Winnebago ethanol plant fined $100,000

Owners of the ethanol plant in Winnebago have agreed to to pay a $100,000 fine and make a $50,000 contribution to benefit Rice Lake after pleading guilty in federal court Wednesday to violating the Clean Water Act.

That's silly. Having an ethanol plant pay a fine to the government would be like me borrowing myself $5. Fines paid with tax dollars. Hilarious.

No, just most of it:


Corn ethanol subsidies totaled $7.0 billion in 2006 for 4.9 billion gallons of ethanol. That's $1.45 per gallon of ethanol (and $2.21 per gal of gas replaced).
