Karen - maybe that was enlightenments point! the former "interim" fire chief wouldn't go to a fire two blocks away just because it involved DOING SOMETHING. The fire at 14th street last week wasn't in the city either, but the new chief went without being asked.......hhhmmm i wonder why? what separates the two chiefs?
Well, LOL the problem is you can't just have anyone that wants to respond to an incident. There are reasons some are dispatched and some are not. If everyone that "thought" they had a duty showed up at every call who would be left to cover the next call that came in?

And you know the new chief wasn't asked to respond how? Not everything goes over your public scanner so you can't always assume you know everything just because you might have heard something.

Before you go around knocking someone for the job you THINK they should be doing perhaps it would be best to find out what the job is SUPPOSED to be.

No one in the fire service, police service or any 9 to 5 job can be asked to work 24/7. Everyone deserves a day off.

Kanren and Just a Thought - that is if you are two different people. It's not uncommon in the fire service to assist in another agency's incident without committing yourself to the incident. I should say its common to those who understand the brotherly nature of the fire service. Some, like the new Chief, seem to get that. It is a matter of courtesy. I would be very surprised if a Cal-Fire chief, or any employee, that lived within the city of oroville, didnt respond to a fire a few doors down, just to offer assistance.

I do know that the new Chief wasn't asked to respond, because I asked him. He said no. Maybe he just understands what the job is SUPPOSED to be, better. Its supposed be a lot more that what those OFD employees have been getting for the last 10 years.....

Well LOL the funny thing is if the fire had been just a few doors down I'm sure any fireman would head down to the scene. However, the fire on 14th was more than "a few doors down" from Tehama. That is if you know Thermalito at all.

And just being on scene at an incident and lending a hand are very different things. Anyone trained or not can be at the scene of an incident, but unless you are needed too many personnel can be more trouble than help.

It's funny how all of a sudden we want everyone with a "duty" to respond to an incident. When just a few weeks ago there were plenty of posts about how overpaid firemen were to sit around. Now we want to pay them to respond to incidents that they aren't originally dispatched too. Unless of course you think they should just be donating their time at these other calls?

If that is the case I hope that you donate plenty of your own time free of charge at your job.

Karen and Just a Thought,

I second LOL, if you had any idea about the fire service you would not be spewing the garbage that is exiting your mouth.

The POINT and I emphasize the POINT, is that the past interim Fire Chief/Battalion Chief did not find it relevant to respond to a fire that was close to his residence (several years ago) or even in the City when he was in charge of the department (ie: Tong Fong Fire). He only responded after being paged 2-3 times. However, 9/10 individuals who work in the fire service would respond and possibly render aid regardless of compensation. The Chief is question, due to laziness and complete incompetence would not. He did not care that a fire was a few blocks away! However, in retrospect and to validate your point HE probably would have been more of a hinderance. Therefore, if you would like to revamp your statement and say that he didn't respond because he is borderline retarted, I would buy into that, but not the other points you have.

If you want an education then look up the Grand Jury report from 2006 RE: City of Oroville Fire Department.

Addtionally, across this county there are dozens of interactions between different jurisdictional Chiefs when they are in a neighbor's jurisdiction, ie: Chico FD, Butte County FD, Paradise FD, Oroville FD, El Medio FD, USFS, Cal-Fire, Hamilton City FD, Mooretown Rancheria FD, need I go on.

Karen, if you want to hold on to your prehistoric, dog-pissing match of this is my territory not yours, then I suggest you move or you may witness what happened in Contra Costa County two years ago because of a agency issues. Or maybe you want to go back east where a house fire can be one house on the other side of a jurisdiction and the neighboring fire department won't respond and will sit there and watch it.

Finally, Just a Thoughtless, every firefighter knows what they are supposed to do, but every true blooded firefighter knows what they have to do when an emergency pops right up in front of them or near by. Chief Hurley, probably due to his predecessors, is learning the job by himself. His training, education and expierence are outstanding but that won't help with the reigns being handed to him without any VALUABLE guidance! I truly believe that Chief Hurley is working as hard as he can to make his residence in the City of Oroville. Additionally, to answer another one of your points, YOU ARE COVERED OFF DUTY if you are engaged in the work that you are employed as, ie Fire Fighter. To answer your retarted analogy about our brethren in public service, why do cops take they cars home if they live outside the City or why do they carry there sidearm when they are off duty? They have a sworn DUTY TO ACT!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and another thing smart people, there is a little item in the Fire Service called AGENCY REPRESENTATIVE (agency rep), that will usually accompany their respective resources if they are committed to a large scale incident, for example, the fire on 14th. Street.

Now that I have got what I wanted out of both of you lets play a little game and step out from behind our nicks and tell people who we really are. This way we will understand how it is you both know where both chiefs were at any given moment and why they did or didn't respond to calls.

I have no problem telling you who I am. There is no love lost between Les Bowers and I, but I do know he's a good fireman. Since I am his ex.

Now show us just exactly who you are and we will know why you have such hate or jealousy for someone. I am gonna bet you won't do this cause people who are always spewing hate never have the balls to do it unless they can hid behind something like a nick name.

I just picked up on this conversation, and no where did I see where any of the prior comments said Bowers is a bad fireman, just a bad chief. The whole conversation is about Chiefs, new and old. And who are you to call someone out, and who are you to tell someone that they are hateful or are filled with jealousy. Maybe the people wont reveal their names because they work in that department. A department and a City that is notorious for going after those who challenge the City and their ways.

Well you do know that Les didn't ask to become Chief, if he had I would say he asked for what he got but since that isn't the case then cut him some slack.

I am calling them out cause if they do work for the department then that might explain why they have an axe to grind.

Your comment "He without sin cast the first stone!" should go both ways right..so maybe we need to know if the people talking are without sin...

WELLL look out the first of the month is around the corner.... Hope he is enjoying O town and all we have to offer. I think he is getting settled and he seems to be responding to calls and learning the area. You must remember moving to a new area is not easy. Oh and his time off is his time off.
