I dunno, depends if the drivers were paid for their time or not. A third party paid for the tolls and gas. The buses ARE taxpayer owned though...

Not just paying the drivers, but a rental fee that covers insurance, depreciation, wear and tear, etc.

Government employees never recognize the true cost of anything.

Why not just rent a bus from a private firm and avoid the controversy?

Buses used by the transportation authority would fit for this particular rally. Showing up on private coach buses wouldn't make as much of an impact, visually, I guess.

But the protesters are representing their private grievances, not any public concern.
