My greatest wish is to physically force the "careless fools" that caused this....into the muck for a week.....

It may take the US Coast Gard a long time to respond to many sitations do to lack of moral in the goverment branch's these days. These men and women are treated like scum from their athorities and rarely get to go home at night. They are forced to stay two to three days in a row with only 4-5 hours of sleep. This is not an excuse for the untimely matter at hand, there should be no reason as to why the oil has escaped beyond the Golden Gate. I feel that know one can provide an excuse for such a desaster. But people must keep in mind that the poeple who protect and serve this country are under payed janitors and nurse's.

It STILL isn't clear! Today SFGate stated that a bar pilot didn't board the vessel until AFTER it hit the bridge.

All they said was that the bar pilot saw bunker fuel "gushing" out of the side of the ship while he was boarding.

So whats the deal? Why didn't a bar pilot board the ship outside the GG Bridge and bring the ship safely into port.

All the articles keep glossing over this little detail.

Yeah, I know what you are saying. And the first night I heard of this, was at night, on the news, and the news reported that a cargo ship had hit the Bay Bridge, but did not cause any damage. I went to bed thinking, "cool, no damage to the bridge" but then I woke up to discover that there was thousands of gallons spilled into the bay and washing up onto beaches.

Human error? Duh! No fooling.
What should have been done immediately simply was not done. What an awful mess this has created for the wildlife, and shoreline along the coast, in addtion to the oil that's gone out into the ocean. I would think those huge tankers would have had better systems to guide them in the fog, assuming it was foggy...
The whole incident should not have happened, if the crews responsible were doing their jobs, & the clean-up should have started immediately. It makes me sick to hear that so many birds have died & that it's affected the big harbor seals in San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf.

It wasn't a tanker, it was a container ship. We were discussing on a similar forum whether container ships are allowed to come into the Bay without bar pilots on them.

I would think...at least I would HOPE.... that bar pilots are required to bring in oil tankers at least.

Never seen a maritime law book but I would imagine it's a rather hefty item...lol.

According the the news on TV, the Capt has had many violations, one just last year for running the ship a ground. How many times must a Capt be sited until he is fired?

oh excuse me.. cargo ship. Sorry for the slip up.
But whatever the kind of ship it is, it's made a horrific mess that should have never happened had the people responsible been doing their jobs & paying attention to where they were in relation to the bridge in the first place...and the time wasted afterwards before any clean up was begun it just appalling.

Yep... they finally identified Cotas as the bar pilot rather than the captain of the container ship.

And they also mention four violations is 14 years.

So sad & tragic. As we politicize the very substance of our existence, i.e. the environment, we condemn ourselves to live with increasing levels of mismanagement, corruption, & blatant destruction. Our insanity can be seen in the messages we send daily of humankinds challenge and struggle to be its sisters and brothers keepers in mass and/or effective numbers. Though many are devoted to best quality of life for ALL inhabitants of this planet, we are still subjected to mind-boggling, high-level incompetence and negligent such as this. My constant prayer is mindfulness that ushers in peace, love, and respect for all involved. Everything that is beneficial for all will follow.
