It's not about any story in particular, it's just a newspaper that is based on more opinion than fact. It seems as though the focus is more gossip column inspired rather than unbiased reporting.

That's my take on it.

I looked it up online and WOW. Enrollment has declined... outrageously!

Dr. King left January of 2007.
5807 students the fall semester of 2007.
3855 students fall semester 2010.
3400 students estimated fall semester of '11.
That's not good. Not good at all. But, what's causing it?

I looked it up too, enrollment is down in all VA community colleges. As far as the money spent in the President's area, at least he spent it on something the entire campus faculty and staff uses, the conference room in Tazewell hall Dr. King received new cars every year that only he benefited from. Buildings need up keep, and it's not cheap!

Not true.According to enrollment figures for the VCC system SWCC was at the bottom of the heap meeting only 88% of full enrollment with a loss of 250 students in a calender year. It wasn't even close when viewing the sheet. Highlands and Mountain Empire have experienced growth in enrollment while being located in the same geographic area. Some programs in the healthcare fields are dangerously close to ceasing to exist due to probation with possible loss of accreditation to follow. The communications program was shutdown leaving students on their own with classes taken being almost useless outside of the communications field. Imagine how students felt when they had wasted 2 or 3 semesters and were going have to start over with much of their financial resources gone. And on top of that was the loss of the most talented instructor on campus who was quickly hired by another institution who recognized their value. Then there is the situation where you are "promoting" night classes while you are creating stumbling blocks to enrolling and instructors conducting those classes. It is an example of talking out of both sides of your mouth something that some people have become very good at. Speaking of that there are people who talk a good game who have gotten themselves promoted to positions that they are ill suited for. When you do that you can not be suprised at the results that you get. People can get on here and use talk as camouflage to the downward spiral this institution is headed down. That is what happens when certain individuals are more concerned with their careers than with the well being of students and the institution as a whole. The public should remember the names of the people that hid the facts of what is going on at SWCC and are responsible when the day comes that SWCC ceases to be an independant institution.

Dr Estepp is getting the car too.....Plus $170,000 salary plus an expense account. Plus under his direction the college is on a 4 day work week. With an enrollment of 3000 students this cannot be justified.
