4th of July was one of the nicest holiday before we moved in East Palo Alto, unfortunately now in here every Holiday turns to a nightmare. Yesterday all over the news were saying firework is forbidden at East Palo Alto and we hoped that we will celebrate 4th of July peaceful except few kids firecrackers and our pets will be calm and we donít need to worry about have fire in this exceptional dry season.
When personal fireworks started at 9pm we tried to calm our dog and hoped at least it will finished soon. But extremely loud fireworks didnít stop. 10 pm I called 911 because I couldnít find any NON EMERGECY number on EPA Police site. We had a conversation cutting with explosions coming from my back yard. They told me they will send a car to the street. We waited half an hour nobody showed up and at 11pm firework was still going on. We had 2 more phone call and even we demand officers stop I our house no body showed up. Firework continued till 3.15 am.
In this situation I have 2 separate concerns, first one how I can trust my police if they will not take serious a complaint and never show up and second how I can trust a City forbid something and cant reinforced? Do we need to live in East Palo Alto like Wild Wild West? Sure looks like that.
This is only a one example how you can get any justice or police service I East Palo Alto. Few years ago our son and his fiancť came home after midnight, when they are parking the car front of our house 2 guys walk to their car and asked time. Our son pulled his cell phone and told them the time and they asked him to give his cell phone and wallet. He was young and inexperienced, step out to car and refused to give his belongings. They argue and guys break a cin bottle on his head, injured him and escaped. Police and firefighters respond fast but refused to fallow 2 guys even they were on foot. We ended with 12 thousand dollar emergency bill from this incident and even there was a full descriptions and police did know where these guys coming from (there was a party in neighborhood)nothing happened.
A month ago when I am coming from work I made a right turn to Euclid Avenue and somebody turn inside from curb and hit my car from right. It damaged my cars right side but didnít bother to stop. Called the police, in 5 minutes there was 5 police car came. But even I gave them full description to the car and driver and show them which direction car went none of them bother to fallow. I got an advice saying ďProbably driver doesnít have any papers and driver license and there is nothing we can doĒ. They even didnít bother to prepare report, only advise me report online.
In all these evidences give me an indication that if you are living in East Palo Alto donít expect anything from your local police.
I own a house in here and this neighborhood is my house. I am not planning to move out. Every day I am meeting new neighbors in the same situation. East Palo Alto demography is changing but not City Council and Police attitude. Somehow they need to understand citizens in East Palo Alto does not accept unsolved cases anymore and if they cant not able to handle the city, city needs to find some new people capable to handle it.
