Student Threatens Lawsuit: Instructor Didn't Treat Genesis as History
“I told them it was an extremely meaningful story, but you had to see it in a poetic, metaphoric or symbolic sense, that if you took it literally, that you were going to miss a whole lot of meaning there.”
In Red Oak, Iowa, an instructor at the Southwestern Community College has evidently been fired because he told his students that he didn't treat the story of Adam & Eve in the Bible as literal historical fact. via About.com

This move towards theocracy makes me glad that I moved to a more enlightened state. Can you believe Arkansas? Who would have believed this formally backward state could overtake the " home of the Iowa test" state?

USSR, in earlier years, had a youth movement called the Young Pioneers.
This group was expected to keep a watch on their own parents, relatives and teachers for any counter-culture acts or statements. When one occurred they knew and had access to the correct person to whom they were to make their report. Often the "offender" was a school or university instructor who deviated from the party line. As a result, the instructor was fired or more severely punished and the complaining Young Pioneer was give a medal to wear. When I read the tale of the Bitterman's firing for not teaching the Pentateuch verbatim, I was left with one question; did President Crittenden give the complaining student his/her medal?
