Does anyone know anything about the accident last night between Red Bud and Hecker?

Apparently a bunch of people were in the middle of the road fighting. An unnamed driver drove upon the fight and ended up striking 2 people with his car. One died the other is in the hospital.

From stltoday.com
One man was killed and another injured when an SUV struck them early Sunday.

According to the Illinois State Police, the driver of the SUV was headed south on Illinois 159 one-half mile north of Road LL shortly before 3 a.m. in Monroe County. He told police he crested a hill and saw several people fighting in the road. The right front side of the SUV struck two of the pedestrians.

Shane A. Toenjes, 23, of Millstadt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Tyler J. Donjon, 24, of Red Bud, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

The driver was released pending further investigation.

I hope they don't put all the blame on the driver in this incident. It's a shame someone had to lose their life, but it's also a shame someone has to have a death on their hands for the rest of their life over something like this.

Paderborn is bad news. So many fights break out, and something like this was bound to happen.

This death is not on the hands of the driver but on the hands of Shane, Tyler and anyone else that was involved. This was an accident caused due to the actions of others not the actions of the driver. If anyone should accept blame for the outcome its Tyler and rest of the retards that were standing in the middle of the road.

The papers and news stations are already saying the driver was released pending charges from the states attorney.

There is plenty of time to see anyone in the road where they were hit. So yeah they were wrong for being in the road but the driver needs to be under control of his vehicle also.

Tyler and his friends were heading back to Red Bud, the blame should be on the tuff Paderborn/Millstadt guys that had to follow them getting them to stop their vehicle. I agree that Paderborn is bad news, a bunch of young people asking for trouble. I feel sorry for Danny because he has to live with hitting both guys and the death of one. People need to grow up and Paderborn tavern needs to see this as a wake up call.

Unless they were fighting in a cross walk, pretty sure its illegal to be in the street in the first place.

It was 3:00 in the morning which means it was dark. It was on a highway which means the speed limit was 55 mph. There is a reason it is illegal to be in the middle of the road...because it's dangerous. They teach you that in preschool. He could have been right next to them and those boys could have stepped right out in front of them while they were having their childish tantrum. Not only did those boys endanger their own lives, but the lives of everyone else on that road. How can you say "there is plenty of time to see anyone in the road where they were hit"? How can you defend the actions of grown ass men that were ON THE ROAD at 3:00 am fighting?? That is ridiculous. Sorry for the loss of the family, but he knowingly did something life threatening

I hope everyone had a blood test done on them. I don't know the whole story but I was young once and I do know what 20 somethings do at 3:00 AM Sunday mornings. You know the day right after Saturday night.. I also hope the truth will be allowed to come out and not treated like the some of these so called "newspapers" have done. Any other time they would allow comments to be posted on their useless blog.

i have to watch my small children.. all day to make sure they are NOT in the road.. this is a lesson i will teach them until they are old enough to walk w/out mommy being there... These men should have been wise enough to not fight in the road. PERIOD. It's a sad story, for all involved.. but if they had just choosen NOT to fight, to walk somewhere ELSE to fight, this could have been prevented, for EVERYONE.

I don't think a blood test needs to be done when everyone saw the entire group of guys fighting at the bar just moments before. I know when I'm at a bar at 2:30 am, it's not to drink soda. And I'm not defending the driver either because what else would you be doing driving around at 3:00 am? But I hope that they don't make these boys out to be victims and the driver out to be the villan. No one is looking for grown ups fighting in the middle of a busy highway...no matter what time it is or what you have been drinking.

The law in IL says the operator of any vehicle involved in an "accident" where there is a fatality involved that operator must take a blood test. I think this may even hold true if the "accident" occurs on private property. I'm not saying the operator of the vehicle which struck these unfortunate men is TOTALLY at fault. But if he was drinking then he shares some of the blame. Its as simple as that. As a license operator you are to maintain control of the vehicle at ALL times. If there is ice on the road or fog or rain then you should slow down until you can operate said vehicle SAFELY under the current conditions. EVEN if it means you must come to a complete stop. Otherwise you are guilty of 1. Failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident or 2.Driving too fast for conditions.

Its hard to believe someone who's favorite quote on facebook was "if you don't like me then f*ck you don't talk to me" was involved in drunken violence.
