My family has Kindles. Less space, zillions of books, smaller carbon footprint, saves gas, saves trees. Cushing had the right idea.

Ali, the point is reading not carbon footprints, but a pat on the back for you.
For many families books can be obtained for free or little money so cost would not be an issue. A quiet space to read can be an oasis.
Unfortunately, the audience here are already readers to some degree so it is like "preaching to the choir".
Example is key, just like buckling your seatbelt whenever you get into your car reading vs. reality TV watching is the way to go and your child and brain will thank you down the road.

Kindles or books aside, like Reading Rocks pointed out, the point here is the actual act/art of reading. Personally I love the feel and smell of a book. There is just something so soothing and almost therapeutic about getting lost in the actual pages of a good book. As always, great post!!

Well Ali, I think you missed the point of the column. If you read through again, you will see that the point is to make books, which can be found for "free", available to children at a very, very young age. Make them a part of their life! There will be an age appropriate time for Kindles, Iphones, xboxes and all the other electronic gadgets they will be introduced to. By the way,
check out the carbon footprint in producing these electonic gizmos and batteries. You will not find this info in your KINDLE!
