From one who personally knows the situation, the problems and the administrators:

The Principal whose name is Mr. Butler is an extremely professional and intelligent, caring, strong individual.

He does not have to comment every time someone wants publicity and thinks they can fix the school's problems. He is also well versed and experienced as a former teacher at the high school.

He will, in a professional manner, address the student in an appropriate and timely fashion as he always does. Such issues are never dealt with in front of TV cameras and the Principal is aware of possible future ramifications of such behavior.

This Principal addresses students and issues in a professional manner every hour of every school day. Simply because some do not understand professional conduct or the correct way to handle a request, does not mean that the Principal is incorrect.

His actions reflect his professional, intelligent and experienced demeanor. That is why he is such a valuable asset at Reading High School.

The thing is, no matter how professional he is, the system is failing. There is an obvious disrespect for authority among the student population. The problem starts with the parents, then the staff.

I don't see why I would have had to worked at RHS in order to be able to have an opinion on where the problems are. I am not a know-it-all, but it's not hard to figure out when you live in the area to tell that most of the parents just don't give a crap about how their children act.

I've never worked at that school or any school. All you have to do is talk to the people who have children who go to the school and find out what is going on in there. RHS is like a war zone right now. Why? Mostly because the children are out of control. Their behavior problems begin from lack of support from either parents or guardians, then the staff of the school.

The first steps of this cause is to raise awareness and let other students who are feeling as i do, that they are not alone.
A Meeting with The principal is scheduled this week and hopefully the principal will ok the group.
Now if/when this group takes off the ground, the first order of business is to go to the students, brainstorm on what they would like to see discipline wise and how to get to making that happen. Of course we will need the Principal's permission to do so. A well thought out and written proposal is in the works.
Once I get this group together and is a strong enough group (number of people) I will make my identity public. Most students already know it was me so its only a matter of time anyways.
Thank You for the Support
and Don't Worry, I'm not Trying to go at it Alone.

Just some starting questions:

Could the students stop hitting and injuring the teachers?

Could the students please stand to pledge the American flag in HR? If you can fight over flying a foreign country's flag, respect the nation where you do that fighting.

Could they please keep quiet when requested?

Could they please stop defecating on the floors in the lavatories, smearing it on the walls, and clogging the toilets with underwear and TP?

Could they please listen to announcements when asked by Principal and teacher?

Could they do their classwork and HW?

Could you please ask students to bring a pencil/pen to school?

Could they please stop keying the teachers' cars?

Could the gangs refrain from walking the halls and intimidating the others?

Could they please stop dealing drugs in the buildings? And stop using/dealing to and from school?

Could they stop bringing guns, bullets, razor blades, knives to school?

Could they please stop calling the teachers disgusting names in 2-3 languages?

Could they please stop picking the locks of the teachers classroom doors, closets, and desks?

Could they please stop using their cell phones to plan gang fights and drug deals?

Could they refrain from throwing the $80 textbooks out of the windows then complain there are not enough books?

Could they please stop the daily food fights and hall fights?

Could they please stop wearing chains on their belts?

Could they please stop blaming the teachers and lying about them?

Could they please refrain from exhibiting their underwear to the teachers and other offended students?

Could the females please refrain from showing their boobs, tattoos, belly rings and bellies all day?

Would any/all students refrain from wearing their pajamas to school?

Could they stop wearing their gang colors in school?

Could the students refrain from having sex inside and outside of the buildings in the corners?

Could they stop stealing the computers and selling them in the city?

Could you enforce the no phone or music rules during class time?

Could you require the students to stop stealing the teachers' cars, keys, phones, purses, jackets, money, books, driver's licenses, IDs?

When parents give a phone number, please tell them to give a valid, current number. Then please answer it.

Could they please stop shooting the windows out?

Coud they please stop resisting the police when students are violent?

Could their parents take some measure of responsibilty when they come to school drugged/drunk from home?

Could the students please refrain from flattening the adults' tires?

Please tell parents to stop insulting and degrading the teachers during a call/meeting.

Parents...please don't again tell the teacher it is his/her First Amendment right to tell the teacher to go f**k themselves.

Just a start. Good Luck, John.

Reading High school is like a torture camp in Iraq. Blow it up with the animals inside. Ridiculous that Reading is such a filthy waste. Our soliders are fighting in Iraq when there is one right here in Berks PA. Disgusting filthy animals. Go back to your huts in your jungles and act like apes there. But, no we would rather work out buts off while the animals mate and reproduce bigger wastes to society. Rotten garbage thats all Reading is. Now its spreading to the nice areas around it.

I am a reading High parent of 4 girls that currently attend, and I must say that I am appauled @ all the behavior and violence that has been occuring over the past 2 years. If I was able to and had the income, I would pull my girls from the school district all together. I have 2 more children that will be attending next year and I am seriously c onsidering making some changes and moving to lancaster, Pa.

I think as parents, we should be heading to the school and make the principle talk and take action. Let me know the day and time, and I will be there.

I graduated from RHS 13 years ago. It has drastically changed since then. I now have a daughter who attends RHS. This past week there has been fire alarms that were pulled just about every day. On Thursday during this fire alarm evacuation my daughter was jumped in front of the school along with about 6 or 7 other fights at the time. When I received the phone call I was upset and mad as hell. The school is suppose to protect our children and it seems like they can't do that right. I think we as parents of the children who want to learn to take action and help the school and the other children "Take Back there school". My daughter since then refuses to return to school because she does feel safe. I don't want to force her to go because as a parent I vowed to protect my children from harm. I want my children to get an education but not at the expense of there safety.
i agree with you that the school should be protecting your children but i no a simple result to all this..home school your child..*cyberschool* there is no bullying, no bullets laying in the halls, no girls or guys waiting for your child so they can jump them...none of that bullcrap. your child would be worry free and RHS would be shit out of luck without all the GOOD kids in school..

i greatly encourage and look up to the kid trying to make a difference in RHS but there's no use if no ones going to listen. Specially the principal. I think your best result and evey good and interested in learning children should just enroll in a decent charter school. they are relatively better then public school and absolutely safe. You wont find bullets laying on the floor in your childs learning environment, you wont find you kid wanting to stay home all the time, and most of all you wont have to worry about fearing that your kid is not safe or that your going to get a ccall while your at work saying your child has been shot. it's just a simple result you go ahead and try and make a difference kid, more power to you. good luck. your going to need it.

I am not surprised by the fact that a bullet was found in the hallways. I have four children that attend Reading High School. It is very hard for me to send them to school on a daily basis wondering if they're going to get hurt or not. Everyday they come home with a story about some type if incident that has taken place. This school sounds more like a zoo than a learning institution. The administration has basically given up on the youth of the school. They have allowed the thugs and misfits to take over the school. They need a new principal perhaps "Joe Clark" that can take the reigns and also accept responsibility for the deplorable condition the school is in. However, I do applaud the young man's efforts in trying to take back the school. Let us just all pray that the administration has his back. I am a graduate of the mighty "Castle On the Hill". Let our children be proud to say I am a Red Knight!

but someone please answer the question, why now, when you are going to have 1/2 the number of kids at the high, 9 & 10th grade is going to the old St.Joe's, kick out the kids 19 and up, let them go to night school and the new ones that come out of St Joe's school should be fresh, but I also have to get on some of the teachers who is just in it for a pay check, these kids need you also, some kids dont have parents, hot meals, warm home, or anything to look forward too.

if you want to take back the school (and the city) go to ALL school board meetings. On an average about, perhaps, less that TEN taxpayers, parents, students, attend a school board meeting. With so few attending is it any wonder RSD does as they please.
It's way over due for the taxpayer to take over, take back ALL public schools.
I truly understand your fears and frustrations...have for years long before this most recent uproar...saw it coming...see where it is going
...nowhere good...only getting worse.

I, and my friends have for years tried to assist in straightening out the city with our proactive stance regarding disrespectful and criminal behaviors. Not enough of us and too many criminals and those who follow the No Snitch policy.

The problems as I have learned them during the past 20 years:

Today parents don't know what their children/teens are doing 24/7/365 but it is definitely their responsibility to know...and to raise them with civic pride and excellent, upstanding, courageous values.

Parents foolishly or naively believe their youth even when they are LYING. Parents believe their own blood over honest teachers, police, etc.

There is definitely a gang presence in the city and some parents are definitely directly involved in those endeavors and they direct their own young family members to participate in city/county crimes.

There are others who refuse to report anything they have seen or heard regarding criminal activities and drug use/dealing or gun sales, burglaries, robberies, murders, etc. Either because they are
afraid or because they are directly/indirectly involved themselves or others.

Some teens are deliberately sent out to buy/deal drugs for their parents/relatives to use at home so the adults don't get arrested and charged.

When all of the good citizens unite and force the troublemakers out of the city, only then will the city improve. The schools only receive what comes from the city's population.

Are there block parents, crime watches, honest, alert citizens willing to become proactive?

Is there a speakeasy in your area? Report it.

Do you know people who are willing to stand watch and report?

Do you report dealers when you suspect them?

Do you volunteer in the school or community?

Don't let the bullies/murderers/gangs continue to destroy the once beautiful city any longer. They are stealing the peace, serenity, educations, tax money and opportunities from every good and decent citizen in Reading and Berks County. That is disgraceful!!!!!!!

Do you speak up for others when you see a wrongful event?

Do you always report gang activity when you see it accumulating on the corner or near the schools? Do you speak up?

Remember: Violence begets violence.

It is very easy to speak up and complain about the problems...That's simple. That's just verbalizing.

It is a whole different ballgame when you are actively assisting. And your teens are actively assisting. And you speak up...and they speak up.

I have always believed that the people of a city or area get exactly the type of area they have all worked and fought for and deserve.

Some have been actively participating for years. It is a very precarious endeavor.

I earnestly hope you continue with your efforts and succeed.

As a former teacher I can say that too many parents see school as a form of glorified babysitting. The solution to this problem is to make people pass a test before they are allowed to reproduce. If they can't pass the test, they should be sterilized. I know no one wants to hear this and somehow the race card will be pulled, but it will eliminate the problem.
Also, I taught in RHS as a long term sub for two months about 10 years ago. There was some fighting but nothing like this. This is one of the reasons I refuse to teach. It is just a matter of time before more teachers come to this conclusion as well and leave the profession. Parents need to take responsibility and if they can't then the kids need to be taken away and they need to be fixed. It's as simple as that.
