<quoted text>You didn't just admit that the south overwhelmingly voted democratic during the worst of the segregation years, did you? You just said that in the south from the time of reconstruction through adoption of civil rights, the Republican barely even existed.Doesn't that support my argument, and not yours?
The parties are the same today in name only, they have evolved much in the last 150 years.

Agreed. Democrats used to love America. Now they go out of their way to destroy it.

Too funny!
Thanks, but I'm not sure that I'm quite omniscient yet, but I'm working on it. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Obviously, racists went with any party where they could ply their *trade* of hatred, be it democrat or republican at the time. If the democrats of today were the party looking take away people's rights, racists would be right in there with them just like they are with the teaparty republicans. Only a simpleton would think that either party has been unwavering in their platforms from decade to decade. Could you imagine, for example, the republicans of the 1860's freeing slaves and the republicans of the 1960's fighting against Civil Rights? Rather incongruous.
It is interesting to note how different both the republican and democratic parties are today, compared to the 1860’s. It is to be expected that political parties evolve and change over the generations, but with both parties it seems as if they’ve flipped-flopped.

The *liberal* element of the Republican Party consisted of abolitionists which wanted to end slavery everywhere. The moderate republicans like Lincoln were ok with allowing slavery to continue to exist in the southern States just as long as it didn’t extended into the new territories west of the Mississippi River. The southern democrats wanted to maintain the traditional business and land-use practices which included slavery. They desired this because it made good economic sense. It was good for business as slave labor makes for big profits.

The republicans had a *liberal* social proposal of giving land to the people, and of course opposed by *conservative* democrats who preferred that the land would have to be purchased. The 1856 Republican candidate for president, John C. Fremont, an abolitionist, ran with the slogan “Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Speech, Free Men, Fremont”

And it was the driving force by the republican party, behind the passage of the 14th and 15th amendments which resulted in making into constitutional law the *liberal* social causes of granting citizenship and the right to vote to newly freed slaves.

It was kinda weird seeing *liberal* preface republican and *conservative* preface democrat.

Yes, however some dynamics changed and some varied. Our nations ideas about wealth have changed. The old Republicans were the richer party of the day, and yet the more liberal one. They saw themselves as being in a position to push social causes. Likewise, some members of the Democrat party have been members of the KKK. They were once the Conservative party and saw fighing for the common man as a Conservative value. Then there was the American Communist Party. When it disbanded, the members had no place to go, so they infiltrated the Democrat party, running the Conservatives to the more conservative of the 2 liberal parties. Of course, some of the "Blue Dogs" remained in the Democrat party. Most of those are elderly now.

I might not be right, but this was how it was explained to me.
