If they suddenly morph into a newspaper that does more than print coupons and dispense DNC talking points, I might consider renewing my subscription. Otherwise. The H-C is the propaganda organ of the Chamber of Commerce and it protects the Chamber from any perception that they could be doing counter productive economic development projects.

I have found that most local papers are not really worth the paper they are printed on.

Nano,
Why is that? Could it be that the folks putting out the paper have limited vision? Maybe they have exceeded their creative abilities, and capacity to contribute to the community?
Later..lawman/too many "smiths" on here.
Have fun at the Poke Salad Festival.

Lawman...two things...
First the weed is called poke SALLETT!! LOL..it is similar to other greens that grow wild.
Second..about the local papers...my best guess is that the problem is not as simple as lacking things.
I am aware that the JC Sentinal is published out of Livingston, in another county. They have no local competition, so they can pretty much charge whatever they want for advertising.
The staff that they have is also very limited, and not very well paid.
The JC Sentinal makes its money from advertising and not circulation.
Of course, my guess is that if they increased the news coverage, they would increase circulation.
Then again, since it is only published once a week, most people get their news on the street or from the scanners.

I work for a local newspaper that's family owned. We're an afternoon paper and when we publish each day, folks are lined up around the block to get one. Most local papers are owned by larger companies and are simply being over managed and under funded. That's why they suck. I worked for a local paper before this one where the head office was 400 miles away and they totally managed us from that far away and cut our budgets to nothing. People constantly called me at work to tell me we sucked and I couldn't argue with them and I didn't. They were right, we sucked. I'll never write for a corporate paper again.

Just my two cents.

I believe in locally owned and operated businesses. I also believe that a newspaper should be in business to report to the public about what is going on in their community as it is to sell advertising.

Unfortunately, our local paper does not report local news, at least not to the extent that they could.

Barbie, you've drunk the Kool-Aid, now, haven't you?

Take this UCDD uproar, for example. Had you only read the H-C you would have thought there was a little bit wrong with the way it was run, but no big deal. You never would have heard about Wendy's nearly free gazebo she practically stole from the taxpayers.

The only reason things blew up like they did was NewsChannel5's Phil Williams and, of course, the Topix warriors.

Do you remember when that lady Hopson was publishing Putnam County history books and got busted for securities fraud and running a ponzi scheme? A prominent local reporter wrote a sympathetic story because she had been a friend with her in the past, and it enraged one of Hopson's victims so badly her house got shot up.

The "news story" went so far as to offer information about how readers could help with Hopson's "mounting legal problems," and of course, no concern at all for her victims.

Final note -- as lame as the H-C is, it must be admitted that they're astronomically better than that old Dogpatch or whatever it used to be called.

Final note #2 -- Why did you drag up this nearly five-year-old thread anyhow?
