I was stopped and ticketed by one of Ashburns police officers a few weeks ago on I-75. It was 1 o'clock in the morning and the officer said I was going 83mph in a 60mph construction zone. I didn't see the speed limit sign reducing the speed from 70 to 60. The officer told me to call the next day, to find out the amount of the ticket. I called and the fine was $450.00. I don't deny speeding, but the amount seemed excessive. Does anyone know if the fines double only when the workers are present? I didn't see any. Also does anyone know if you can attend traffic school to get the ticket reduced or dismissed? I am trying to decide whether to make the 9 hour trip back to Ashburn for court or just mail city hall the 450. I have been driving for 30 yrs and had never received a speeding ticket, until I came through Ashburn. The city of Ashburn has a money making operation on I-75.

I came up with the same thing, the cop stopped me and told me I was driving at 86 miles per hour, I have been driving in this country for 9 years and have been to scared to drive to fast, I was in the slow lane behind two tracker trailers, I didn't know what I was doing, but I know 70 would have been my tops, I had my friend and two teenagers in the car, my daughter and her friend.I don't speed, but I didn't see the 60 sign.
My friend thought that the city of Ashburn use the tickets as a cash cow as they don't have much revenue otherwise.
there were no workers present.
they want me to pay $735.

Okay, I have been in touch with the DOT in Ga and there is no state construction going on at mile marker 83 on I 75, it has to be local, which to me is a bit suspect.
feels very much like a speed entrapment, so probably my feelings that I would not have been going more then 70 was probably right, and the cop was just trying to get as much money on his speeding ticket as he could.

My daughter was driving on 75 (Ashburn, GA) on her way to Florida to check out a college and was pulled over and told she was going 19 miles over the speed limit and she swears she wasn't going that fast and the officer just hands her the ticket and tells her, he knows she won't appear in court and to call on Monday to find out what the amount of her ticket would be. Well, she calls when she gets back home(Illinois) which is 8 hours from Ashburn, GA and the ticket was $500.00 and was also told it was construction zone. I would think you would know if you were in a construction zone or not. I just see too many people with the same story on Ashburn. I think the city must be making a killing on tickets.

I got stopped at the same point and also found out upon calling them that I am being charged $450.00. I don't remember seeing any indication at all that it was a construction zone (cones, signs, etc.), and I would've checked had the cop mentioned it but he neglected to do so.
I called the DOT and they said that the two mile stretch was previously under construction but is almost wrapped up, however it is still deemed a construction zone. So obviously its only purpose at this point is fund-raising.

Can anyone familiar with that area (around mile marker 82) let me know what kind of visual indications declaring a construction zone are in the area? I'm quite a ways away but I'm planning on fighting it -- Thanks

hey, so I got a ticket tonight coming home from FL. my ticket says i was going 82 in a 60. The thing is I know i wasnt in a work zone. I was past exit 84 which is after Ashburn. I know this b/c It was where 3 lanes became open, and Ive been on that road many times. On my ticket it says I was at exit 80 meaning before the city. Also Im pretty sure... just like the post before... it was already up to 70mph. Yes i was still speeding but Still. What should I do? Make a court date and fight b/c the officer was wrong about the exit / speed signs or no?

workers do not have to be present....it is still a construction zone...you don't want to get a ticket for speeding? here's a tip...DON'T SPEED! I didn't make you speed, but I will stop you if you do...see the bodies I have seen being mopped up off the highways due to people speeding..it's not pretty. slow down, we are out there, we do our job, and we will find you and stop you and ticket you.

Yea I got the same ticket there was no 60mph sign out last night and the speed he clocked me was not the speed I was going. I also failed to see any traffic cones. It appeared to be only a three lane highway.

I'm sorry, but have no sympanthy for those who speed and FINALLY get caught. If you have read above comments, this is a heavily posted area until DOT renders it otherwise. Stay alert. Getting there 20 minutes earlier might not save your life, or that of others.

You cops telling people to slow down are morons. It seems like you are only stopping people in that little zone. If you are going to tell people it's their own fault then at least make the scenario more realistic out there.
You are giving those tickets becuase you little backwards town needs the revenue. Be honest about it.
At least tell folks that if they don't slow down then you will collect revenue from them!!

Got into a similar situation where in the cop was parked right where the speed limit changed. IT was the deputy sheriff. I also received a fine of $450. First speeding ticket for me too.

I wanted everybody's opinion on what they intend to do with the ticket. Are they planning to pay up or contest it.

Well I was one of the lucky ones to be stopped on I-75 in the town of Ashburn on June 22, 2009 making my way back to Florida. I admit that I was in the wrong and I accept my punishment. I have the highest respect for law enforcement officers and the job that they do. My only suggestion is that these fines are EXTREMELY steep; we are in the middle of a recession, can a girl get a payment arrangement or something.$450 / 3 months =$ 150 a month..........LOL! no such luck I guess

Welcome to GA!

The police in GA do not tackle real crimes. I believe they are solely for the purpose of generating income through various types of tickets and fines.

Ashburn police is not the only police department that is involved in this abuse of power. The entire police force, GA Patrol, County Sheriff and any other type of police pepartment are involved. If you speed in GA. You get a ticket!

I think their names should be changed to GA Police Tax Collectors or GA Tax Patrol!

Go to the courts and work out a lesser fine with the prosecutor. The purpose of the ticket is get money so they will negotiate the fine with you but you can never be found innocent in any traffic court in GA.

for your information...we do tackle real crimes, however some officers are assigned as a traffic unit and their sole purpose is to enforce traffic laws of the state. don't blame us because you speed and we catch you...and how about if you ever need our help you just call a crack head instead...other wise slow down or shut up!
