Today as i was unlocking the door to my building. i noticed some papers hanging from the door stating that a person in my building is being sued by the landlord for back rent and illegal activity in there apartment. I knew it was going on and had reported it to the police a long time ago. All the police had to say was that there was nothing that they could do. Thank goodness the building manager finally told the landlord. I have lived in other areas around reading and have found them to be much safer than living in the middle of the city. I agree that some blocks may be ok to live in but my opinion of the city is that it is an awful place for anyone to live, Let alone to raise children in.

The courageous police have a supportive union that works to protect them and their rights and they deserve it.

Unfortunately, it cannot protect them from the horrendous gang members with weapons, drugs and endless criminal intent. While there are wonderful, intelligent and peace-loving responsible citizens in Reading, there are also myriad disgusting, gutless groups coming in weekly from.... wherever...looking for a handout..a free education...cheap housing...a safe house to hide in with the gang...free medical...etc.

I'm not sure but I think they are catching a number of criminals in Reading?

God Bless the Chief and his valued men and women!

Naturally, being poor does not make someone a savage. That is just common sense.

Criminal behaviors make them criminals who should be locked away from civil beings.

In civil area with responsible citizens, we do not hear gunshots most nights. Nor do our grandmothers sit in the streets at tables playing cards.

In civil areas, we do not have drug dealers and gang members on many corners. The corners, streets, and parks belong to the people, not the thugs.
.
In civil areas, we do not shoot at one another, rape the old women and children, or shoot our police officers. We protect them from criminals.

In civil areas, we do not have a "No Snitch" policy, rampant in many cities. We report criminal activity often and with gusto. While crime does exist, it is not allowed to continue and grow exponentially, once discovered.

Do not confuse feelings of confusion with attitudes of superiority. Civil citizens are perplexed by many inner city activities and wish never to participate.

In civil areas, parents and family members attempt to guide their children through teaching responsibility, the value of education, and the responsibilities of citizens. In many urban settings, parents and other family members continue the teachings of long understood gang and thug values like drug dealing, gang initiations, beatings, robberies, burglaries, car theft, etc. Some parents send their teens and children out onto the streets to deal, then bring the drugs and money home to "Mommy" or "Daddy" because they have a "problem".

Also, sheer numbers of murders and major crimes occur in urban areas, not because of poverty but clearly due to the irresponsible and learned attitudes of the urban powerful thugs whose parents and guardians usually reward their criminal behaviors.

Obviously, I would not assimilate well into your neighborhood nor you in mine as I defend my way of life while you defend yours.

Let's keep it that way, shall we, as to avoid any potential future problems?

Anyone who remembers Reading, Philly, Lebanon, Lancaster, Allentown, etc. in the 50s and 60s (before the destructive invasion of others) might tell you they were very pleasant areas to live and work. NO major drug gangs, no home invasions, no nightly shootings, no specific cultural groups encouraging their kids to rob, steal, rape, deal or kill.

The main streets were beautiful, safe, welcoming, busy and inviting. Today they are empty and dangerous thoroughfares for drug dealers and drug buyers, and gang members wielding illegal guns.

Compared to today, they were the Garden of Eden but some invaded the cities and destroyed them.

Please do not ever defend trash and garbage. Pick it up, destroy it, deport it. It cannot be taught morals, honesty, or integrity as it is only garbage.

To report illegal immigrants and the businesses who hire them call, toll free:

1-866-DHS-2ICE

1-866-347-2423

Have all information on hand...names, addresses, areas, phone numbers, or suspicious activity.

Legal of illegal, call someone, or call 911 for legals.

Do your part. Actions speak louder than words. One should not complain about the situation if one does not participate in the solution.

We can no longer afford these criminals...and we do not want them here.

As an update.. the man that lived above me was kicked out and the police are on the lookout for him. they did a search in his apt and found a loaded unregistered gun and a lot of different drugs. he never came back to pick up his belongings and the clothing, shoes, and kitchen supplies were donated to goodwill. the man that lived below me was arrested a few weeks ago for drugs. the druggies are now out of my building.

This morning, a news report was released concerning more computers missing from the Reading School District.

Again, there will be fingers pointed in all directions, especially at the adults.

I'm not sure but I believe it is time to look toward the real problem...some of the students.

As we all know, there are great, moral, intelligent students in the district raised by responsible and caring adults. But...

There are many undeserving, irresponsible, unethical, dishonest, thieving students there also.

These groups (gangs, thugs) congregate and plan their daily and weekly activities together and individually.

They steal anything not locked down and even some things that are locked up. They throw books out the windows at random the minute a teacher is turned away, then claim ignorance or theft. They remove any and all items from the buildings either for kicks, to get out of school work, or for monetary profit.

My own children have reported to me some of the activities perpetrated there. For years, it always amazed me how some of the students or teachers had the guts to return every day.

These youth are cunning and seasoned theives before they even enter high school. I am sure any teacher there can recount horror stories regarding a few students. They steal pencils, calculators, books, cell phones, wallets, purses, bookbags, IPODS, MP3 players, and, yes, even computers. They sell drugs and anything else they can get their hands on.

They steal something one minute, pass it on to their friend, and in 2 minutes you will not be able to find the item on anyone. These are seasoned professionals who are morally supported by their parents if one is caught.

They break into each others lockers, destroy personal items like clothes and sneakers, then watch quietly as the victims work feverishly to locate their items.

They text one another proudly of their accomplishments then gather after school to share their bounties of the day.

Teachers have had countless personal items stolen
repeatedly. It is not unusual for your purse, phone, computer, wallet, jacket, teachers' books to disappear in some schools.

Some teachers have had their cars vandalized and yes, even stolen while at work. Slashed tires, scratched paint, missing license plates or inspection stickers occur.

Students have been known to unlock locked doors, remove anything they want, then walk out the doors.

Any student there who can see or hear knows the truth but are silenced by the physical threats of violence or stalking to keep quiet. Even teachers have been threatened but know that, at times, it is best left alone because...

They also know that they too might be the next victim of even more heinous and violent behaviors
by the gangs.

the American school has certainly changed!

I live on the borderline between Reading and Mulenburg township.Alot of my neighbors are Dominican,Puerto Rican and one family from Africa. They all have clean beautiful homes and we all get along.I am a Italian American and grew up in Reading when it was so beautiful. But crime has no color. You can have white trash too.I wouldn't trade my Dominican neighbors in for another couple if you paid me.Gangs and drugs came here because they left it go too long.Drug dealers have all colors and most of the big drug dealers are white.I think the cops do a good job in Reading considering what they are up against. The government left drugs in our country many years ago.If there was no drugs there wouldn't be jobs for the cops. The government is behind everything!I love my country but fear my government!!!

The corruption behind all the drama from the Reading School District is from people that run our schools, not the students!!!Right before they burned down the warehouse they had the FBI in on it because they knew that people that run the Reading School District are doing alot of inside crime.

angry - you feel safe raising your children in reading. You have got to be kidding. Everyday there is a new murder? Today someone got stabbed on the Thun walking trail. Just great. There is a nice trail for people to get exercise and mugged.

Canal street pub is the only thing good about reading

That is very true. But that is happening in most every city in America.Look how bad Lancaster county got and every city in Pa,even up in the cold regions like Pottsville.

Moved to a different part of reading and within 3 weeks someone busted a window out of my car. They stole over $400 worth of stereo equipment. My car was parked at my steps and i never heard them. The police just took a statement. What good does a statement do. They could of tried getting fingerprints or done something. What kind of world do we live in???

Believe it or not,the murder rate went down alot.Around 2000 till 2005 was the highest. My cousin was murdered execution style in 2001 and i remember that year it was one murder after another.Every city has crime, hell Lancaster good old Amish country has just as much crime.I see alot of crime outside of Reading, gangs are robbing the houses outside, you can run but you cant hide from the crime.Be prepared, buy a dog, gun, security system, whatever you feel safe with

in reply to the person who asked if i realy feel safe raining my children here the answer is yes .just off the top of my mind i remeber calibine. a mine who rape and murder three girls and buried them under cement in his drive way. jon bennet ramesy .the man who had childrenwith his daughter and had her hidden in a room downstairs .the girl who was taken out of her home and was found years later living with a man who made her his second wife .the you tube video with the girls beating up the other girls.my point is what kind of community were these again oh yeah so called good neighborhoods . it they neighborhoods you see on the news with the worst crime against children . so yes i feel safe raising my children in reading because as you can see crime against children also happen in white picket fence community and are the one most heard of.

Noname, you should worry more about your atrocious grammar and spelling and less about the city where I live, and love. Illiterate people like you are(I used 'are' because I'm referring to multiple people so 'is' doesn't work) what's holding cities and this country back. Read a book, take a class, learn something before you write ignorant opinions.
