We're in the Deming/Columbus area. I must have pushed a wrong button somewhere that inserted AZ as our state.

Well, I'm not! And I don't appreciate the insult!

We live in the United States of America and if you wish to communicate something for everyone - do it in English!! Otherwise keep your mouth shut or learn the language!

I apologize, but your comment seemed a little cocky, this lady is in Mexico, maybe she does not write english give her a break. She was commenting how good the band is.

Let me translate so y'all won't feel so offended/defensive. Here goes:

"You (plural) are a mariachi (no direct translation) of excellent quality, you do everything in a coordinating manner, the only thing you need is to add a spark of joy to your events, make your spectators dance, try to sing songs that are more popular and more lively.

During the visit (presentation) you had at the 15th International Mariachi and Charrerria Meeting (Conference?) you pleased the public. I hope you return soon. I love you very much. Guadalajara awaits you...

I apologize if I sounded a 'little cocky'. I work in retail here in Deming. It's bad enough that in order to do my job I am being forced to learn to speak spanish because so many of my customers WON'T (notice I didn't say 'can't') speak english - but my spanish speaking co-workers are constantly speaking among themselves in spanish - then expecting me to know what they are talking about. And every one of them are U.S. citizens and speaks perfect english and knows that I feel insulted by their actions.

I am getting very tired of being made to feel as though I am a 'foreigner' in my own country!!!!

I hear you. Sorry you're upset and feel like a foreigner...some people are disrespectful like that. It's wrong. But not everyone does it intentionally. Even though I learned Spanish as a first language, and am fluent in it, English comes more naturally to me. It's easier for me. Sometimes I've offended some of my older family members by speaking English to my children or spouse. They are of the mind that if I know they don't speak English, I should speak the language that everyone understands. And I say, if I am speaking something to you, I will switch to Spanish so that you understand. Is that rude? I certainly don't mean to be rude to them, but I guess I can see how not understanding what I'm saying might make them upset. Still, that's different cause it's a family situation. Business is different.

You know what's funny? Sometimes I walk into a business and I'm spoken to in Spanish! And even though I understand what they're saying, and I can respond in Spanish, I choose to speak English. I don't like for people to assume one is a Spanish-only speaker just cause of the color of one's skin. I have no problem speaking either language. I speak a few more languages, they interest me. I strongly believe, however, that business should be conducted primarily in the official language of our country.

Because we don't walk into Chinese reastaurants having to know basic Chinese in order to order. They may speak broken English in some establishments, but the attempt is being made.

Anyway, I don't think you sounded cocky just frustrated. Understandably so.

I strongly believe that I am An american citizen, brave and free, and if I choose to speak spanish wherever I am, that is my right,do I speak english when I need to? Yes I do, Does this make make a law breaker, I do not thihk so, here in Arizona there are many navaho indians, they speak their own language, right? I wish I could speak navaho, does it bother me when they speak navaho around me, well yes, but i should learn to live with it, and they talk about you and laugh and they make comments among themselves and they laugh should we ban all languages, just because of this, you tell me.
