Who is running against richard hill for Sheriff? I certainly hope some one does. Stone County needs some NEW BLOOD so to speak. I know several deputies that work there, and they too want a change, Stone County needs someone from outside the GOOD OLE BOY organization. I heard the chief deputy quirk?(i think that is his name) had a person fired for asking for help (for a personal handicap that they knew about) and he (chief deputy) is medically disabled from Nixa. Go figure! I think the sheriff is retired from CA for the same thing! Wow, talk about cripples not helping each other! The person they canned had a lot of experience and I was told he was a good employee, very professional and a friendly individual. I spoke to a person at the clerk’s office, and they cannot keep up with processing the termination papers! He recently purchased eleven NEW cars, and gave a FEW deputies raises….a few…….yea that is right! No staff I mean non-deputies got raises, and not all deputies got one either! Hey, I know, quit buying cars, and you can afford to pay your employees! Oh well, just wondering.

I have herd a guy that has more experience, and integrity than hill is. No one will say who yet. The information about the employee fired is unfortunately true. The employee was fired after he asked to be excused from a transport duty because of his disability. There was a lot about it on another web page. It appears that he filed a complaint with EEOC, and they found that he was discriminated against for his disability. As far as the raises and cars, not sure, but the budget is public record. I may need to check that out.

It is true that only a few of his staff got raises, 8 I think, to include the sheriff and the two lieutents, now promoted to Captain. He gave the two new captains approximately 8 thousand dollar a year raises each. The janitorial staff were among the others that got raises. The chief deputy is medically retired but from the Springfield Police Deparment. The individual that was fired did inform the chief deputy and wrote a memo to the chief deputy and sheriff stating that his disability was aggrevated by doing the transports. The sheriff's department also breaks the judges order when the judge sentences people. The judge orders that inmates be transported by two deputies and the sheriff's routinely uses one deputy. The person in question was a bailiff and after being fired the judge he worked for was going to hire him and pay him out of the court budget and the sheriff said if he did that the he, the sheriff, would not give the individual a commission to perform his duties.

The chief from Reeds Spring is running. His name is Rick Witthuhn. He is retired from Witchita Kansas. He was also a chief of police for 7 years in a town in Kansas. Now he has been the chief for Reeds Spring for over a year. Total he has over 30 years of law enforcement experience. While in Witchita he worked in just about every aspect of law enforcement. He worked traffic, burglary detective, and as a homicide detective. Rick has great integrity and is down to earth. If Rick was the sheriff you or me as a citizen could to the office and talk to him about our concerns without feeling intemidated by the sheriff. He also wants to start a sheriff's committee. This would be a group of citizens from each part of the county that would meet with him and his supervisory staff at least once a month to keep him informed of problems in their part of the county. Therefore allowing him to allocate his staff in the areas needed. He has alot of great ideas and is going to be planning public meetings. I will try to keep everyone informed of the dates and times of the meetings on here so that you can come and meet the man.

I tried to meet with the sheriff about some problems. He was never at the office. The chief was rude and acted like he had been drinking. I hope this new guy is better than hill, and will actually come to work.

While being the chief at Reed he has had an open door policy with the residents. He has talked to them about everthing from law matters, life, to problems they are currently having not related to law enforcement. Rick has also came into work on his own time during weather warnings to make sure that the people in Reeds Spring get notified of the warning. (Not everyone can hear the siren in Reeds Spring. Rick did not clock in to do this he did on his own to ensure the citizen's safety. He is great guy and would also try to get more deputies in the south part of the county.

As a friend and co-worker of Rick Witthuhn for 20+ years, I can attest that he is one of the few "True Believers" I have have had the good fortune to know and serve with. He believes in the honor of serving his community as a cop, working with and helping citizens, regardless of how seemingly small their problems. He is deeply committed to the professional tenets of law enforcement and the positive role of the police in the community. For certain, he has always treated people with respect and courtesy, regardless of their social status. Rick is one of the most honorable men I have ever known. He had a variety of successful assignments and experiences at WPD, all of which have prepared him for any law enforcement mission that I can think of. Any community that he commits to protect is fortunate indeed.

The county commission, starting with the 2008 budget has put a progressive pay scale in place. It will let employees know what to expect as far as raises from year to year. It is based on years of service and has a starting pay. There were approximately 38 employees in the sheriff's offce that received raises. If someone did not get a raise, it could be that they had already exceeded the pay scale that the commission had set. Sheriff Hill had several meetings with the commission regarding pay raises. Sheriff Hill submitted his proposal, which was for everyone to get a decent raise and was denied by the commission.

As for buying 11 cars. The sheriff's office has 19 deputies, and 5 detectives. Of the 19 deputy vehicles, 10 of them were 100,000+ mileage vehicles and one of the detective vehicles needed replaced. The commission granted a request to replace 10 cars. Sheriff Hill, through good management, has been able to buy 11 cars using trade-ins.

Everything that the county commission or Sheriff's office does financially is public record and I encourage you to look at the records

Hill gets a new truck every year. He has removable SCSO logos so He can drive it to FL to visit his condominium while the county foots the bill "for training". They purchase PREMIUM GAS for the vehicles. His close (friends) employees purchase the old vehicles for a fraction of the cost. Non-residen deputies drive their cars home. Hey Galena resident, were you at the "mandatory meeting" where we deputies were asked (forced) to give up one of the proposed raised? Why not purchase the used State vehicles, that are in good condition (they have done in past) and convince the commissioners that the money saved could give us a decent hourly wage where we can support our families? What about helping with health/dental insurance? The budget is available, but not certain hidden funds. I had someone check.

in the past four years the turner over rate of deputy sheriffs has been 75. The majority of these were terminated Either they are hiring some REALLY BAD employees, or there are some MAJOR management issues. (i vote for the latter) And in case any readers were wondering, the comment from the deputy about the meeting to give up a raise is very much the truth.

Stone needs a new sheriff for sure. I am voting Rick Witthuhn all the way. He is a great guy w/ lots of experience. Also the SCSO has started getting their new Chargers and guess who the first one to get one was. Lt. Useless sorry I mean Lt. Estuler. Notice how it is a Lt. and not one of the road guys that are actually out working and need the new cars no we take care of the higher ups first. Rick would not do that, he puts his employees before himself. VOTE RICK WITTHUHN FOR SHERIFF ON AUGUST 5TH!!!

RICK WITTHUHN FOR SHERIFF - OUT WITH HILL

I agree that Witthuhn would probably run the sheriff's office like he does Reeds Spring. Then again, I'm not sure how some of that would be possible. Any real police work that needs done is handled by the sheriff's office. When was the last felony charge filed from an arrest made by a Reeds Spring officer? Any heavy lifting in law enforcement in Witthuhn's jurisdiction is done by the county deputies. Of course the sheriff's office would save some money on vehicles if Witthuhn were elected. Since his lapdog, Bridges, wouldn't need his own car.
Seriously though, running a county law enforcement agency is a tough job. Anyone doing a tough job will have their critics. Sheriff Hill does a fine job of providing for his agency and his county with the resources he has available to him. I weep for Stone County if it elects either of his opponents.

Mystery local,
I think you are attempting to disseminate some misinformation. I do not doubt that the SO does handle calls in Reeds Spring. They also handle calls in every municipality in Stone County. You also failed to state that Reed Spring (due to budget) does not have 24-hour coverage. If there were more officers to handle the calls, you would not be there. As far as any negative comments, it just took any validity away from the statement you were attempting to make. As a resident of Reeds Spring, I have had the privilege to meet with the officers on more than one occasion. The few officers working there have a wealth of experience and are quite capable of handling any situation should it arise. Since two of the officers are retired from major agencies, we as residents of Reeds Spring are very glad and proud to have them here. If your attitude regarding police work is as immature as your statements here, just stay in the county. I would rather have it handled by our local officers
