I will also add that most of the kids in those AP/honors classes were from very well-off families, many of them had stay-at-home moms and college-educated parents.

This is a bunch of liberal, crybaby, the world ain't fair crapollia. Make them kids do home work. As a matter of fact, pile more on the little tots. If they ain't doing home work they just want to eat, lay around and send test messages to their other chubby little friends. When we were kids and you had home work, you just did it or you got your as# busted. They are going to need all the learning they can get. Have you seen the job market around here. If you have a 4 year college education, you might find a 30k per year job in Parkersburg or Charleston. Thanks to the almost 4 bucks a gallon gas, that takes a big chunk of that check. A smart kid will take the bull by the horns and get good grades, it happens all the time. Besides, if everyone is smart, who are we going to get to pull the wagon load of bookworms when they go to town to get them paychecks? I agree with psycho on this one when he finally post a comment real soon. He did his homework and had time for a rat killing, fixing the hog pen where they rooted out, get water from the creek, shoot a mess of squacks for supper and tote in a pile of firewood. That was all before school in the mornings. Yes sir, discipline is what we need. Fire them little butts up with a good rod and you will see that GPA grow leaps and bounds.

No one's talking about whether or not kids should have to do the schoolwork. The question is whether or not there is a built-in advantage for rich kids. And the "when we were kids" speech is irrelevant. We are trying to do things a little better this time around. When you were a kid, they built coal boilers in buildings, ran chemical waste into waterways and built cars with half the power but burned six times the gas. We can improve schools too.

Judging only from syntax of this comment, it is easy to see how well that system worked for you.

Peeshaw bacon. A third grader could answer that question. Of coarse kids with educated parents with money have an advantage over regular kids. It is true in all kinds of ways. Genetics, stable family life, examples set for them by parents and relatives, better self esteem. Schools will be improved when discipline is improved at home and at the schools. When you can figure out how to hold ALL parents accountable for the raising of their children, you will have the answer. Also, job opportunity for average people makes a big difference. Not everyone is going to be brilliant, however they deserve a living wage the same as talented or college educated folks. Have you ever drove down the road looking at huge houses, driveways filled with cars and wondered how in the world do they pay for all of that when many folk are doing good to make ends meet? Life is not an even playing field and never will be. The best we can hope for in this country is a strong middle class. That should be our goal and that will give back the pride to mothers and fathers and maybe they will appreciate the family unit more than ever. Psycho loves the ArabPrincess and has all of his teeth. Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday bacon. Always good chatting with you.

1) syntax... The study of the rules that govern the ways words combine to form phrases, clauses, and sentences.(2) The arrangement of words in a sentence.
Well I hope I did not piss the Colonel off. It is freaking Topix Colonel. You are lucky I even have the energy to do an occational spell check. When writing on Topix, it is important to keep things short and sweet so people will not try to read into your point and make it out to be something that it is not. For example....Jack has a dog named spot. Spot is a small dog. Spot shi# in the neighbors yard. The neighbor was mad at Spot and Jack. The neighbor flung piles of dog poopy on Jacks porch. Jack got very angry and loaded his 12 guage and visited the neighbor. Now Jack is no longer living in his home. Jack has a new home and does not need to cook any longer. Spot won because he shi# in the neighbors yard today. The End. See, this story tells you many things Colonel. I bet you know what happened to the neighbor, where Jack went and why Spot won't shi# in his own yard. Tell the truth.

1) Reading Comprehension... the level of understanding of a writing.

You may have noticed that my short and sweet comment did not include my opinion as to the quality of your syntax. You have no reason to be angry with me for your apparent lack of confidence in your own writing ability.

Cockypop - your writing is fine. I think the rogue colonel's comment was meant for the comedy. Everyone jacks up some spelling and grammar occasionnally. And I agree with what you've said. The problem is that there will always be parents that don't make enough money or emphasize educational importance. But if small changes can be made - like year round scheduling and homework tutoring programs - shouldn't they be made? Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday as well. Unfortunately my team doesn't play in Super Bowls. Ever. So I'm watching basketball.

... and I realize your only about half-serious. I see one sensible comment between two deliberate works of BS.

You could probably come up with something more entertaining than the pretend Psycho routine though. Most people just skip over his posts.

Agreed... I was just messing with you cocky. The spelling and grammar nit-pickers are usually d'bags.

Colonel...no offence taken. I just enjoy playing with words in different ways. I don't know why. I do the same thing when I get my hands on a CB radio. Many voices and personalities and I sure love making people laugh. Picking on psycho brings me pleasure when I am bored and he dishes it out pretty good as well.
