one of which creates an enormous amount of jobs right here in Tazewell County. If you have been laid off, and you sit around waiting for them to call you back to work instead of ferociously doing whatever it takes to get back up and provide a stable future for your family, then you are not a victim of anyone but yourself.

"In the town limits" is NOT "downtown". You said that there are coal-fired power plants in downtown Richmond. You said it repeatedly! Just admit that you lied about it and we'll move on. Because if you aren't lying, and you actually don't know the different between "downtown" and an industrial park fifteen miles down the river, then you're obviously too stupid to be commenting on the issue in the first place. For what it's worth to mention (not much, considering your obvious impairment), Dominion already operates nuclear ("nuk") power plants in Virginia, and has been for 40 years. They seem to be doing alright; nobody glowing and whatnot. I do apologizing for implying that travel would make you smarter. It clearly hasn't.

A Federal Appeals Court crucified the epa last week when it threw out the rediculous over-reaching regulation that was to start this coming January. Many eastern states coal-fired power plants would have closed several plants and partially closed many others, causing electricity rates to sky-rocket which is what the moron in Washington wanted. Glad to know there are still some common sense judges in this country. The epa got a taste of their own medicine, particularly when they touted "go into town and crucify the first five men you see" referring to oil companies. Down with the stinking epa and the idiot that loves to waste money on them. You guys know who I am talking about.
