Raymore residents will decide one City Council race Tuesday.

In Ward 2, incumbent Nathan Hughes will face challenger Richard Hopkins for a one-year term. The winner will get his first election victory.

Hughes was appointed to the council last year when a member resigned. Hughes previously had run unsuccessfully for mayor.

Hopkins never has held an elective position, but he has served on the city's Planning and Adjustment Board.

Hughes, 31, says he wants to stay on the council to continue to work for a Raymore community center. The project would include a swimming pool, fitness center and community meeting rooms. The cost, he said, would be about $14 million. Read more

Mr. Hopkins is a retired code enforcement officer from the City of Independence Missouri. There he developed years of experience working as liaison between city government, it's citizens, police and fire department. He has received several neighborhood citizen awards and certificates of training from Mid America Council of Goverments and Independence Police department. He has served on his local HOA, Raymore Architectural Review board, The Raymore Board of Zoning Adjustments, The Mayor's Economic Development Team and is currently the Raymore Lions membership and publicity chairman.

Nathan Hughes wins his first elected office and will continue for one more year as ward 2 councilman in Raymore. What is sad is that only around 10% of the voters in ward 2 cared enough to vote. It appears that most do not vote because they are just too busy. Yet if you ask them they are the first to say voting is important part of being a good citizen and agree it is an important way to voice their opinions on issues that affect their families and communities. This must mean that those who do not turn out to vote believe the vote will not affect their lives. How sad!
