this is a truly appalling story--the police executed an 18 year old deaf and declawed family pet. is there no policy in place--no animal shelter that prevents the officer from taking this poor distressed and lost animal to a field putting two bullets in its head and then throwing it in the trash.

I live in a suburb of kansas city and i will forever remember the raymore police for this attrocity. As an animal lover i will never live in, visit, or shop in raymore.

The City of Raymore Web Site includes the following procedures that do not appear to have been followed.

Police Department Animal Control Duties

The Animal Control Division of the Raymore Police Department consists of one full-time Animal Control Officer (ACO) and one part-time ACO. Duties of the ACOs include: PICK-UP and STORAGE of LOOSE, STRAY, and DANGEROUS animals;
Enforcement of Raymore city ordinances regarding animals;
Maintenance of animals HOUSED at ANIMAL CONTROL FACILITIES;
Investigation of animal bite calls;
Investigation of animal abuse / neglect calls;
Adoption procedures of animals without homes.

It was sad what happen all around. Prayers are with the family who lost a family member. Because beside the anger, I know they are saying WHAT IF???????? Our family is for your lost.

Can you imagine if you had a 19 year old cat, declawed, toothless, deaf, frail, 6 pounds, accidentally stray out of your house and you were looking for it. The police calls and tells you where you can retrieve the cat's mangled body-in a dumpster because they shot it twice in the head. Unreal.

Does this mean cops have the authority to shoot ANY cat or dog that happens to be outside of someone's property??? ENQURING MINDS WANT TO KNOW! What is this??

Well, you say you keep your dog locked up. Better pray it never accidentally wanders out. The cops may shoot your dog and throw it in the dumpster and they give you a call and tell you where to retrieve your mangled dog. I guess you still would say KUDOS! GOOD JOB!!

People of Missouri-please contact your State law representatives and make animal cruelty a felony. Most states it is a felony. Animals feel pain, fear and suffering just like you do-which sufficiently justifies compassion; they are sentient and intelligent. They can't talk so they need YOU to speak for them.

Ok as a police officer let me suggest a realistic solution here. The supervisor who told the officer to shoot the cat needs to be suspended without pay for 15 days, and permanently demoted to patrol officer since he or she is incapable of making rational decisions. The officer who was dumb enough to pull the trigger needs to be charged with animal cruelty & sentenced to 200 hours of community service at Wayside Waifs, terminated from the department, and his or her P.O.S.T certification permanently revoked. The city needs to offer the family a new pet, and provide permanent veternairy care as well as a $50000 settlement for the trauma they have caused this family. Not too harsh, but strict enough to teach police officers to think before they act.

I was shocked by the back woods actions of the Police dept. How could the officer not asess that the 19 yr. old, 6 pound, declawed cat could not be a threat to anyone? I do not understand the rationale behind shooting the cat and why shoot it twice? I am sure one bullet was enough to shatter a 6 pound cat. Those involved should be punished for their barbaric actions. I am thankful I do not reside in Raymore.My heart goes out to the family and I hope you pursue some action towards this hillbilly operation of a police dept.
