Complain about having a job (for a change)! I'm sure the students are interested in paying their extra wages.

Most of these UC custodial jobs are perfect for students, the hours being outside of class time and paying fairly well for unskilled labor, yet are filled by illegal aliens. The solution to this labor dispute is obvious, though not PC.

then it is your fault for not reporting this to ice, if there is any truth to this. i happen to know quite a few people working there in maintanance that are legal citizens, heck my friend is working in landscaping, and she is a white woman.

Well, I guess he showed them!

Who? I never even heard of this guy before.

Think of the speech he could have given, about fair treatment and equality and making a difference.

I suspect it's no great loss to the grads.

UC doesn't employ undocumented workers.

Oooh, ooh, I'll replace him! Not only that, I'll charge UCSC less than they would have paid him.

For my speech, I will talk about how low-wage workers are that way due to pressures from immigration. I will call for ICE to remove any of the low-wage workers at UCSC (probably employees of contract vendors rather than the U directly) who are not legally in the country.

But that would only be a warmup. I will then recite the salaries made by UCSC faculty members in the various "studies" programs, and call for them to take pay cuts if they are so socially conscious. I will point out that there is a huge list of wannabe faculty, so that any who "quit because they don't want a pay cut" can be instantly replaced by others who will work harder for less money, without needing to import people from other countries. Of course, some faculty (particularly in the sciences) are a bit harder to replace with others of the same achievement level, but those are not the ones calling for social justice anyway.

Folks, I actually did this, in writing to the U with my real name and address, a few years ago when Angela Davis wouldn't speak due to some random labor issue. The U actually wrote back!

yawn....typical clueless democrat politician.

So Ira, who nobody has ever heard of, how much should we pay the janitor's and dishwashers etc at UCSC and other UC's?$20/hr,$25/hr,$30/hr?

Not. Try minimum wage--at most. The are no skill, no education, no brain jobs. Like your job Ira, as a politician. You should get minimum wage at most too.

Among the many reasons it's hard for an institution to cut costs: there are nitwits like Assemblyman Ira Ruskin, D-Redwood City, who offer open criticism for doing so.

Thanks for nothing, Ira. California is deep in the red because you and your ilk like to spend uncontrollably, and now you've found yet another way to compound the problem.

Are you, by any chance, just one more lackey obliged to shill for your union handlers, rather than representing taxpayers being dragged down by California's monstrous public debt?

You often have some good things to say, but this is just dumb. Think about why they get jobs. Usually under the table,(no work. comp. ins. paid, no unemployment ins. paid, often barely min. wage paid) Employers get labor much cheaper, and don't have to worry about any job-related lawsuits coming their way. I agree there are many jobs to be had, but it seems many people are like Cousin Eddie on the "Vacation" movie franchise. Holding out for a management position.

Gee -
Why not hire some local speaker that is willing to take the bus or cancel the graduation ceremony - that will help solve the parking issues, budget problems, etc. if you can't get along - you don't get to play

I'll bet some of those UCSC workers are illegals. When they had the big protest last fall one of the demands on the protesters mad manifesto was to stop ICE from investigating the immigration status of UCSC employees. If they were legal, why would they care about ICE?

No, the UC merely fails to screen its contractors adequately and hides Juan through layers of subcontracts. Common in construction too.

These jobs are UC direct but would be perfect for work-study. Students should know what it is to have to work for a living.

This is just pandering to the SEIU. If you want higher salary and benfits for government unions then vote for this clown.

Anyone who doubts that public education unions are a societal cancer should read this article:

BTW: You know that SC City Schools Board of Education member Don Maxwell is a former union president, right?

Ruskin must be a major recipient of SEIU contributions! Why yes, I’d be willing to place money he is as SEIU has concentrated on providing huge dollar amounts into the coffers of your Democrat Politicians for years.

The SEIU even had their national president, Andy Stern listed a the most frequent visitor to the Obama White House for the months of Feb through July 2009!

SEIU is waist deep in the increase in total administration costs incurred to our education system, our medical system including hoispital and home care and the govetrnmant maintenance employees! Between the SEIU and the teachers unions we are in the never never land of ever increasing costs which have decimated the budgets and are breaking the bank!

It's absurd to suggest that immigration enforcement should be the responsibility of individual citizens. Just how likely is it that people would have proof that someone is an illegal immigrant? It's even more absurd to suggest that because you know people who are legal who are employed by UC that that would somehow disprove they don't hire illegals.

Great article. This scene is repeated in every state, county, city, district. Gilroy is about to have one as a new charter has been proposed.
