This was an undated aerial photo in a box of slides that I know were taken in the 1950's. if anyone thinks differently, please let me know.

Weren't the bank and the Hartley Inn restaurant there?

The bank is on the southwestern corner of the square and that's where my Grandads dental office was, on the second floor. This might have been taken on a Sunday morning.

When I grew up near there it was called the town square. I think most of the out of towners called it the circle because that's how they drove around it. Hartley Inn is still there along with the bank.

The dentist referred to previously was an extremely nice fellow. I had an appoint there after school one day. Afterwards I asked if I could call home for a ride. Since I was the last appointment of the day he instead gave me a ride home for free. You don't find much of that kindness being offered today. IIRC he was also a ham radio operator.

Yup, somewhere I've got postcards with Grandads call letters on them. He would send the postcards as a followup to contacts he made on the radio. He also built the first television in Carmichaels, it was in a square box with a round screen about the size of a basketball.

Yeah, I'm an out-of-towner...from down Rices Landing way.
Hit the Hartley Inn for more than few lunches.

Sadly, there are too many predators around now to trust those who should and were respected then.
The end of innocense.

Next to the bank (red) is the bowling alley and the theater (both owned by the Lund family), but now the banking parking lot. Moving to the left, across the street, again on the corner of the square is the former Armstrong, later Taylor, drugstore. Move around the corner to the barbershop tucked inside the corner, then the Harley Inn. Walk across the street from there, and Burger and Roth had the red building, Carmichael's own little department store. Cross the street again, and you had the Clover Farm (grocery), later Foodland (now gone). The Zalar home/barbershop was next to that....then cross the street and you are back to the bank/bowling/movies!

Grew up in Carmichaels in the fifties. Market street runs from right most corner (north to south) through the square towars the gas station (ESSO?) and the newstand was on the opposite courner. The Union Supply store was across from the gas station (use to walk and get posciles there).
