Well, you see the value of asking a question on topix. Bunch of dumbasses answer. The people who bring out the food at Sonic don't make minimum wage, so any kind of tip is good.

That's the fault of the restaurant, not the customer. That being said, if my change is 50 cents or less, I tell them to keep it. If everyone did that, it would increase their pay by a few bucks an hour if they are busy.

The girls at sonic do not make minimum wage just like other servers at restaurants. I don't know that there is a set tip rate but I generally give them $1.00 extra. That's just me. Any amount is better than nothing and helps them. If they don't male enough in tips to make their pay minimum wage, then the restaurant does have to pay tie difference. However, I think that they deserve the tips. They come out to your vehicle and bring your food, regardless of weather or other conditions unlike other fast food places that hand it out a window. If you beep and ask for more ketchup for example, they bring it to you. Most of these girls are young just trying to make money. It doesn't hurt to give them a tip. Karma people!

The problem with people in our area is evident here..

I would imagine that if their govvy checks were taken away, and they had to seek employment at sonic... they would appreciate a tip as well.

And I have worked for sonic while in high school, and it is true that the Car Hops do not make minimum wage- they are paid much less and rely on tips. If they don't even out to minimum wage in the long run, they get a boost to that minimum wage level.
(or at least I hope they do, cuz car hopping to some of the retards that have posted here would do a person in.)

And as a cashier at wal-mart... I have to say, a tip would be nice.. but we'd have to turn it away. At least a car hop gets to keep their tips.

Sometimes I tip there, especially if the change from my order makes for a decent amount of tip. But most often, I pay with a debit card, and unlike sit-down restaurants where you are expected to tip, there is no place to tip on the debit card. If they want tips from customers who pay with a card, they need to switch machines so that it prints a spot for a tip and a signature.

I remember what it was like to be young and broke. Thankfully, I'm no longer broke. If I can afford $4.59 to eat lunch, I can afford $5.00. I understand that there are just trying to make ends meet and who who can't afford a even a few cents. But those people don't need to be eating at Sonic (or any other restaurant).

The car hops donNot get paided minimum wage at all. As fact to be known they only get paid like waitress doin a sit down resturant and have to bring your food to you in all types of weather. So tipping them shouldn't be even an issue. I think they should make more then anyone that works there because they do alot of work there and do it under alot of weather for that matter. So have a heart and Help them out Good Grief...............

I tip unless I have to use my card. I agree that there should be a spot on the machine to tip by debit card. Usually I have a couple dollars with me though. I usually give $2. It's usually more than 20% but really, two dollars to them means a lot more than two dollars to me. Not saying I don't need the money, just saying I've been the underpaid worker before and I know how it feels.

My thinking has always been if you don't have the 15-20% extra to pay for being served then you don't need to be going to those establishments to eat. We've got a society full of entitlement-crazed moochers. I'm not saying that the restaurant establishments aren't partly to blame for the overwhelming lack of knowledge of what these girls (and guys) make per hour, but even if they did there would still be tightwads in our society that would be satisfied letting the person that serves them make their 2 dollars plus per hour.

It really makes me wonder if some of the people who have posted above would even give a few bucks to their own daughter for car-side food service if she worked at Sonic or carry-out at Coltons... it's pathetic.

I work at a local fast food, not sonic, and I make alot more than min wage. I do on occassion get a tip. Granted not often, when I do it's greatly appreciated. It shows me that my service is appreciated. I too work in the nasty weather. May I suggest to the grumps that I serve daily and you know who you are, that if you don't like it go elsewhere!
