When is the government going to weed out the lazy ones that keep milking welfare? I know some people actually need help, but far more have no interest in bettering themselves. Working people can't afford the rising cost of entitlement programs, especially now that Obamacare has started. I have a relative, she is 27 years old. She's had 2 jobs since she was 18 and was fired from both for not showing up to work. She has 4 illegitimate kids by 3 different men. All 3 fathers are deadbeats like her (one's now in prison for robbery, one's a dope dealer, and the last is "disabled" except when he goes deer hunting and riding 4-wheelers at Wagonwheel). I have been working for 35+ years, and Im tired of supporting deadbeats. Its time able bodied people be required to do community service for welfare and food stamps, and that women like my relative that can't afford children but keep having them at taxpayer expense be spayed. Now Ill get down off my soap box. Thank you.

Just a lil info that some may not know in order to recieve a TANF check (formerly known as welfare checks) you have to either find a job within 30 days or do 30hrs community service a week to recieve the benefits. I do agree that dead beat mothers & fathers should be forced to be "fixed" after having a certain number of kids who are solely supported by the system. The bad part is the ones who are tryin to fix their lives & make a better life for their family are the ones who get everything taken the second they get a minimum wage job but the ones who continually sit on the a$$ & do nothing get foodstamps, HUD pays their rent & gives them a utility check, & the list goes on & on of the benefits they recieve. The system is not set up to help those who want to help themselves & I'm afraid it's gonna stay this way. Something needs to be done & I think the best place to start would be random drug tests for everyone who recieves assistance already & a mandatory drug test for anyone applying for assistance. This would weed out a lot of the problem I'm sure.

The working class people have to have random drug test and if you fail it you better have a VERY good reason or else you are fired. Same with welfare everyone young middle age and old should have to have random drug test and if you fail it that should be it for your assisatnce. And these girls and women out here having 3 or 4 babies and expecting us to support them should be Mandatory sterilaztion. Welfare should be for those down on there luck and need help til they can get it together, not a life long check. I realize everyone has hard times there is no shame in getting help and I am glad to see it it given to some one that is down and out that is what it is there for.

Welfare was implemented as a needed action during the depression era. It helped save numerous people from homelessness and starvation. Its intended purpose was a very just and warranted cause for the time. However, it has become the crutch of a society that now feels the United States and those working class Americans, owes them a living and that sitting on the couch collecting a check is better than the pride of knowing you have earned everything you own. I work two jobs and in my spare time, when I can find any, I clean people’s homes. In effect that makes three jobs. I am tired, and yet I get up every day and know that what I have, I earned, and the pride of that knowledge keeps me going. I stand in the store with 5 or 10 things digging through my purse trying to find enough change to get a few groceries and I see people with 2 and 3 carts full as they pony up with the food stamp card. There is no pride in taking what you have not earned and living off the backs of your children or anyone else. The welfare system is in major need of an over haul and those of us who work for a living need to stand up, be counted and stop supporting lazy, crazy good for nothing people who are totally and completely capable of working. I have trouble supporting myself; I should not have to also support lazy people who continue to have children they cannot themselves support.

Hello clueless people.Welfare as we know it today was started in the Johnson administration. It was a way for Americans to pool their money and help the poor. When left to the churches and charitable organizations, many people were left out.
It was an embarassment to this country to be so rich a nation and have so many poor folks goin without help.Especially when we were handing out money overseas to the poor.
Now there is no shame in this country, only hard-hearted people.

Thats true, but I dont think Johnson ever intended that welfare be a permanent benefit to the same family for 45 years. I know of families that have been on it since it started, Parents, then their kids, and soon grandkids. The younger ones growing up with no ambition and thinking it's better to be taken care of than to make something of themselves. That money would do better to be spent on job skill training than just handing out a check each month.

Im not 'hard-hearted', I work for a living and think everybody else should too. I give to deserving charity but Im not going to give to sorry-a$$ people that wont work. It use to be 'you dont work, you dont eat', we need that attitude again.

I work my tail off everyday, I work 40 a week sometimes more, I don't have fancy things nor do I "go out" per say to spend any extra $. I get welfare and if it wasn't for it then my family wouldn't eat and we would starve. No we don't get much $ to help w groceries and as a matter of fact there are still times I have to choose between my high ass electric bill (like everyone else) and getting food for my children. Don't get me wrong I don't agree w people who ONLY depend on the system to survive but not everyone on benefits abuse them. I am so tired of hearing people bitch and complain about others who receive assistance. I don't work no fast food job either so before you go judging me and telling me to get a better paying job, let me just tell you that. I do have a problem with those who can't get assistance and then they start trashing the ones who do. Its not easy now days for anyone whether you get help or not and when you have people who intentionally set out to try and hurt others because of what they have or don't have that's just wrong.
That's just like I know of several families and I'm using that word because that's exactly what they are who live together, have children together and yet they aren't married just so they can abuse the welfare system. Now that's bull sh*t. If you have a child and that childs parent (both) live with it, then I think their income should be counted as one.
As I stated before I don't agree with people abusing the system but not everyone on welfare is doing that. I don't enjoy being on welfare but I will not let my children go hungary either.

Former political candidate David Duke said it best: "Whats wrong with welfare? It's working people having to buy hot dogs and baloney for supper and welfare people buying steaks..."

Ill agree on that point, I once knew a woman with 2 little kids that got all kinds of assistance like WIC and food stamps, and her live-in boyfriend's family owned a retail business and was well off at the time.

what about the families collecting stamps for their kids, and they dont have custody of them. there is quite a few of them in town. then hud pays for housing, and the person isnt living in it. her kids and their bf/gf are. these are the people that dont need help.

From what I read on both the Narrows and Pearisburg sites;most people are jealous of anyone who gets public assistance.Nobody gets much from social services.the government cut back on it so they can give more aid to banks and large companies. Then there is all the money they send overseas. Not to mention all our industry they sent to odther countries.that's why there aren't enough good jobs to go around.
Then there are the illegal aliens who get free health care.
Then the politicians have turned us all against each other,so we don't notice all these things.

They are in the process of implementing a new stage in the qualification process. Drug testing. They are coming to a realization that some people are actually selling thier stamps to get drugs.
I'm hoping that this also tests for prescription drugs , and a prescription or notes from a medical proffessional would be needed to support the use of these said prescriptions.

I am on food stamps, if it where not for them , my family wouldn't eat. Before that I had to chose between gas to get to work or diapers/food.

I am currently taking classes at new river to get a degree. I'm taking steps to improving my life for me and my two daughters. We did not ask to be in the situation we are in now. They're dumbass father put us in our situation for a younger piece .
