" prices are ridiculously low because we have subsidies" said Al Boscov. Subsidies =TAXPAYER MONIES. I didn't get any subsidies to purchase my home, I got mine the old fasion way I EARNED IT, & I might add I worked hard all my life to be able to afford a home. Without taxpayer monies. Another socialist government program!!!!!!

Please wait...
Notice how Al Boscov rarely ponies up any of his money. It's most always government money, not his own.
If Al Boscov really wanted to help the city, he would have built a store there. Back when his 9th Street store burnt down ... what does Al Boscov do ... instead of supporting the city, and the loyal city customers who helped build his business, he rebuilds outside of town - so much for helping the city.
And more recently, from my understanding, even after bankruptcy of Boscov's, creditors, many of them being local businesses, were stiffed out of over $70 million!
Don't get me wrong, it's great people are willing to help the city, but Al Boscov is only in it for his own ego (and from some reports, padding his own coffers by getting kickbacks / discounts from the contractors involved with remodeling the homes), doing very little to really help the city compared to others, such as the late Mike O'Pake.

Mouthpieces who spread around OPM like it's thier own and take credit for it and think THEY should be thanked for it are a dime a dozen. Every politician pulls the same con on the public, as well. Just another example of their uselessness.

All the homes are in the worst neighborhoods of course. You can change the inside of the house all you want, but its still in the city. I have looked at the homes and they are beautiful inside and well done, but in bad areas.

If AL wanted to do good, he'd open the first ALL SPANISH Boscovs inside the city. Let them speak their language, work there and pig the place up like they did to all the Wal-Marts in Berks. Keep them inside of the city limits. Al Boscov is the farthest thing to a savior for this city. He's just making it more dependable on Government funding.

Most people don’t realize that Al Boscov’s OUR CITY READING non-profit (LOL) actually gets homes that are deemed blighted. The way it works is if the city run “blighted review board” deems a house is blighted Al Boscov gets first dibs. Sure he fixes them up but like others have said he uses tax payer money to do so. He also has an interest in properties of substance that are on or around Penn St for obvious reasons. OUR CITY READING has around 100 homes currently and they don’t work on all at once. That means that people are losing properties because of blight yet Al doesn’t have to work on the blight right away like the normal folks are forced to. He also had a property that made the Mayors “Wall of Shame” but it was quickly removed. And does anyone else think that Al gets Quality Of Life tickets like the other folks do??? The answer is no. It’s very easy to see that the city has setup a circle jerk so that screws the common owner and rewards good old’ Al.
