Sound Off (Aug. 2)

Full story: Las Cruces Sun-News

If Bill Richardson pardons the cop killer, Billy the Kid, he will cement his inappropriate tenure as New Mexico governor, along with his driver's license for illegal immigrants and buying a jet with New Mexicans' money to run for president and fail.

And just think, it takes about 7,000 to 10,000 gallons of potable water for each golf game. Well over 7 acre feet of water for each acre of golf grass. Farmers, who grow our food and fiber are only given three acre feet (in a good year, and those are far and few between in this drought) to grow crops that we all need.
Learn to harvest the divots... plentiful and easy to raise. Every tried one? Delicious.

Ben Rios has been trying to get Billy the Kid pardoned for a decade. He tried the same thing with Gary Johnson in 2001. Johnson considered it, and refused. I'm sure Bill Richardson will do the same.
Don't bet on it -- Richardson is nearly as smart as Johnson was.

I wonder what you'd be saying about Governor Richardson if HE advocated legalizing drugs, as Johnson did.

I would think he was amazing. I loved Johnson for that. Took guts. It's about time we legalized drugs and taxed them. The only drug I would outlaw is Narcan. If they OD, too bad.

You're right, everyone knows that Fox News and conservative bloggers are a bunch of liars. The facts should be checked on everything these guys say. They should all resign, like Dan Rather did when he reported about memos regarding GWB national guard service without checking their authenticity. But O'Reilly and Hannity won't resign because they're not real journalists, they're just gossip-mongers.
I won't argue with you about O'Reilly and Hannity not being real journalists. That's why I have to laugh at you Libs for becoming so upset at these guys. You should learn to choose your battles a lot better.

But the rest of us pick up the tab for the druggies' health care when they do OD.

The Chamber of Commerce is a Republican organization, period. They are opposed to any pro-environmental issue because they believe these issues take money from the pockets of the Republicans.

"I lived in Virginia for a couple of years before I moved here, and don't be surprised at anything these Confederate supporters do. In my son's history books they had it almost sounding like the South won. They want to try and convince people that the South was right."
If you're a modern 'confederate supporter' your a whacko. I'll defend your freedom of speech, but you're a whacko. By the way, the South WAS right about the issue of state's rights - but clinging to slavery was a rather dumb coffin-nail. They could have had everything they wanted if they would have freed the slaves and started employing them as equals.... instead a strong federal government won and now we're all enslaved.
Thanks Jefferson Davis et al. Jerk. We could have remained AMERICA but you just had to feel superior to brown people, didn't you?
Your fourth paragraph is intriguing. I am not the believer in states rights that you are, so i do not agree that the South was right. But your idea that the South could have everything if only it had freed the slaves and employed them as equals is intriguing, though, still doubtful. Racism was a huge factor in the secession, and it explains why states with little slavery still supported succession. And equal pay for blacks would probably have been ruinous to an already shaky cotton economy. But I am open to evidence on both points to the contrary.

To the person on July 29 SoundOff, just what jobs do you think will be freed up by the "illegals" as you call them? The dish-washing jobs, hotel room cleaning jobs, janitorial jobs, the jobs most of us "Legals" don't want to take because they are beneath us and only pay minimum wage?
How about the construction industry? Construction used to be a good job to hold. Now it has been taken over by illegal people who will do the job for pennies. All those good American jobs are gone to illegal persons.
If you are right--and I think you are wrong--how about getting upset with the employers who hire illegals (how , may I ask, do you know that they are illegal or getting paid pennies?) and pay them pennies, when they should be paying everyone the going rate. My guess is that you have made this entire point up to serve your political point about "illegal" immigrants.

Hi Dr. Hays, the claim made doesn't apply to all GCs; however, there are many here in the borderland that hire "illegal immigrants" and even US citizens wanting to remain off the radar (ie behind & sought by Child Support Enforcement, by the IRS, etc). What they do is pay them under the table to avoid paying FED & STATE taxes, EDD, Unemployment & Workman's Comp insurances, etc). These people that work under these conditions are indeed being paid less than legally employed counterparts because these unethical employers claim that they pulled the deductions that need to be paid, and oftentimes the "illegal immigrants" don't realize that the employer isn't paying squat. They're just pocketing the money. As for the citizens wanting to be paid under the table, they're screwing themselves over too because if they get hurt on the job or become unemployed, they have no recourse to prove they were employed (no check stubs, no paid coverage, etc). Granted, they can pursue litigation but it isn't cheap.

It's appalling to know that many people do hire under these conditions, with no regard for the children being effected by these deadbeat parents that they enable. I use to have people approach me seeking employment wanting to negotiate those types of conditions that they were use to with their previous employers. I'd tell them to take a hike & that it's illegal.
