Those apartments are in really sad shape and i feel for all of the residents who lost thier home but I hope that Judge Rebecca Baker and her husband, the slumloards who owned the apartment complex are sued for all they are worth!

It's so terrible when people are lost to fire, especially little children and it could of been prevented if the owner would of fixed the building's boiler so those innocent people could properly heat their homes! I hope everyone else that lived there can find a place to stay before Christmas. So sad.

The children and their grandmother. The mother isn't expected to make it. Joe Abraham is the owner and yes it is a slum building. I used to live in it and some of my family were living in it when it burned early this morning.

To those of you who want to blame the owner you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about and you should be ashamed of yourselves. The owner Joe Abraham lived in that building himself weekdays so that he was always available for his tenants. How many true "slumlords" can say that. The building wasn't perfect by any means but it was home for 30 some people who otherwise might not have a home at all. The heating system was working fine and Mr. Abraham made many improvements including adding balconies so that people would have a place to enjoy the summer outside.

Unfortunately tragedies like this bring out the best and the worst in our human nature. Which of those attributes describes you? If you want to blame Mr. Abraham then I assume you are willing to provide a home for someone who lived at the old Curlew School.

Thank you also to the Border Patrol Agent that was also there from the beginning, helping people get out of the burning building. There were truly many angels that day. God Bless you all

Well, Republicguy, you're obviously a fan of Joe's. I guess everybody needs a friend, even slumlords. Lets not forget that Superior Court Judge Rebecca Baker also owns that building. Her name is on it, too. Rebecca and Joe... quite the pair. And as for your last sentence of providing a home for these unfortunate people... if Joe and Rebecca had provided a safe living environment for these families most likely this tragedy never would have happened. Joe may have provided balconies but only because there wasn't proper ventilation in the building and it would get stifling inside. And if the building was taken care of so well then why did tenants feel the need to have to heat their little apartments with their KITCHEN STOVE!?!?!?! Doesn't sound like it was quite up to snuff, was it? Prayers to the families and for their terrible loss.

I heard on Colville radio that there has been a lot of clothing donations, which are appreciated, but now they're asking for stuff like household items and bedding. They said people could also donate financially to the Red Cross to help these people out. Heart breaking and unfortunate, especially before Christmas.

Financial help can be sent to the Curlew Community Church earmarked for the victims. This is a very generous community with so many donations in the first few hours yesterday morning.

I heard people were heating their homes with their ovens. How is that taking care of his tenants? It's so sad to know this could of been prevented.

No, Joe never LIVED in that building and for shame that you would say that! Joe has never once cared for his tenants and is a bastard slumlord that should burn in hell.
Joe spends his time in a very nice home, only one of three that he and Rebecca own. Before the jerk above makes you think otherwise, check his property records for Ferry and Stevens county, as well as Belize. Dumb ass people should not be allowed to repopulate.
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Yes, Joe and Rebecca have a modest old home in Republic and another very modest old home in Colville where Rebecca works. They have never owned any property in Belize. Joe lived at the old school weekdays and anyone who knows anything about the situation knows that to be a fact. The RUMORS being circulated about inadequate heat in the building are not true. There were no code violations and you can check with local authorities on that. The fire investigator from Spokane stated that the oven was not on but that two of the burners on top were. On the right front burner was the remains of a skillet and on the left side there was a broiler pan with charred debris.

The lynch mob mentality that is surrounding this tragedy is despicable. Why it is that you want so desperately to have someone to blame and hate is a mystery to me. My suggestion is that you wait for the official findings by authorities and stop the vicious rumors. They do not reflect well on you personally or on our community.

I've rented a house from Joe Abraham about 10 years ago and he was a good landlord from day one. He was always there when something went wrong. And I worked with him, he was a good contracter. So quite putting the blame on him until you find out the facts.

Sabrina you are absolutely wrong. Like many people here you simply don't know what you're talking about. Joe lived in a small room above his office. I know that to be a fact because I went there two or three times a week from Republic, for the past 7 or 8 years. Why do people insist on making fools of themselves by making untrue comments about things they don't know about?

Merry Christmas and best wishes to all of the victims of this tragedy.

republicguy- You are truly out of your mind. Joe has never lived above his office in that room. God only knows what he did up there, but he certainly didn't sleep there.

His homes are certainly not slums and Rebecca certainly does live in the Republic home unless she is sitting on the bench in Stevens County.

You must be one of his incompetent crew, to have the need to be in his presence two or three times a week. Let me guess, you are the little squirrel who can't figure out how to stand on a ladder?

As far as what happened, the Spokane Fire Chief has not released the cause of the fire, but you keep spouting off about what you don't know! That will work.

You keep kissing Joe's butt. Apparently, you have been doing just that for 7-8 years. Perhaps some personal guilt there, Buddy?

Happy Hannuaka.
