"dispatched the animal". Wouldn't a tranquilized animal fall asleep? Why was a tranquilizer more dangerous to the public than a possible stray bullet. Fish and Game wardens are supposed to protect animals from useless slaughter aren't they?

translation: fish and game was too lazy to catch and release.
This situation we taxpayers would NOT be upset if the trank him, crate him and drive him up to a deep spot in trinity county. And release.
No, our tax dollars must be used for WASTEFUL spending.

An angry and cornered cougar will not fall asleep instantly when shot with a tranquilizer. In fact will attack to defend itself, especially with a crowd watching what is going on.
Personally I would have dispatched the beast also.
